TV/DVD issue

Mrs. SpeechCoach and I just bought a new Memorex TV for the bedroom. The S-Video port works great with the DirecTV, and the picture is just fine. When playing a DVD, however, I get a bar, about 2 inches across, that is slightly darker than the rest of the screen and moves from right to left. The DVD player never did this with the other television. Any ideas?

Sounds like Macrovision maybe? Are you running the DVD player straight into the TV, or through the receiver? If it's going through a receiver, it could possibly be triggering some sort of copy protection feature. Otherwise, maybe you need to check and see if the DVD player is trying to display progressive instead of interlaced, perhaps. Otherwise, I dunno.

Straight into the TV. I'm going to try some different cables and try to adjust the DVD output.

Well, I swapped the DVD player to the S-Video and the satellite to Video 1. Satellite is fine, but the DVD player is still showing the occasional distorting line. Not as severe, but still there. My DVD player doesn't seem to have the ability to switch between progressive scan and interlaced, but with a new TV, should that even be an issue?

When did Memorex start making TV's?

Does it have component connections?

AZSpeechCoach 01-07-2007 10:02 PM

No component connections. Memorex makes a few models of TV. They are budget priced, but have decent reviews. The problem doesn't seem to be the TV. Sigh. I really want to watch a movie, but the lines get distracting. Next thing is to try another DVD player.

Well, it appears to be my DVD player. I swapped my current player (Sanyo) for a partially broken one (shows most discs as "bad") and there were no problems. Dammit. Why does changing one electronic component always involve changing out others?

I got a new DVD player, and it is doing the same damn thing...vertical line moving, of course this time it is from left to right...WTF?

I think the lesson learned here = DO NOT BUY MEMOREX TV'S.

Please tell me you are using different AV cables?

If it were to be assumed, I think the lesson learned here would be that if necessary one must conclude = DO NOT BUY MEMOREX TV'S.

wow.

After trying new cables, placing the DVD player in a different place to reduce "interference," and trying a different connection, I took the Memorex TV back to Target and got a Philips TV from Wal-Mart. Problem seems to be solved.
