OT: Nickelback anyone?
Are these guys on top of the world now or what? It seems like they can do no wrong the last few years. Their last 3 albums have produced hit after hit after hit. I was just listening to them and wondered if anyone here likes their music. They have a song on their latest album called Rockstar that you should check out. It's kinda funny. They might just be the best rock band ever to come from Canada, imo. Anyway, here is the chorus of Rockstar. I'm not sure if they plan to release it as a single but if they do it will probably be yet another top 5 single for the band.
'Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap We'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat And we'll hang out in the coolest bars In the VIP with the movie stars Every good gold digger's Gonna wind up there Every Playboy bunny With her bleach blond hair Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar |
#1. Teh suck
#1a. Rush is a better canadian band. So is Neil Young if he'd qualify as a "band". There are many others who do not suck also. |
I believe barenaked ladies to be a more talented band then Nickelback.
|
Nickleback are Creed minus the christian moralising.

Don't forget the Jim Morrisoning. |
Nickelback has one song, they just change their words around each time.
Nickelback seriously epitomizes everything that is wrong with "rock" music today. |

and I believe we are forgetting a little outfit called Rush... FM |
I really liked Leader of Men from their first album. Other than that, they're one of those bands I can listen to on the radio that won't make me turn the station, but I really won't notice the song they are playing either.

Hmm...kinda lilke this:D ?? hxxp://www.riserock.com/xmas/nickelbacksucks.mp3 (Also, this had been posted a while back but it seems pretty relevent here) |
i was going to look for that but didnt' have time ;)...

Better Canadian rock/pop bands/musicians then Nickelback (in no particular order):
The Tragically Hip The Guess Who Barenaked Ladies Niel Young Sum 41 Sloan Bedouin Soundclash Billy Talent Gordon Lightfoot Arcade Fire Finger Eleven (formerly Rainbow Butt Monkeys) Matthew Good (Band) Great Big Sea The Headstones Our Mother Moist Party (Our Lady Peace/I Mother Earth/Moist/Tea Party) The Watchmen Duotang Hawksley Workman Bryan Adams Jeff Healey I'm leaving out Rush because I've never liked the couple songs of their I know, but I'm sure most would argue they are also better. I'm sure I'm also missing some more. Needless to say, Nickelback is far from the best Canadian band ever. |
Dola
Forgot Matthew Sweet |
SLB comes out in both the 4-3 and 3-4.
|
I despise Nickleback, especially when they have a hit song and it's on way too much, on way too many different Sirius channels.
|
I seem to remember enjoying the first Nickelback song I ever heard, but since then they seem more like wuss-rock. Now I always change the channel when they come on.

Damnit...in anticipation of my awesome joke, I actually got it wrong! Oh, well, if that guy can say Nickelback is the best Canadian band ever, I can say the SLB comes out in the nickel defense. |
Add B.T.O and Triumph to the canadian list. Hell, even Loverboy...seriously.
I worked with Nickelback for a day. They were cool guys. I don't like their music but I can appreciate that they figured out how to make it in the music business. |
dola: Rush has sold over 35 million albums. I would venture to say that without them, the rest of the Canadian bands wouldn't have gotten as much of a shot in the states (exposure-wise).
Course, I'm partial ;) |
Quote:
Why, are you Neil Peart? |
Quote:
You could add the song that's being played on the radio right now to this seamlessly... |
Probably not the reaction CenTex was hoping for. I agree with the majority BTW.
|

No, but his screen name might be a clue :) |
same song over and over. but it's true, they don't suck enough that if you're flipping the channels and there's nothing else on and you hear one of their songs you wind up leaving it
|
I do give Nickelback credit for finding a formula for their songwriting that seems to always hit with the mainstream crowd. All of their songs sound the same, but a lot of people eat them up as if they were, you know, actually new/different songs.
But if it was an esay thing to do, everyone would do it. Good for them. But they still suck. ;) |
Well, my wife loves them, so we are going to their concert on the 11th, however I get to enjoy it in style....Box Seats with all I can drink for free....
|
Just to be clear on my opinion - when their first song came out I kind of enjoyed them (although still clearly not the best band from Canada)... but when every song is the same, good god.. EXACTLY the same...

Mainstream rock today reminds me a lot of the mid-80's hair bands. Same song over and over with different words = teh suck. |
I have never heard one note of Nickelback, at least knowingly (it could have been on the background somewhere public and I didn't know it) and I don't know one song they sing. I have heard the name before though.

Not if you don't know anything about Rush... :) |

No, John Rutsey actually. :p |
Good band, capable of being extremely listenable.
But "best ever from Canada" is more than just a tad overboard. Triumph owns that designation, followed by Rush. But they are definitely better than Anne Murray. |

How the HELL?!?! You live in Canada. Your tax dollars have supported them in some regards. :p :D |

Glowing praise there. :) |

 |

Shit, with the taxes we pay my tax dollars have likely supported the Dixie Chicks in some regards. |

funny. |
I like April Wine better than Rush or Triumph (which are close seconds).
|
Bryan Adams is the best thing to come out of Canada
it cuts like a knife but it feels so right |
One word covers Canadian acts:
Snow |
HTF did a thread mentioning Canadian bands get this far without anyone mentioning the Mckenzie Brothers?
|
I used to absolutely hate Nickelback. Now I don't work in a place that plays shitty music on the radio all day, so I don't care about them either way.
They're fine as long as I don't have to hear them would be a better way of saying that I suppose. |
 "ALPHA BAND IS GOOD"
 "NO ITS NOT" "YES IT IS" "NO ITS NOT" :p "BRAVO BAND IS BETTER" "I GUESS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF CHARLIE" "YOU GUYS ARE STUPID IF YOU DONT THINK DELTA IS THE BEST" "ALPHA IS BETTER THAN ALL OF THEM" :p "BRAVO IS BETTER THAN SHITTY ALPHA" "HELLOOOO? CHARLIE!!!" :( "WHAT ABOUT BEN LEWIS?"  :p  "WHAT THE FU--" |

What he said. I know I've heard of Nickleback and I know I've heard Nickleback songs, but I couldn't place one. The only time I ever listen to the radio is in the car and I usually listen to sports talk radio or NPR. The only time I will listen to music if there is a commercial on sports talk radio or they are discussing something of no interest and whatever is on NPR is boring/annoying (which happens quite often). Then, when I do listen to music, I surf around until I find something I know. |

Parody: Just between you and me, baby I know how WRONG you be I like the Wine. Had Nature of the Beast 8-track as a wee person. Crash and Burn was my favorite song. 79-82 were their golden years. Anything else outside of that era is foreign to me. |

Well, just like most (if not all) bands that started in the 70s and have continued on, the best stuff is from the 70s. |

My all-time favourite Canadian artist is Alannah Myles. I'm not sure why she never took off but I think the Germans like her. :)
|
It's too bad this how you remind me i'm a leader of men
|
I never listen to the radio anymore, just my iPod, and can honestly say that I haven't heard a single Nickelback song in years - to my knowledge anyway, unless it happened to be playing in the background somewhere and I didn't notice it. I had no idea they were even still around. Needless to say, it's been a good couple of years.

LOL Yeah, I just got back home and read the replies and I am surprised they don't have more of a following on this board. When you look at how popular they are worldwide you wouldn't think they would be so disliked here. :) Anyway, I don't see the same things others have indicated in this thread. If you listen to their latest album the songs do not all sound the same. The four hit singles are Animals, Photograph, Far Away, and Saving Me. I see very different styles in all of those songs and yet all were smash hits. I will agree that when they broke out and first made it big they had some songs that resembled each other due to their very abrasive and in-your-face-style. I'm talking about How You Remind Me, Too Bad, and Never Again from their 2001 album Silver Side Up. Say what you will about those three songs and how they all sound the same, but all three of them went #1. They followed that album up with The Long Road in 2003. The Long Road was also a fine album that sold around 3m copies. The album showed more creativity and was clearly musical growth and progress for Nickelback. However, the new album All the Right Reasons is by far their most advanced work yet. I think this album was a statement to the music world that there is some substance to this band and they are here to stay - like it or not. The album debuted at #1 on Billboard. Does Nickelback have a style very much their own? Of course they do and their fans would not want it any other way. But to say every song they have sounds exactly alike is less than accurate and I'm guessing those who still say that probably have not given Nickelback's latest CD a fair chance. :) |
