Long Term Game: Sports Numbers

Greetings Professor Falken. Would you like to play a game?


The rules are simple. We post numbers in sequence, beginning with 1, and a sports-related fact using that number. The first few will be easy, I think, but the farther we get into the game, the more creativity/research we will have to do. I will post the first 3 items so that the idea is clear, but the rest of the posts should only be one number and item.

1 - Number of basketball national championships won by the University of Arkansas.

2 - Number of points awarded for a safety in American Football.

3 - Number of downs alloted to acheive a first down in Canadian Football.

4: average par per hole on a standard 18 hole golf course.






EDIT: can we do more than 1 at a time?

5: The number of players each team may allow on the court in basketball.

6: the number of points awarded for a touchdown in (American) football.

7: the number of crew members allowed over the wall during a NASCAR Nextel Cup pit stop.

I think 1 at a time is better for awhile. Let's see how it goes for awhile.

I've been waiting for someone to drop a thirteen for twenty minute because I've got a 14 to toss out there, but no dice so here's my thirteen:

13 - Number of players allowed on an NBA roster during the playoffs

14 - The WVU-Pitt football rivalry is the 14th oldest in America.

15 - typical number of players in a Rugby union team.

16: the number of games a team plays in the NFL regular season

17. the last age a girl is before turning legal

17: The number of wins Randy Johnson recorded during his first of 4 consecutive Cy Young Award seasons in 1999.

18: Holes on a normal Golf course

19: as in super bowl 19, the only super bowl appearance by hall of fame qb dan marino

20: The Number of years since a player selected in the NBA draft has died before signing a contract with that team (Len Bias, 1986)

21: Dominique Wilkin's jersey number as an Atlanta Hawk

22: As in Super Bowl XXII, where the Redskins scored the most points in one quarter in Super Bowl history: 35.

23: Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls Jersey number

24: The number worn by Willie Mays throughout his career with the New York/San Fran Giants. Now retired by the Giants

25: Barry Bonds' jersey number

26: # of World Series won by the New York Yankees since their first in 1923

(ugh I HATE that one :))

using jersey numbers of players is cheating. this will essentially turn into "who wore [insert random number here]". there is a player for every number, fine. use some real facts. right now my #17 fact is more useful than who wore #23.

27: The number of outs the visiting team has in every 9 inning baseball game (and every home team which is losing in the bottom of the 9th)

28: 2004 Heisman Runner-Up (and 2006 favorite for the award) Adrian Peterson's jersey number with the University of Oklahoma.

29: Number of interceptions Brett Favre threw in 2005.

30: The NBA single game assist record, set by Orlando's Scott Skiles against the Denver Nuggets in 1990.

I hate to say this, but I agree with H.A. Jersey Numbers are WAY too easy.

31. Number of World Series innings pitched by Babe Ruth.

32: The largest deficit ever overcome in an NFL game. The Buffalo Bills overcame a 35-3 Houston Oilers lead in the 1993 playoffs to eventually win 41-38 in overtime.

33: Most times a NL player has stolen home in a career, done by Max Carey.

34: The number of wins USC had in a row before losing the 2006 Rose Bowl to Texas.

35 - Number of games Hornets will play in Oklahoma City next season.

36 -- single season record for most triples, Owen Wilson, Pirates, 1912

37--The percentage drop in television ratings for the 2006 Winter Olympics, as compared to the 2002 Salt Lake games.

38 - Number of points scored by USC in their 2006 Rose Bowl loss to Texas.

39 - single season field goal record (Olindo Mare in 1999, tied by Jeff Wilkins in 2003)

40 - League leading number of home runs hit in both 1985 (Darrell Evans) and 1986 (Jesse Barfield).

I am finding these stats fascinating. This was a great idea MJ4H.

wow, seriously?? i woulda thought it to be Cousy. that's insane, Skiles must've taken like 2 shots that game.

i remember in like the first NBA Jam the Magic had Skiles. i think that was before Shaq, or it might've been right before Penny (making the team Shaq and Skiles). i was like "who the hell is 'Skiles'?". this was before i became a fan of the NBA. prior to that all i knew was Patrick Ewing and like 5 or 6 other guys total (Karl Malone, Stockton, Jordan, Bird, Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas, i think that was about it). i was so oblivious to the NBA back then when i saw Magic baseball hats i was like "why are all these people buying Magic Johnson hats for, and why are the colors blue, silver and black - shouldn't it be purple and gold at least??". that must've been right when Shaq was drafted and before i knew who Shaq was. i thought Shaquille O'Neal was an irish guy, honestly. boy, was i suprised.

i didn't even think the pre-'93 Magic had anyone to get 30 assists off of.

41. The season record for homeruns by a catcher that was set by Todd Huntley of the Mets on September 14, 1996

42: Most consecutive field goals set by Mike Vanderjagt from 2002-04
