Chargers to send draft pick to Titans for QB Volek

The San Diego Chargers have agreed to send an undisclosed draft pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for quarterback Billy Volek, ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting.

Volek

ESPN.com's John Clayton reported that the Chargers had offered a sixth-round choice; the Titans were asking for a fifth-rounder in exchange for Volek. The two teams had been discussing a trade for a couple weeks until both agreed to wait until after Sunday's matchup between the teams because the Titans didn't want to move Volek to a team they were playing two weeks into the season.

Conversations resumed Monday with hopes of reaching a quick resolution.

Complicating the negotiations was a no-trade clause in Volek's contract. Though Volek asked to be traded after being demoted to third string, he controls where he would go and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has to be involved in any trade discussion due to the clause.

The Chargers have only two quarterbacks on their roster -- starter Philip Rivers and rookie Charlie Whitehurst. They would like to add an experienced backup and keep three quarterbacks on the roster.

Nine teams have only two quarterbacks on the roster and the Chargers have the least experienced duo in football.

Drew Rosenhaus. How nice. Wonder if he can/will muck this up.

It won't be a Full Rosenhaus until we see Billy Volek holding a press conference in his front yard talking "The Man" keeping him down.

That begs a question -- if Billy Volek held a press conference in his front yard with Drew Rosenhaus, would anybody show up? My guess is only Len Pasquarelli.

How the hell did this guy go from the stop gap starter that supposedly was good enough to push Steve McNair out of the door to third string and getting the boot out of town?

I wondered this, too.

They saw him play?

Me too.

In quite a few fantasy football previews, he was picked as a nice sleeper. And it made sense to me too. Givens, Bennett, three RB that can split the load, Ben Troupe... seemed like at least one good fantasy player would come out of that. Now with Collins and Young, their fantasy offensive players suck.

He got in a fight with Fisher or something.

That has to be it. I mean, there's no way they saw Kerry Collins and decided "Wow, this is definitely our starter."

TroyF 09-19-2006 08:32 PM

From what I understand there was always a divide in the coaching staff about him being the starter. There was a large % of the coaching staff that felt he couldn't cut it.

From the Pro Football Prospectus:

At press time, he is the presumptive starter for the Titans, and this will not end well. In 2004, he started 8 games and had the same DVOA as Joey Harrington. (DVOA is their rating system, which I find pretty strong)

It also talks about how the Titans were considering Collins and stated that he would provide more wins than Volek.

Ouch.

Apparently, what happen was after the 2nd preseason game Chow the OC was throwing Volek under the bus in front of the whole team for about 15 minutes and blaming the guy for all the offenses problems. Volek bit his lip and waited until after the meeting and than had aprivate word with Chow. He gave it right back to Chow and basically told him it was all his fault for the shitty O. Anyways Fisher the coach walking at this point and saw his QB ripping the Oc and sided with.............. the OC. You can see from that point forward Volek was shit in Titans games. He played very little and that is very close to when the Titans went shopping for a another QB Collins. No wonder this team is the worst in the NFL and heading south still.

Disagree with a lot of what you wrote. Fisher is one hell of a coach. It isn't his fault the Titans were destroyed by the cap. You can only let so many bigtime players go before it impacts you. It caught up to the Titans, but I blame very little of it on Fisher.

He'll have a job the second the Titans fire him. I don't expect that to happen though. The Titans will get better as the season progresses. I think their strong finish and the development of Young will save him his job for another year. The Titans are getting out of cap hell and will improve as fast as the development of Young allows them to.

They are headed right back into cap hell, with some of the deals they did this offseason.

Troy I never said it was Fisher's fault ad I agree the cap hel really did this team in. All was saying is that Fisher side with a coach over aplayer and that is understandable. What I don't get is how the GM or owner can let this guy go for basically a 7th rounder since the Chargers will be near the bottom of the draft order since they are agood team. Fisher is a good coach but this team has made som epoor choices e.g choosing Pacman ,CB out of West Virginia with the 5th overall pick last year. The guy is runner-up for the Clarrett award for having more time in a police car than a huddle. he doesn't even have an interception yet in the NFL.

would also love to hear the answer. One wild off-season.

cthomer5000 09-19-2006 10:20 PM

Agreed with Troy about Jeff Fisher. Great coach stuck in a horrible cap situation.

ISiddiqui 09-19-2006 10:48 PM

Really bad move from Tennessee's side of the aisle. Unless Vince Young is far more ready to start than we've been led to believe. Kerry Collins ain't the answer, and hasn't been for anyone for years.

That's just it, Volek isn't either. The Titans made the decision Volek wasn't the guy. (and to be fair, the stats actually show that this is the case, that's pretty damning for Volek actually)

ISiddiqui 09-19-2006 11:34 PM

But at the very least, Volek is better than what Collins has shown. Volek has been in the offense, and is/was probably cheaper than what Collins is. Furthermore, Volek is also a decent choice to resume the backup role once Young is good enough to start (Collins won't be around). I don't think Volek would have complained too much in that situation, but jerking him around like the Titans did would get any backup's ire up.

M GO BLUE!!! 09-19-2006 11:41 PM

Good for the Titans.

I wonder if anybody would still be interested in Cody Carlson...

GreenMonster 09-20-2006 12:25 AM

The Chargers are basically using the free pick they got from the Dolphins to take AJ Feeley off our hands.. The Chargers thought Feeley would make a decent backup till they saw him play and cut him..

Deattribution 09-20-2006 12:45 AM

I'm surprised the Titans didn't try to pull a deal off with Oakland, Volek (maybe a low pick) for Porter.
