Is it okay to leave your cell phone on in a movie theater?

While we're on the topic of cell phones, I thought I'd get this question in.

vex 02-17-2003 12:24 AM

I actually put mine on quiet, where it just beeps once, but I say yes to option #2.

JeeberD 02-17-2003 12:38 AM

I used to bring it in and put it on vibrate, but I refuse to leave the theatre during a movie, so it didn't do me any good. I now just leave it in the car and if anybody needed to get ahold of me, well, that's why god invented voicemail. :)

Iceberg 02-17-2003 12:56 AM

i just turn mine off because i cant imagine anyone calling me with anything so important it couldnt wait 2 hours. However i dont have a problem with #2 if someone really wants to be interupted from their movie watching

astralhaze 02-17-2003 04:52 AM

aw hell no

stkelly52 02-17-2003 05:49 AM

I approve of tar and feathers for those who fail to turn it off.

Blackadar 02-17-2003 06:13 AM

Yes, if it's on vibrate and you leave to talk. Some of us have 3 year olds and babysitters and need to be available.

...same...and some of us have teenagers that call on us in crisis mode. We had an aborted suicide attempt just 2 weeks ago, and my wife being available to this girl was crucial.

wade moore 02-17-2003 06:47 AM

Who the hell voted straight up yes?!

KWhit 02-17-2003 07:53 AM

NO WAY

KWhit 02-17-2003 07:53 AM

Dola - I don't even care if it's on vibrate. Everyone else can still hear it. Turn the damn thing off!

Ksyrup 02-17-2003 08:45 AM

This is a theoretical answer, since my daughter is 3.5 and my wife and I still haven't gone to see a movie since she was born, but if we did and she was with a babysitter...

I would certainly leave it on vibrate. I think it would be irresponsible not to. Cut the parents some slack.

wade moore 02-17-2003 08:49 AM

I agree with KSyrup.. vibrate is fine, generally you can't really hear it, and if you can only the person right next to you can, and they can deal..

What gets me... even more than the ringing.. is I've started having some really bad movie-going experiences which include punk teenagers (ugh.. getting old at 23.. sigh) who answer the damned phone and HAVE A CONVERSATION sitting there right next to you while the movie is going.

sigh.. guess i need to movie to sunday matinees ;)

Marmel 02-17-2003 09:06 AM

How did parents go to the movies 10-15 years ago?

I remember my parents leaving me for the night, with a babysitter, or a grandparent. I know they didn't have a cell phone. :)

Ksyrup 02-17-2003 09:17 AM

You take advantage of whatever technology you have. Since we have the capability, we should use it. If something ever happened and I had my phone off...

Craptacular 02-17-2003 09:23 AM

Off please.

Amen!

RendeR 02-17-2003 10:23 AM

While I do understand the parents view on things. I believe that most phones have the ability to show you the number that is calling you. unless the call is from someone you know to not normally call you without a damned good reason, then you really should sit there and wait until the movie is over.

Most theatres I go to are quite full and if i were to get up in the middle of the movie I'm going to inconvenience and piss off a bunch of people.

I believe in turning off the ringer and if you do get a call, check the number and decide if its really necessary to get up and bother everyone else first. Then at least go outside to respond.

My thoughts exactly.

supatrupa 02-17-2003 10:46 AM

I ran a theatre from 88-95 and I've removed people for far less complaints from other movie goers. So, if you pissed off someone else in the theatre with your stupid cell phone, I'd kick your ass out. That's one thing I loved about that job.

EagleFan 02-18-2003 12:21 AM

I agree with RendeR, put it on vibrate, check the number and call back later. Unless it's an ermergency call, such as who-ever is whatching your kid(s) (assuming they have common sense not to call you for the stupidest little reasons).

I also see thos who voted straight up yes haven;t stood up and said why they feel that way. HM and who else? :D

Easy Mac 02-18-2003 12:46 AM

Is it okay to leave your cell phone on in a movie theater?

Is it ok for me to beat their ass when it goes off and they talk?

Ok then

Fritz 02-18-2003 06:33 AM

this is a moronic poll

sabotai 02-18-2003 11:11 AM

"Is it ok for me to beat their ass when it goes off and they talk?"

If it wasn't, I'm sure everyone would just look the other way. :)

And who are the 3 assmunchers who said yes!?

Kodos 02-18-2003 02:42 PM

Agreed, Render. And the first rule is: No poles may be shoved into inappropriate places!

korme 02-18-2003 03:17 PM

I will perform Chinese nipple torture to the next person that leaves their cell phone on in the movie theater.

primelord 02-18-2003 03:25 PM

I am not sure it matters. I haven't been to a movie in the past year where there weren't a group of jackassess sitting behind us talking all damn movie anyway.

I agree it's ok to leave it on vibrate and leave the theatre if your going to talk.
