Too many fumbles!

Am I the only one that thinks the game is having WAY too many fumbles? In one of my multiplayer leagues, the game had 8 total fumbles and 3 interceptions. In the same week, another game between 2 other teams had 8 total fumbles, as well. A bit much, huh?

I thought maybe I just had a bunch of players who had bad fumble ratings, but this seems to be a game engine problem, as I have noticed the problem in my single player leagues.

Anyone else think one way or the other?

I think the fumbles could be tweaked down a bit, but most of my games I'm only seeing 2 or 3 fumbles between both teams. However, occasionally it does get out of control.

I've got 90 rated cornerbacks, and none of them has ever had more than 6 picks in a year. Thats a problem too.

Maybe the opposing quarterbacks saw the 90's rated cornerbacks and thought: heck, I may be better of scrambling or doing a screen pass, but no way I'll risk getting intercepted.

MIJB, I'm seeing too many seasons where no one has more than 5 or 6, and almost every year, IRL, a couple CBs have 10+

Let's check the facts of the NFL. Here are the top individual interceptions figures:
2006 - 10, 10, 8, 8
2005 - 10, 10, 9, 8, 8, 7
2004 - 9, 8
2003 - 9, 9, 8, 7, 7, 7
2002 - 8, 8, 7, 7
2001 - 10, 10, 9, 9, 8, 8, 7, 7

I see six 10's in six seasons, zero above 10.

Edit: I listed only those figures above 6

Thats about 30 more 6+s than I've seen in my last 6 years of career.

I had two corners who were 90+/90+s, both with maxed INT, and my safties were in the 60s with max INT, and my opponents averaged 40+ pass attempts per game (my offense was ridiculous) and they had 14 pick's between the 4 of them. Thats absurdly low.

also, is there any way to keep formatting in this forum without manually putting in line breaks and the like?

The league average is roughly 1 interceptions per team per game. Even if your defense would have double the league average (about 1 or 2 teams per season get beyond 1.5 per game, only 1 near 2 per game), you'd be spreading 32 interceptions over your players (2 CBs, 2 S's, 3 or 4 LBs, backup CBs/Ss). LBs usually acount for 1/8th of the interceptions, leaves 24 Ints to devide over your star CBs, safeties and backups (who will likely see more action with 40+ pass attempts).

I'm not denying your stats, maybe you are on to something. How many seasons of data do you have? What are the top interceptions figures of your first/last six seasons?

Synovia 02-01-2007 03:46 PM

MIJB, I'll look when I get home.

This year, Baltimore had 28 picks, chicago had 24, and 5 or 6 teams had between 20 and 24. They all faced between 30 and 36 pass attempts per game.

My team's corners were better than both of those teams corners, and they faced roughly 25% more pass attempts, and could only pick up 9 picks between them? Thats not right. Teams were constantly playing us from behind, and constantly throwing.

I think I defensive end with 3 picks though, and that really shouldnt happen. Maybe thats a sign that I was seeing more screens and passes to backs because of my corners...I'll have to look at the numbers.

Eaglesfan27 02-01-2007 04:34 PM

I've seen league leaders with 9 or 10 interceptions quite a bit in my short FOF dynasty and moreso in my test leagues. I don't think that is a significant problem.

Usually, the guy with a high interception number is a "lower rated" player than the best corner on the team which makes me think that QB's avoiding the best CB may be a factor in the equation.

ShaneTheMaster 02-01-2007 07:25 PM

I dont think there is a problem with the engine as far as interceptions go - I just think the QB pool is not as talented - which I think is fine. But I do think there is a problem with the engine as far as fumbles, and fumble recovery returns.

Synovia 02-01-2007 08:11 PM

Just checked my career through 2020. I checked the top 15 players as far as total INTS went. 1 9 INT season, 3 8 INT seasons, and probably a half dozen 7 INT seasons. Seems low to me.

beargrowlz 02-01-2007 08:42 PM

Just purely anecdotal here, but I have found that when i call my own plays there's way more fumbles than in a game that's simmed. *shrug*

YMMV.

Cringer 02-01-2007 11:49 PM

I do feel fumbles could be turned down a notch or so.

As for INT's, they are perhaps a bit on the low side, but I don't think by much so I wouldn't make a call for it to be cranked up.

In ten years of my SP league...

21 players who have had 7+ INT seasons. Four of those are 9's, and two are 10's. The two 10's are the league record. Going off of the numbers MIJB posted I would go back to what I said before, just a touch below average perhaps.

DolphinFan1 02-02-2007 12:52 AM

I don't feel there is a problem with fumbles or interception. Just fumbles that are returned for TD by the fumbling team. Happens too often.
