I am officially giving up my place as a Spartan fan. I have had my heart broken for the last time. That, combined with the Lions, has taken me to the limit.

As I said in the NCAA thread, I am burning everything, and I will post the pics.

I'm still a Spartan fan, no amount of losing can beat that out of me, but I am definately in a find John L. Smith and bash his head with a cement block one hundred times mood right now. Along with the offensive coordinator who should have mutinied or slit his throat before sticking with that fools idea of a conservative playcalling scheme. That is NOT conservative, that is just plain idiotic. When the enemy knows your play and puts 8 (or probably 11) guys in the box, the play least likely to conserve your lead is the frickin same run you have just done ten times in a row. You gotta loosen that stuff up, throw the damn ball, not in the middle where all the coverage is waiting for your running backs either.

Relax. I love it when people show passion for a sports team. And belive me, I know what you are going through. Hell, WE ALL know what you are going through. We all have a story about a game our favorite team should have had, a collapse, a gut wrenching fiasco.

This one pissed me off to and I don't give a damn about MSU. At the end of the day, you just have to deal with it. It's what being a fan is all about. The ups and the downs.

I went to bed at the start of the 4th...unreal to wake up to this. JL Smith needs to go. As a neutral observer, his teams always have a game like this and the second half of his seasons always destroy the first halves.

That Arkansas game yesterday was brutal if you were an Alabama fan. I wanted to give 'Bama's poor kicker a hug. :)

It was brutal for an AR fan also. The 3 interceptions ... you could just see Mustain go into the locker room with a loss, 3 interception and confidence totally shot. At least he got the last TD and a win.

I agree about the AL kicker. Poor guy, hope he rebounds (and is given a chance to).

All in all, sloppy, sloppy game for both teams.

Schmidty. I guess what I'm saying is AR got blown out and embarassed by USC two years in a row. I think the Spartans did fantastic all things considered.

What are you talking about, Edward? Let's be honest. Michigan State has better players than Notre Dame and should have beaten Notre Dame. Notre Dame is nothing more than an above average football team and is benefiting from being Notre Dame and therefore overrated.

Schmidty has every right to be pissed about that game. It was a joke. All that being said, someday they will come through and it will all be worth it. Take it from a Texas fan.

I remember hearing about some guy who "symbolically" left his Red Sox hat at Yankee stadium after a tough regular season loss, saying he was "all done". The Red Sox, of course, won the world series about 2 months later.

Is this your first year being a sports fan? It must be, if you don't realize your team doesn't win all the time.

I actually had a conversation this morning with another Illinois fan where we discussed what would suck more - rooting for a team that rarely has hope like the Illini or for a team that underachieves regularly like MSU. We both felt that rooting for MSU would suck more because there is not a payoff season where they go 10-2 and exceed expectations. They have been disappointing for what seems like a decade now.

You have got to stay the course. I know what your going through as a Florida State fan who has watch the man who has brought us to greatest slowly turn us into(as if we're not already) the laughing stock of college football. Although it is very hard to watch I still cheer for the guys who are out there for my enjoyment. These times make the good times that much sweeter...

Noop, Larry Coker is doing his best to make sure that FSU does not even become the laughing stock of his state, let alone all of college football.

man, that was brutal!

i watched the cal-asu game and saw some similiarities with the msu-irish game. just like msu cal jumped out to an apparently insurmountable lead. but there were some subtle differences in the teams. cal got a little conservative in the 2nd half but i think they realized as i found out that asu didn't really have the ability to hit hr's. asu is a pretty good team but they are lacking in speed wr's and that may be the weakest part of their team. cal's cb's were really able to keep things in check. asu had to try and get back in the game by running the football- not an effective strategy but that was their best weapon.

in the msu-nd game the same thing happened and i think that msu may be the better overall team. but nd does have a home run passing offense and that means that you must be very careful about getting too conservative when playing them. in addition the real weakspot of nd are their corners and that means that you probably should keep attacking that area.

i think john l. smith is a good coach and i do like him. but there is no question that conservative playcalling turned out to be a major mistake. by the way i thought asu somewhat packed it in while notre dame continued to give a 100% effort. but john l as the head coach has to take responsibility. i recall in 2005 in the ohio state game msu made a critical error just before the half, had a fg blocked for a td and their season went down the tubes. john l went over to the special teams coach and reamed him out terribly on the sidelines for making a critical error but special teams coaches should not be held responsible for strategical coaching errors, that is the domain of the head coach.

all coaches make mistakes but the real good ones are able to regroup their teams and come back determined to do better. this is going to be a real test to see if smith has that ability. if msu goes down the tubes he won't be back.

TroyF pretty much nailed it. We've all had our hearts broken by our favorite teams. Ask any WVU fan about the punt block in 1996 vs. Miami or that buzzer beater last year against Texas in the sweet 16. It's just part of being a sports fan.

Everyone that's a sports fan needs to find that place were the high points are better than the low points are bad. I refuse to have a bad day because my teams suck, but their success sure can make my day better. With so many teams in every league now, and so many colleges at the elite level, most fans won't experience their team winning the whole thing in any given decade, if not longer. That's the way it is.

I am still pissed; however, the more football I watched, the more I realized that I don't give a damn about anyone other than the shitty Spartans and the heart-breaking, ass-licking Lions.

I even tried rooting for the Seahawks today, but I realized that my heart wasn't into it. I did, however, realize that their fans are actually passionate too. I have gained respect for them and the Huskies, but I also realized that I don't give a shit about either team.

I won't burn stuff, but I am still beyond disappointed by the Spartans (and Lions).

Football has never been less fun for me.

I felt the same way you did this weekend. My childhood favorites lost the previous week, then this week they were down big. But they scored 19 straight points and the story ended happy. :)

In all serious you will be fine. As a Raiders, Cubs, and Notre Dame fan I have gone through a share of some tough almost loyalty losing games. The snow bowl, Alou's overreaction, and Boston College. I have kept with all three since I was a child though. Despite no championships, and a bunch of near misses, followed with years of losing.

BTW - Michigan State played a hell of a game. I really thought the season was over for Notre Dame, and that the Charlie Weiss magic was gone. This was Notre Dame's year and it looked pretty bad by the 3rd quarter.
