I hate them. I truly hate them. I'm the type of person who rarley gets upset and such. It would take a hell of a lot to really get me going. DMV workers however, are the most incompetent assholes on the face of the earth. Usually if something goes wrong, I am like whatever, its not the end of the world. These morons screwed up so much shit that I am now going to have to re-arrange my schedule around their pathetic existence and this is what pissed me off to no other today. I caused a huge scene at the place, said things I never thought I would say and if I did say them I would feel sorry about it later, but this time I don't. In all honesty I was so tempted to punch this guy in the face, knowing the consequences of my actions is what prevented me from doing so.

Not really sure where I am going with this, just had to vent and nobody is home so you guys get to hear it. I pretty much wish misery on everyone who works at the DMV, not for their whole life, but at least a solid 2 weeks of pure misery and misfortune, they deserve it.

I used to think the DMV was bad until I had to deal with INS.

I hated the DMV when I lived in the city, now I can get in and out really quick. I tell you, after 9/11 it seemed like you needed a pint of blood, one of your Boy scout merit badges and your first grade teacher to get a new license if you lost it.

there ya go. Had to deal with the INS for work permits and they really make you feel tiny and like a piece of shit...

Two years ago, I had my wallet stolen and lost my expired driver's license in the process. I had been driving off the idea that my military ID "validated" my expired license. This, in fact, is not true...but worked with countless police officers.

Having recently been pulled over without said driver's license, I had the opportunity to hear over the police scanner (as I sat in the back of the car) that Arkansas (the state I had the license in) had no record of me having a license there.

This forced me to go to the local license bureau or whatever it's called to get a manual and get ready for the written test. I drove myself, confident that if I got pulled over for whatever reason that I could get out of it. When I got to the counter and asked for the manual, the lady behind the counter just looked at me first, and then looked at my left hand.

I still had my car keys in my hand. Oops.

I ended up calling the Arkansas DMV after a friend told me he had an expired Texas driver's license replaced while being in Chicago. The lady told me if I could fax them a copy of the ID, I'd be all set.

This ended up working out great for me. As I had been looking into buying a home the year before, I had a paper copy of my expired license. I faxed that over, sent like a 20 dollar check in the mail, and a few weeks later I got a "valid without photo" driver's license.

However, my wife (an insurance agent at All State) tells me that the driver's license number does not register...hey, I got it. That's what counts.

INS certainly has it on dumbass on a power trip mentality and don't give a shit about what in essence is somebodies entire life - although I will also say in fairness I have come across a couple officials who have gone beyond the call and have really been lifesavers.

DMV however, gave me a full paper license because I was British even though I didn't have a full British license and I told the guy three times that I never passed a fricking test. I never used it because I was so sure that it couldn't possibly be legit, but for sheer incompetence I think we have a winner.

Evidently we don't have any lines at the DMV in SC. That's what governor Mark Sanford has been saying in his ads. We also have extremely low unemployment, fully funded education, and a balanced budget. Best state in the nation it seems.

Of course, reality actually refutes all of those claims, but if its in an ad, it must be true.

My experience at the SC DMV


Day 1 - 3 hour wait in line at the DMV

I am switching my license from MN to SC, I've had licenses in 5 other states and never had a problem passing the eye exam before, I fail the eye exam. I'm cross eyed in 1 eye, but my good eye has 20/20 vision. This isn't something that can be corrected by eye glasses. I try to explain this to a fairly uninterested DMV worker, who tells me I need to go to an optometrist and have him fill out a form to that effect.


Day 2 - Trip to optometrist

Have the exam, he comments that I am one of the few he has seen that really couldn't be helped by glasses. Lucky me. I do get a glaucoma check, so it isn't a total wasted trip.


Day 3 - 3 hour wait in line at the DMV

Give them my form from the optometrist and they are happy. I just about get to my car and notice that my brand new SC license says I need to ware glasses for it to be valid! I return to the worker and explain as calmly as I can: I don't ware glasses, I don't need glasses and have a form, signed by an optometrist, to that effect. Apparently during the eye exam my eye sight went from 20/200 uncorrected to 20/190 corrected with glasses. And the SC law is: that if your eye sight will be improved by warring glasses you must. No matter how small the improvement. After arguing for a while the worker suggested I go see the optometrist again. Seeing that she quit listening to me and having pissed off everyone in line behind me, I just left.


Day 4- Return trip to optometrist

I return to the optometrist and explain the situation. He looks at me like am insane and says "your kidding right?" I assure him I am not. So he gets another form and just puts down 20/200 in both spots.


Day 5 - 3 hour wait in line at the DMV

Give them my form from the optometrist and they are happy. I just about get to my car and notice that my brand new SC license doesn't have my motorcycle endorsement. I went back and they gave that to me without any problems.

I realize these people are just doing their (thankless)jobs but it seams to me there is some room for improvement.

Since I am drunk and have nothing better to do right now, I am going to do my best to explain why I hate them so much. I am in MD right now, so it's called the MVA. First they told me, I can't ask them questions at the MVA (after I spent 1/2 hr in line) they said I had to call their #. Second, after I called them and asked them what paper work I needed to register a car I was getting via gift from NY I would need to reigter in MD. They told me what I needed, then I called them back and asked again to make %100 sure thats all I needed. Next, I went to the MVA to do all this after my day was done, it was around 4:20 when I got there and the guy said they were closed, I said "you close at 4:30, it's only 10 til" the guy then tried telling me it was 10 after and i showed him my watch which showed around 4:20. I can understand them their position, trying to get out of their job asap bc thats what i would do, but dont sit there and tell me its 10 after when its only 10 til, that pissed me off. So, i went back the next day, had all the paperowrk they told me on the phone to have, and went to the counter. The lady then told me i needed a bill of sale of 0$ to do a gift exchange, which the lady on the phone said i didnt need. So now I gotta take another weekend off to travel to NY to get a notarized bill of sale (my weekends are precious since I have class, work, physical therpay and an internship to do all week).. Lke I said, im drunk so i dont know where im going with this besides I HATE THE DMV, or MVA, whatever the hell they call it down here in the south.

Having spent enough time in the MVA at Maryland, I don't disagree, but I don't think it's exclusive to DMV's/MVA's/whatever else it's called in the south. I think they all suck.

Not wanting to deal with the "DMV" here in Virginia is a large part of the reason my car is still registered in Maryland (my mom co-owns the car since I needed her help to get the loan, so I can still get away with it, even though I'm a VA resident now).

Why don't you just get Triple A. It much easier to deal with than going to the DMV.

Uh, I'm not sure how it is in CA jb, but you have to go to the DMV for anything license related. The DMV stands for Department of Motor Vehicles.

All Triple A handles all payments, license renewals, etc.

AAA offers roadside assistance, car repair services and other assorted things in Illinois, but they do not help with license renewals. The only way you can renew a license in Illinois is by being a perfect driver and doing the easy renewal, or going to the DMV, you asswhite.

In california, our AAA offers to do license renewals. We can get our car tags, etc from there.

Most AAA places do that nationwide.

Actually, looking at the AAA website for Ca, it said "Drivers license transactions limited to change of address". So, how do you renew your license at a local AAA club?

California rules when it comes to the DMV. All you do is make an appointment and you rarely have to wait more then 10 minutes.

when i was living in Connecticut it was the same way. I just popped into a Triple A place and gave them my expired or expiring license, got my picture taken, gave them 25 bucks and went on my way with my new license 15 minutes later
