Makers of Guitar Hero bought by MTV for $175 million

Wonder if this means that Guitar Hero 2 will be cancelled and replaced by Pimp My Ride the Video Game, or "Road Rules/Real World Challenge Part 7521"

I thought they got sold to Activision last week? I gather that was a false story?

Activision buys 'Guitar Hero' maker
May 9, 2006 12:34 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES--Activision kicked off E3 by announcing Tuesday that it is buying Red Octane, maker of the huge hit "Guitar Hero."

The game, which tasks players with playing a toy guitar and keeping up with a rapid parade of notes--a la "Karaoke Revolution"--was a big surprise for Red Octane on the PlayStation 2 in 2005.

Now, as it prepares to release "Guitar Hero 2," Red Octane will have the substantial resources of the second-largest video game publisher in the world.

Harmonix is the developer, Red Octane the publisher

Man, that sucks. Harmonix has made some awesome games including one of the karaoke games, Amplitude, Frequency, and Guitar Hero. Now I fear that all their games will be teh suck dood :(

Activision: "We chose...poorly."

Should've been spending that $100 million on Harmonix, not on the game's publisher. Oops.
