Received a letter from Sports Illustrated

I just recieved this offer by mail:

28-issue subscription
+
NFL-Team Fleece Jacket
+
3 Additional Months (14-issue) if paid immediately
+
Pro Football Preview Issue
+
College Football Preview Issue
+
Pro Basketball Preview Issue
+
Baseball Preview Issue
+
Swimsuit Issue
+
Sportsman of the Year Issue

Cover Price: 140$
My Rate: 30$

I never subscribed to SI and I wonder if this is a good offer and if you guys think it's worth it. I also want to be sure this is not a trick because I certainly don't want to give up my credit card number so easily.

And also, how would you guys rate the magasines? Are the articles interesting and do they know what they're talking about? And is the ratio of article/publicity good or is it 50 pages of publicities for every page of articles?

I live in a 99% french canadian town north of Quebec City called Chicoutimi where I'm not even sure that it's possible to buy those magasines (except for the swim-suit edition ). I've never read sports illustrated.

ah

for 42 issues, the fap edition, the fleece jacket, the paddle ball and this lamp, I think it's a good deal.

If you're not familiar with SI, I'll point out that the strength of SI is not its day-to-day coverage of teams and leagues so much as the journalistic quality of the longer articles. If you enjoy reading sports biographies or John Feinstein's books, for example, they are similar to the type of sports writing at which SI excels.

DolphinFan1 01-24-2007 11:25 AM

I personally don't like it. I subscribe to Sporting News.

Wow, to each his own. I don't read SI but I found Sporting News to be so bad that I actually canceled a free subscription.

stevew 01-24-2007 11:45 AM

You should watch, cause they will continue to auto-renew you if you don't cancel your subscription.

LOL...same here. I kept getting it delivered to my mailbox at school during my sophomore year. I couldn't wait to throw it on the counter of my floor's bathroom every time it came.

One extra point...the internet has made weekly magazines that cater to day-to-day (or week by week) sports useless. Better off going for the interesting storylines, like SI does.

*major threadjack alert*

You're from Chicoutimi????? Dear God, I never thought somebody up way more North than I was hanging around here. :)

Oh, and for the record, I think Chicoutimi is 101% French Canadian ;)

But even then, SI should be available at most "Dépanneurs" (how we call the 7-11 like stores around here), or at the specialized magazine stores like "Presse de la Cité" although I'm not sure if you have those or not.

I used to subscribe to SI in my younger days.

it's a profit deal!

Crapshoot 01-24-2007 03:06 PM

Sports Illustrated is preachy, mediocre (with a few notable exceptions) writing at its finest - I'd run from it as fast as I could.

WVUFAN 01-24-2007 03:25 PM

Reading will make your head hurt.

I would demand a Steelers Superbowl commemorative magazine holder

Rizon 01-24-2007 04:40 PM

wtf, I pay $85 for a full year.

I don't feel it's worth it, but I keep it around for shitter reading material.

Anthony 01-24-2007 05:44 PM

i, too, use my subscription to SI as "reading room" material. i like the magazine, i don't care for the swimsuit edition much. i also like the season previews for all the sports. being able to have a nice one or two page rundown for each team makes for great reading on the bowl and a great way to get a snapshot of every team for fantasy sports purposes.
