invisibility?

Link to story

I know it's an AP story, but the photo looks kind of fake to me.

Marmel 02-07-2003 12:23 PM

sweet!

Bee 02-07-2003 12:24 PM

I guess some of you who voted for invisibility as the Superpower you most wanted may be getting your wish some time in the not too distant future. :D

McSweeny 02-07-2003 01:06 PM

interesting... i wonder if it's legit

Anrhydeddu 02-07-2003 01:20 PM

People that are supposedly walking behind are actually walking in front. It's a clever reflection coat.

NoMyths 02-07-2003 01:23 PM

Nah -- since it involves looking through the "viewfinder," it's probably just a green coat (like a green screen) on which another camera's shot of the background is superimposed.

Qwikshot 02-07-2003 01:24 PM

Criminals and terrorists all over the world rejoice!!!

heybrad 02-07-2003 01:26 PM

What a crock of shit.

sachmo71 02-07-2003 01:26 PM

So it's only an invisibility cloak to people looking through the rangefinder. Wouldn't you get the same effect having someone look through a blindfold?

McSweeny 02-07-2003 01:29 PM

wonder why the AP picked it up if it's just bullshit

GrantDawg 02-07-2003 01:30 PM

Close your eyes. Now the board is invisible!

Good point. The press has never been duped before.

That's what I was wondering. CNN has it too.

It looks like BS to me. Either the writer of the story didn't understand what the "coat" does or the professor is trying to pull a fast one IMO.

heybrad

Did ya'll watch the video of it? It showed people moving behind the coat and then come out from the side. It's pretty damn cool, but it's just an optical trick. You have a wear a special viewfinder or something to be able to see the effect. It's not like someone can put on that magic coat and have no one see them.

heybrad 02-07-2003 01:38 PM

I just wanted to add that Wonder Woman had this technology years ago.

So did Gilligan

heybrad 02-07-2003 01:40 PM

Did Gilligan or was it the Professor?

Wonder if it's harmful to wear?

ctmason 02-07-2003 01:48 PM

The coat doesn't have a damn thing to do with it, it's a series of cameras, from what I gathered.

Kind of an interesting idea.....kind of...

JeeberD 02-07-2003 01:58 PM

Yeah, I phrased that badly. Should have said "a magic coat," not "that magic coat."

Tasan 02-07-2003 02:11 PM

Well, the air force along with Boeing's top secret plane research group have actually been seriously working on 'visibility' stealth for about 10 years now. The new little xplane that was announced a couple of months ago is quite possibly a testbed for it. Boeing claims to be testing the stealth capabilites (which they won't say what exactly they are 'stealth'ing from) during the day. Seeing as NOBODY had seen this plane before the unveiling, and normally regular stealth tech is tested at night so nobody sees, a lot of people are beginning to think that is what they are working on. Don't be too suprised with what you may see (or not _see_) revealed in the next 10 years.

Anrhydeddu 02-07-2003 02:18 PM

I didn't understand the part about looking through a pinhole. But now that you mentioned a rangefinder, the optical illusion makes sense.

thesurreallife 02-07-2003 02:44 PM

more proof of invisibility!!!

Well let me ask this then.

Would rather have the rings or be in the Hall of Fame?

cincyreds 02-07-2003 03:13 PM

Would you rather have the rings or be in the Hall of Fame?

Dola!

JeeberD 02-07-2003 03:15 PM

Dude, I think you're in the wrong thread. Get back here.

BishopMVP 02-07-2003 04:12 PM

Tasan - I also saw something saying that the B-2 Bomber and maybe even the new Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) use anti-gravity due to the ridiculously low thrust to weight ratios. Not sure if I believe it, but it is possible theoretically and I would not be that surprised if it were true.
