Strange Bug Bite?

So the other day, I notice a bug bite on my leg -- only it looks like a whitehead. The top of the bite is completely white. Strange, but a friend tells me that it was just an ingrown hair, and nothing to worry about.

Today I have 6 of them, in relatively close proximity. They're on my leg near my knee. I'm thinking they are one of a few things --
  • Bug/insect bite.
  • Many ingrown hairs (no, I don't really think this, but hey, you never know)
  • Allergic reaction of some sort.
  • Infection of some sort.
Now, they're on my knee, and that knee is the knee I slide on in softball. There are a few cuts there that have scabbed over, but they are for the most part right below my knee, while these bites/hives are all above my knee. They don't itch much/at all, and they don't hurt either. They just look odd, and I'd like to know what they are and how to get rid of them. Any ideas?

Keep in mind that I have only TV-doctor experience.

Certainly seems like an infection of some sort, to me.

You should squeeze one and see what pops out.

Actually, I'd probably have to see pix to hazard a guess.

You should go see a doctor.

Vince 06-16-2006 11:03 PM

I tried looking up any resource online as well, and I couldn't find anything. Perhaps I will have to go to the doctor.

illinifan999 06-16-2006 11:25 PM

Sweat bumps maybe? I have something that sounds a lot like that and when I spoke to my doctor he said they were probably sweat bumps. Yesterday, I found out my friend had the same thing on his forehead. I've just been putting cortizone cream on it and it seems to be helping them go away (although not very fast).

AZSpeechCoach 06-16-2006 11:31 PM

I get the same thing. They occasionally itch. I've been suspecting little bug bites, but sweat bumps would be a good possibility, given where I am.

If you lived around here, those would be fire ant bites. Always leave a white cap bump when I get bit by one in the yard.

Scrub the hell out of them with soap and hot water. Then clean them out with alcohol and/or hydrogen peroxide.

If that doesn't do the trick, you may have to amputate. Or go see a doctor. If you're on a Kaiser HMO, I'd take the former.

Herpes, plain and simple.

Izulde 06-17-2006 02:20 AM

what exactly are sweat bumps? I've never heard of those before.

WSUCougar 06-17-2006 09:07 AM

I'll go with either chiggers or scabees.

Chiggers was my first thought. Although I would expect them to be itching by now.

stevew 06-17-2006 09:52 AM

Could be some sort of spider bites. That'll make you sleep well at night.

gottimd 06-17-2006 09:53 AM

My friend had something similar a few years ago. He imploded a few weeks after he discovered them.

Buccaneer 06-17-2006 09:57 AM

I had these a few years ago and even a specialist was perplexed. They took a sample and found that it was not a dangerous infection but they best guess (including mine) was spider bites.

Put a plastic owl around your waist.

Desnudo 06-21-2006 01:06 PM

The plague. I'm afraid you're 99% to die.

Why bother with plastic? Put a real owl around your waist.

i was thinking exactly the same thing......without seeing it, it could be dozens of things, but without seeing size and knowing when exactly you got them, its very difficult to speculate

Vince 06-21-2006 02:26 PM

Didn't realize this thread was still capturing people's attention :)

They seemed to go away after a day or so, so I stopped worrying about them. I actually forgot about them to tell the truth -- the evening I posted this thread was the night before my birthday, and I got obnoxiously drunk. I was so hung over the next day, I couldn't think about anything, and on Sunday they were gone. I was surprised the most that they didn't itch or hurt in any way.

Crim 06-21-2006 09:43 PM

Too bad they're gone... i'd like to have heard what happened when you decided to finally dig into em with a toothpick:

Went away, or hatched and burrowed in?
