Would It Be Insulting If...
I called a few bunch of elderly women "guys"? We went to the Lyndon B. Johnson Library today and asked for some information; when we got it, I said, "Thanks guys" without realizing what I had said.
I'm so used to calling a group of people (doesn't matter if they're all female or a mix of male/female or all male) "guys" that I didn't even think about it. Growing up in East L.A. that was the norm... wasn't sure if everyone else did the same. |
Don't worry about it man.

did any of them resemble Bea Arthur?

That's not your mother, it's a man, baby!

You're an asshole. That is all.

The elderly should all be beaten anyways, so basically thanks for not beating the elderly and leaving it all up to us. Lazy.

As long as you made sure their diapers were dry, I'm sure they will be okay with it.

Besides you can never really be sure of the gender of Austinites anyway.

Re: Would It Be Insulting If...
My guess would be that there would be some general regionality to whether this was offensive, acceptable, or not even noticed. In my part of the South, I think "Ladies" would have been the standard plural pronoun, I'm not even sure that anything else would have come to mind.
That said, it would probably come down even more specifically as to how concerned with "proper" the recipients of the comment were. And that could range anywhere from "they didn't even notice what you said" to "they're talking about how rude young people are today at their bingo game". In any case, I don't get the impression you're likely to ever run into them again, so I wouldn't invest too much worry in it as any perceived slight was entirely unintended. |
