Problem with the internets tonight (FTP)?

I can't connect to any ftp sites right now. I've tried three different ones. Anyone else having problems?

Is no one else having this problem? Just try a normal site:

ftp://ftp.sierra.com

Is that connecting for you?

No problems for me at any of a handful. Did your ISP block the FTP port?

Not that I know of. Which port is it?

Ben E Lou 09-20-2006 09:12 PM

To clarify, I had no problems with this just yesterday.

FTP port is 21. That Sierra site worked fine for me as well.

The connection has timed out

The server at ftp.sierra.com is taking too long to respond.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Just a guess...

In Firefox: Tools->Options->General->Connection Settings

Do you have a manual FTP Proxy set? Is it correct?

Ben E Lou 09-21-2006 06:09 AM

OK. I've determined that it has to do with my Windows Firewall. Is there a setting I need to change in it? Somehow, it all of a sudden won't allow me to access FTP sites, apparently. I accessed one just yesterday, though, so that's just plain odd to me.

You could try a different FTP client such as FileZilla. The problem may be related to switching between Passive/Active modes which Firefox doesn't support unless you install the FireFTP extension.

It didn't work with IE, or my FTP client software either, until I disabled the Windows Firewall.

Here's another piece to the puzzle: I'm at the office now, and it is working just fine (at least with IE...I had never tried Firefox before last night) with the firewall enabled. I guess it has something to do with my home ISP. But again, on Tuesday, it worked just fine from home. On Wednesday, it didn't.

It isn't a HUGE deal, because it's not like I use FTP that much, but it will be annoying to have to disable/enable my firewall every time I want to do so. Guess I'll be calling Comcast this evening.

I did have an unusual problem with my cable modem one time, I lost connectivity for a few minutes, and it came back on its own. I had no problems browsing websites, playing online games/poker, but I could not FTP. I have no idea specifically how this was caused, but bouncing the cable modem and then my router fixed the problem.

Maybe something to try(if you haven't already) given that you mentinoed it worked fine tuesday but not wednesday.

Perhaps the tubes have finally gotten full?
