Dakota Fanning's new movie - Child Exploitation?

Fanning's new movie apparently involves several suggestive scenes, including nudity and rape. Many are revolted while others are suggesting it's Oscar worthy. I don't know how I feel about this - uncomfortable to say the least.

The script:

I feel more uncomfortable about the fact that she's been doing movies NON-STOP since she broke in the biz. She's a prime candidate for a total meltdown as a late teen/adult.

She's 12, pretending to be 9. And yup... they involve her.

saldana 08-09-2006 10:06 PM

what kind of context are they in...what is the movie supposed to be about (cant check the links from work)

Joe 08-09-2006 10:10 PM

nothing wrong with that. there are sluts nowadays that are much younger than 12.

sovereignstar 08-09-2006 10:10 PM

Fucking hate it when movies get all realistic and shit.

tanglewood 08-09-2006 10:11 PM

If people want ot make movies about the subject, there's really no way of getting around it.

they never show up at my door. in the past, they tried to "surprise" me while I was making a house call... err... nevermind.

I think the movie Happiness is far more disturbing in its content.

Child rape/molestation has been implied in plenty of movies, like Happiness. But Dakota Fanning will actually be portraying it.

But I think 12 is probably old enough, in terms of concern for the actor or actress herself.

RedKingGold 08-09-2006 11:07 PM

Besides, we'll see her in thirty years in Playboy anyway..

If the actress is fine with it, then there's no problem imo.

caspanky 08-09-2006 11:53 PM

At 12 years old, I think it might be more appropriate to say if she is okay with it, and her parents are okay with it, then there shouldn't be any issue.

Rizon 08-10-2006 12:25 AM

The real issue is her acting talent. Of which she has none.

Vinatieri for Prez 08-10-2006 02:07 AM

What's the big deal? Brooke Shields did this like almost 30 years ago in Pretty Baby. I'm sure the parents and her have made an informed decision here. Again, if you don't like it, don't go to the movie.

Wow, that's uninformed.

Karlifornia 08-10-2006 05:01 AM

There is absolutely no way I will ever see this movie......

Mr. Skin will do that for me and find the good parts.

Young Drachma 08-10-2006 07:56 AM

I think that these kids in hollywood have been exposed to all sorts of this and that....especially when you're talking about someone whose been around for as long as she has doing this.

As for the whole "working non stop thing" what else is she supposed to do? Take her SAG award nomination from the past and a few other minor award wins and go play with her friends from school? Umm..she's been in the business since she was 5 or so, this is what she knows and there is a precedent for people doing it and making it out just fine.

Besides, plenty of kids get messed up on drugs and such alike, without being in Hollywood and making lots of money. Seems like being in a "serious" movie is something that would be a daring and positive move.

I doubt I'll see it tho.

Who cares what Dakota Fanning does?

Your random curmudgeonly one-liner gimmick.

I've overestimated my self importance? Gasp.

Eaglesfan27 08-10-2006 12:01 PM

Even though, I'm sure Dakota Fanning is a very atypical 12 year old having been raised in Hollywood, I don't see how she can make an informed decision without harm possibly being done by the very process of informing her of the details. However, I haven't had a chance to click either of those links to see what details will be portrayed.

As far as her parents, as others have mentioned, I'm already concerned about them with the high volume of movies they have her doing. I'll reserve judgment until I see the details of what she will be doing/exposed to in this movie, but if it is as graphic as what some are implying on here, I think it is tantamount to child abuse.

Also, I'm not naive. Talking to many 12 year olds, in my line of work, I know a surprising number have had some form of sexual activity. However, that doesn't excuse the actions of her parents if they are willingly exposing to her being raped (albeit simulated.)
