NFL Trade Deadline Tuesday
 

I've seen a lot of rumors, but I would imagine it will pass without a deal going down.

And unlike other sports, it kind of sucks that the deadline is relatively early in the season. It might make for a much better stretch run if the deadline was after week 11 or so. Then you'd actually see some of the teams going nowhere able to offload players for a decent return.

Didn't the Rams just trade someone, or trade for someone? I thought I saw the name Hargrove in an article link I didn't click on. It looked new.

ST. LOUIS -- Defensive end Anthony Hargrove, who lost his starting job with the St. Louis Rams after skipping two days of practice and meetings, was traded Monday to the Buffalo Bills for a fifth-round draft choice in 2007.

Hargrove was inactive Sunday, when the Rams lost 30-28 to Seattle, and has played just three games this season. The third-round selection in 2004 out of Georgia Tech played 35 games for St. Louis, starting 19. He has just two tackles, one assist and a half-sack this season.


Last month, he failed to show at Rams Park on consecutive days. Hargrove was fined an undisclosed amount and did not make the trip to Arizona for the Rams' 16-14 victory on Sept. 24. Rookie Victor Adeyanju, a fourth-round pick, took over Hargrove's spot. Hargrove apologized for his absence, but did not say why he took time off without notifying the team.


The Rams (4-2) have a bye week. Coach Scott Linehan was scheduled to discuss the trade during an afternoon news conference.


Hargrove could get immediate playing time in Buffalo. The Bills' pass rush has been ineffective, and the team is thin on the defensive line. Buffalo was down to three defensive tackles after placing rookie first-round pick John McCargo on injured reserve Saturday after he broke his left foot against Chicago on Oct. 8.


Buffalo (2-4) has managed just six sacks the past four games. The Bills also have struggled against the run, allowing 287 yards rushing in the past two games.


Buffalo starts two rookie safeties, and rookie fifth-round defensive tackle Kyle Williams has had significant playing time.


To make room on their roster for Hargrove, the Bills placed linebacker Josh Stamer on injured reserve. Stamer hurt his right knee in Sunday's 20-17 loss at Detroit.

Randy Moss to the Patriots makes a lot of sense to me.

He's doing nothing for the Raiders. Brady/Bilicheck (sp?) could keep him in line, and I think that his presence makes the Patriots the team to beat in the AFC.

Maybe a second round pick for him? One that could turn into a first if certain incentives are met?

The only thing that might hold this up is the fact that the Raiders gave up a first and a player for him not too long ago. They won't want to lose too much value on the exchange, and I can't see the Pats coming close to matching what the Raiders gave.

And Moss to the Patriots would make a ton of sense, if they can get him to restructure his money or agree to an altogether new deal.

Randy Moss' contract is the stat of the week, and the stat of the next 36 hours, with the trading deadline Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET.

First, I don't think he'll be traded. But let's travel down the investigatory road for a few moments. The most sensible thing would be for a team to offer a conditional third-round pick and a contributing player, with an asterisk. The offer could be this: We'll give you a third and a starting player for Moss, but if he's still on our roster on March 1, 2007, the pick will improve from a third- to a first-rounder. This would offer the acquiring team, and the Raiders, some protection. Moss has 2½ years and $25.85 million left on his contract, and even if you traded for him thinking you were going to hang onto him for the rest of his contract, you'd want the option of dumping him right after the season if he turned into a cancer.

For the record, there are 10 teams that have the cap space to add Moss without cutting another player: Arizona, Buffalo, Cleveland, Green Bay, Jacksonville, Kansas City, New Orleans, New England, Philadelphia, San Francisco. But as of Friday, none had shown any interest in doing so.

Moss' 2006 salary is $7.25 million. He's due to make $9.75 million next year and $11.25 million in 2008, the final year of his contract. Let's talk about the money the Raiders would save by trading him, and the cap impact. For the final 11 weeks of the season, Moss will make $4.85 million. If the Raiders trade him, that's a savings in hard dollars between this year and next year of $14.6 million. And if you know the Raiders' fairly tenuous cash situation (they are in the lower quartile of revenue-producing franchises), that is not an insignificant consideration.

Now for the cap ramifications: The Raiders would save $4.85 million on their 2006 salary cap with a trade. If Moss is traded anytime between today and June 1, the charge on the Raiders' 2007 cap would be $4.04 million, which is the remaining pro-rated portion of the bonuses given him on his current contract.

So with the Raiders playing horribly and going nowhere this year, there are many factors that say: trade the man. But understand two other factors. Al Davis does not make a decision as big as this quickly, or readily; remember how his indecision helped kill the chase of Louisville coach Bobby Petrino last offseason. And the Raiders are loath to admit a mistake, which is what they'd be doing by dumping Moss 21 games after trading a high-first-round pick and starting linebacker Napoleon Harris for him.

Good pick up for them. I hate it when that happens.

Bilicheck has built his team on avoiding the Randy Moss type player - I doubt very seriously he will change his entire philosophy. I think the only player he is less likely to trade for is T.O.

Moss should go to Green Bay, the Packers could do some serious damage not having to rely on just Driver. Philly should just suck it up and go for Moss as well, they ain't winning no championships with those WRs. sure, they risk having a repeat of TO again, but i don't think Moss is that much of a cancer in comparison to TO.

The Packers have Greg Jennings (who has put up better numbers than Moss or Driver so far). I'd rather use that money on the secondary than an overrated receiver who's not much of an upgrade over the two guys they have.

I heard on the LA sports radio that New England might offer both their first round picks for Moss.
