Roethlisberger Involved In Motorcycle Accident

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday morning.

The Steelers confirmed the accident for Channel 4 Action News.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said the accident happened on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge.

A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over the handlebars, hit the windshield of another vehicle and then hit the ground.

Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the paper.

Police have closed down the bridge, Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnels.

Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital. There is no word on the extent of his injuries.

Big shit all over the local news right now. Supposedly he was talking after the incident, but a cop said it looked bad.

How much of a difference does a helmet actually make in these type of situations?

LOL. I remember something about him riding a motorcycle without a helmet last year and Bill Cowher warning him. That's what you get, sucka!

I remember reading something about how the Steeler had asked him to stop riding the bike and he refused.

This was back when the "Ben has a huge ego and isn't a team player" stories were going around last year.

Actually, they say early indications are that it isn't life threatening. It's probably too early to say for sure if this just happened..

at first I thought "what an idiot riding without a helmet" then I started thinking more like "what a frigging idiot, riding a bike at all"...

Not that I like the guy all that much, but I hope he's ok.

As with pretty much everything in life, it all depends. A helmet, along with other protective gear, for the mostt part will make a huge difference in the injuries you suffer. I dont know anything about what happened to Big Ben here, but lets say he did go head first through the windshield, a helmet could have been a difference maker between life and death, it wont however, help you avoid neck injuries, at least not in any of my experiences riding.

I honestly dont understand how someone can ride w.o a helmet, doesnt make much sense to me.

Yeah, with the way that motorists can totally ignore bikes on the road, I think that riding one is not a good idea generally.

from that answer, you probably ride a bike, I'm not saying it's not a good idea for you, do what you want. (and if you don't ride, well, change the "you" for whatever name you want ;)) Maybe I'm thinking the same you do, as in you have so little protection on a bike and so much you don't control. In my eye, it's taking unnecessary risk when you're whole career lies on your health...

Ditto. Contrary to urban legends, a helmet can't hurt you. And there will be times when a helmet still won't be enough. But it sure can turn a major head trauma into a minor injury.

I'm all for enjoy life and all that jazz, but personally my life is too valuable to me to take part in high risk activities. And while I'm not a franchise quarterback, I appreciate the committments to my family enough not to risk myself unnecessarily. There are enough bad things that can happen to you on a football field to ruin your career and livelihood, I don't know why you'd compound that by riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

I think this case underscores that any more -- I'd be less worried about what Ben might do on a motorcycle, but more worried about what someone else will do when he's on a motorcycle, as it sounds like is the case here.

And the way that most motorcyclists completely disregard the rules of the road.

He didn't say Ben did. He said most motorcyclists do. That has been my experience as well, whether it be riding between cars when their isn't a lane there, riding on the shoulder, or doing other things that are stupid.

No by constantly speeding excessively. Cutting lanes. Swervying through traffic. Did I meantion speeding?

Don't be sorry, he is an f'n idiot for not wearing a helmet. It's like a seatbelt and my wife not wearing one. "Oh, but my friend survived an accident because she wasn't wearing one." Ah....ok.

I just bought a protective jacket for riding this weekend, sure if I hit someone at 75 mph, I'm probably dead, but it just might save my life too. A helmet should be MANDENTORY in all states. If not, ride at your own risk and sign a waiver.

thing is, that kind of accident could have easily happened with a car cutting another car in a moment of distraction and that would only have resulted in crushed steel and scratched paint.

and we were not there, who's telling us that Ben wasn't speeding to beat the light and came out of nowhere...

I think I have had times when motorcyclists have tried to *beat* me to the left while stopped to make a turn (but then, I'd had a *car* try to do this too).

Generally though, I would say that many drivers are oblivious to bikes on the road (I don't ride one, but about every other male in my and my wife's family has).

i believe he was speaking in generalities, not this specific situation, and I agree with him. Yes, motorists should pay more attention, as bikes are harder to see. But guys who ride between lanes, pop-wheelies, make illegal turns and dart between cars, do not help the situation. in general. :)

There are many cyclists who follow the rules of the road. I have no problem with them.

That said, I'd say the ratio of cars to motorcycles I see on the road I'm sure is greater than 1,000 to 1 -- could be 10,000 to one. I'll bet I could count on one hand the number of times I've seen a car pass on the shoulder of a highway, as an example

But I'd say a half dozen times a year I see a dumbass on a motorcycle pass in between cars driving alongside one another on the highway. There's a stretch of interstate by my house where during the last year I've seen somebody popping wheelies a half dozen times. There are morons in every walk of life, but for some reason motorcyclists account for more than their fair share.

The only reason I've heard that bikers won't wear helmets is that most bikers would rather die without a helmet rather than be paralyzed with a helmet on.

I've always been a supporter of helmet lies, with one caveat -- if you want to do away with helmet laws, we do away with all protections for you. You need to pay a higher insurance rate that covers you not wearing a helmet, and if your insurance doesn't cover you not wearing a helmet then you need to liquidate your assets before you get one dime of Medicaid. I dislike that the rest of us with commonsense are consistently subsizing the galactically stupid.

I don't know, I think the ratio of idiots to vehicles is about the same accross the board. I've seen plenty of fucktards in cars.
