Movie nudity

The word "undressed" and USA Up All Night got me thinking. Is movie nudity today as good as it was in cinematic eras past?

I was watching the 1973 movie The Wicker Man and thinking about some 70s and 80s flicks and back then the nudity was great. Sometimes you'd have nudity for no particular reason, many times full frontal or extended nudity more than what seems like the 5 seconds of blur you get today.

Is it me...was I just hornier and paying more attention then or has movie nudity gone downhill?

It was better then. More B movies back then too I think, so you got more nudity. Or I just have no way of seeing present day B movies I guess.

AgustusM 08-28-2006 02:25 PM

movie nudity, playboy/penthouse magazine, etc are all outdated and have very little impact anymore IMO.

now if you want to see nudity you are just a search engine away - when I was a kid we went to see movies like Bollero, just because Bo Derek had her top off for 5 seconds.

You would think the movie industry would step it up then.

Now it's once in a blue moon when there's even an R movie that isn't R for language or violence.

They used to make movies and fill in the time and plot holes with nudity.

What made "Up All Night" partly amusing was how they'd just skip past the nude scenes without even trying to edit around them. I'm pretty sure I'm paraphrasing some standup comedian here, but you'd see a scene with some guys going someplace and they'd say, "Hey, check out this nude beach!" A second later, there'd be a jump cut and the guys would be saying, "Wow, we sure had a lot of fun at that nude beach!"

Anyway, yeah, you know movie nudity is ruined now. Jean-Claude Van Damme doesn't even get naked anymore.

I was just reflecting on this thread and had that very thought about today's movies. The majority is violence which ties into video games and such.

Back in my day all the kids were horny. Now they are pissed off and packing heat.

cuervo72 08-28-2006 02:40 PM

And I'd say definitely downhill, at least mainstream movies. There are a lot of direct-to-video type movies and "shows" (Nitecap, Passion Cove, Hot Line, etc) that fit the bill nicely. But mainstream Hollywood, not so much.

what's partly amusing about skipping over nude scenes?

I mean today would you get a closeup of Molly Ringwald's body double's underwear covered bush?

America today would deny me the tits of the young German girl and the French culture of European Vacation.

Vinatieri for Prez 08-28-2006 03:02 PM

The 70s were definitely a much freer time for nudity in both movies and television. We have definitely gone backwards.

that's true. part of the initial thought was it may be an age thing.

panerd 08-28-2006 03:17 PM

Back then the Skinamax movies had somewhat amusing plots...

H.O.T.S., Candy Stripe Nurses, The Sensous Nurse, etc.

Nowadays all of the Cinamax late night movies are some variation of a married male and female cop taking turns going undercover at a brothel.

panerd 08-28-2006 03:18 PM

I should add that 20 years ago there was far less fake sex and far more full frontal nudity.

Grammaticus 08-28-2006 04:06 PM

Probably a lot less to do with religious people and a lot more to do with cash. Let's face it, there is nothing in place (laws) that stops Hollywood from making movies with more nudity. Also, Hollywood is very anti-religious or anti-Christian. So if it would sell well and piss off Christians, Hollywood would do it in abundance.

What I mean by sell well is sell lots of tickets, i.e. volume. There is a push to make movies that would be best made as R to get a PG-13 rating. They do this so the movie can be marketed to a wider range audience. All of the top sellers are PG-13/PG or G rated. If you tone down the nudity and push the violence to the max you can and still remain PG-13 you can market to the teen dollar and make a whole lot more money on your movie.

"

Not only that, but nudity was more fun and cheerfully gratutitous back in those days.

It seems these days the tendency is to have nudity be purpose-driven and usually tied to a wilted imitation of sex.

Bring back the frivolous nekkidness!

Ummmmm...what movie was that? Purely for scientific purposes, you understand.

BTW, I would be remiss if I let this thread go without a mention of skin actress extraordinaire Nikki Fritz.

Eurotrip was an R rated movie, was it not? Versus a Pg-13 eurpoean vacation... unfair advantage.

I watch myself in a mirror with a cardboard cutout of a tv held in my left hand. I pretend there are child porn freaks that love me. For my uniques pubic shavings.

I got nothing.

No. That would be Naomi Watts. Jennifer was in Mulholland Falls. Geez, get your nudity straight. Although it is clear that if Mulholland is in the title, there is good times ahead.

Hmm, I'm not sure I've seen the Naomi Watts movie. I'll have to check it out. :)

But, I highly recommend anything with Jennifer Connely, naked.

You should check it out. Think naked Naomi and another woman naked and rubbing.

As for Connelly, definitely. I highly recommend Hotspot.

Yeah, guys like David Lynch and Robert Altman (Julianne Moore's bottomless scene in Short Cuts made my day, as did the nude fashion show in Ready to Wear) pretty much do what they want. And whatever the heck Zalman King is up to these days...

No idea the name of the film but somewhere there is a sweet Molly Ringwald topless scene.

Somehow she has big cans in it too.

I think this film is called Malicious. It's a really, really bad movie about Ringwald stalking a college baseball player. The topless scene is the only reason to watch the movie. It's a good reason, though.

cuervo72 08-30-2006 10:05 AM

Yep.

korme 08-31-2006 01:32 AM

On topic here. I bought Almost Famous a year ago, knowing full well I had not seen it but there was a Kate Hudson booby scene. Well, I watched it the night I bought it... and there was no Kate Hudson boobies in my version. What's the delio?

Unsolved Mysteries 101.

Vinatieri for Prez 08-31-2006 01:44 AM

I don't know. They're in there (when she's dancing on the bed), but not for very long, but quite small. Really not much to see.

lol....her boobies are so small shorty missed them

Samdari 08-31-2006 08:48 AM

Its there shorty, but its like one frame, with an open coat, not completely topless. You almost have to go slo mo to see it. Its a great movie, well worth watching, just not worth watching for the nudity.

Vinatieri for Prez 08-31-2006 02:23 PM

Fairuza Balk was much sexier. Something about her . . .

Speaking of gratuitous nudity a la movies of the early '80's, go see "Beerfest" - it's like they'd read this thread and decided to turn back the clock.
