Brett Favre coming back?!
A friend of mine told me he heard it on the radio here in Wisconsin, but I can't find it ANYWHERE! I got ESPN on so maybe something will come up...
|
Alright, local news station is announcing it on their ticker thing, some paper in MS announced it. News conference to come.
Hooray! |
I had read a report that he was looking to get Randy Moss to Green Bay. I'm not sure I could take that if it happened.
|
|
The Good:
No more will he/wont he retirement talk for the rest of the off-season. The Bad: Another year of the media fawning over Favre and endless speculation over the course of the year as to whether he'll retire. Oh. And he gets two more chances to beat the Lions for the umpteenth time in his career. |
Aaron Rogers looking bad in offseason?
|
Quote:
I think Aaron needs to go somewhere he will get a chance to compete for the starting job. |
I thought the consensus was that Aaron Rodgers sucks, which is why the Packer fans aren't real upset at the Favre yo-yo the past couple of years...
|
Is this leaked information or a confirmed announcement? Because if it's the latter, I have no earthly idea why he would choose to do this right before the Super Bowl. Well, I actually have an idea why he would do it, and it hjas more to do with his ego and less to do with wanting to knock the Cowboys out of the media spotlight for the next few days...

ever see rodgers play? that's a tough question. first time I ever felt sorry for a team was the packers having to come out and play the second half vs NE last season. never seen a team basically give up at the half. |

I stand by my statement that it's a difficult question. |
I could see Favre coming back if the Pack had a chance to be competitive next season...which they don't.

Stoney Case was in the league for several years... |
I like it.
|
He's just coming back so he can break Blanda's INT record. What a stat-whore.
|
Confirmed.
The best was I was watching NFL Network and they were talking about Ted Thompson's report that Favre was coming back. Favre calls up Mariucci's cell phone(while on the show) and live tells Mooch that he is watching the show and confirmed that he was coming back. That was one of the cooler things I've seen in a while on that network. |
I don't get why a GB fan would be happy about this. With that cap hit you can't start the rebuilding process fully and the talent you have and could build this offseason will at best squeeze you into the playoffs.
|
Quote:
Maybe because Favre was a big reason they won a Super Bowl not that many years ago and they have an emotional attachment to him as a team leader? |
Quote:
I guess because when he's gone he's gone for good and you have zero at the qb position. That would be the GB fan perspective I think. Objectively I may argue that right now that Favre is an average NFL starter and that plugging in some promising youth or cheaper veteran would be a sound long term solution while winning a couple less games. |
Quote:
EF27, Obviously there is that connect but that Cap hit is ridiculous so how well he plays. |
Favre played fairly decently the second half of the season...which in relative terms means better than most NFL QBs. He didn't have much for a receiving corps, but the line started to get the hang of the new blocking scheme. With some good offseason moves, they could be competitive. They probably won't do any better than playing for a playoff spot, but that also is better than a number of NFL teams. Rogers is not good, and he is not the future. Favre needs to stick around until a better future prospect can be found.
|
Favre+Moss=Championship!
NOT! Moss sucks! |
Quote:
If Rodgers is not the future in GB and it seems that there is some consensus amongst Packer Nation that he is not, they need to dump and bring in that future guy to be the backup. What is the point of having him hanging around if he is not going to be your guy? |
I think by not having a worthy young QB on the roster this whole time, they are wasting Favre's mentoring. I'm impartial to the Packers, but I hope he'd come back and help out whatever QB they get to fill his shoes next.
|
Quote:
Favre is in no way a mentor. Doesn't impress me as that type of guy. |
Quote:
No, he pretty much said as much when Rogers came in. Besides, I don't think you'd probably want him to mentor a young QB. Playing by the book has never really been his thing... |
Oh. Nevermind then.
|
Quote:
I think he has said that he has no interest in mentoring a young QB and that they should just watch and learn. I mean this in no way as a defense, but would you really want Favre mentoring anyone? He gets away with stuff on the field that you really wouldn't want to teach anyone. |
Quote:
They may not have found that guy yet. Considering how much playing time Favre misses, they could have me as the backup and be no worse off. |
WoooHooooo!
Favre is coming back! NIIIIIIIIICE! Yes I am very happy, if you couldn't tell. One more year and then the ride ends. |
Quote:
Why would you want a QB to learn to play like Favre? He takes way too many risks and has always gotten away with it because of impressive physical talent. Teaching a QB who isnt an absolute stud to play like that is just going to turn him into Rex Grossman. Favre has been a mediocre QB since about 2002. He's keeping the packers from being able to rebuild. They wont be competitive on an NFL level (everyone is competitive on an NFC North level) until 3 years after hes gone. |
All this thread needs is VPI and Synovia arguing how Mike Vick was god or Turd Ferguson.
|
Quote:
OK cockboy. Apparently all the best quarterbacks play like sissy-boys. They don't run, they don't take chances. You know who that is? Trent "Flipping" Dilfer. Know what he's doing? Mowing my lawn. |
what the hell are you talking about? Thats like 5 totally unrelated threads where you've followed me aroudn and said somethign about Mike Vick? What are you, his ass-baby?
Favre makes a ton of mistakes, because he doesnt play smart. The throws the ball into heavy coverage. It gets him an occasional extra big gain, but more often it ends up as a pick. He's off what, 1 pick, from the all time record? He really couldnt teach a young QB anything unless hes got exactly the same skill set, and even then I dont know if he could teach him anything. Hes not exactly the brightest bulb on the tree. |
Come on guys, this team isn't that terrible. They went 8-8 winning their last 4 games with the youngest roster in football. They're in the NFC in the worst division in football. They have a middle 1st round draft pick and tons of room under the cap. The offensive line came together towards the end of the year as did the defense. Favre needs more playmakers and if he gets them this can be a good team. I think they need to invest their money in WRs to help Driver. When Jennings got hurt and Koren Robinson was suspended they were left with Driver, Ruvell Martin, and even Carlyle Holliday for gods sake. Bubba Franks should be cut and they need to get someone else who is a threat in the redzone. They also need a running back to replace Ahman Green. So if Thompson told Favre they would get him much needed help at the skill positions why wouldnt he think they have a shot next year?
|
They went 8-8 in the worst division in football. That means they'd be 6-10 anywhere else.
Favre isnt who he used to be. They actually had a decent defense this year, and a decent running game. It was the passing game that got them killed consistently. Favre just isnt good enough anymore to make up for all the mistakes he makes. |
Quote:
Actually, its only been two. But thats ok. Quote:
Oooo. I like when you talk rough Quote:
In all seriousness, I think your making generalities. I'm no Favre Fanatic, but I respect his durability and style of play (much like Jim Kelly). Also, you've got to admit that he did pretty well last year with a young and subpar offense surrounding him. Quote:
I could argue that you're not the brightest bulb in the tree. But, then again, that would be mean. ;) (BTW; I'm just busting you about this b/c you're so adament about Mike Vick/Brett Favre that an uninformed outsider who never watched football would think they were child molesters). |
Quote:
Did you watch any Packers games? They were 8th in the league in passing and 23rd in rushing. They were near the bottom in passing yards allowed and total defense until the last 4 weeks brought them up. Favre had a decent year last year and at least 4-5 of his INTS were when the games were already decided. |
Total yards is an awful stat. Check out DVOA on FootballOutsiders. 21 passing, 22 rushing
Total yards tell you what a team does a lot of. Not what a team does well. When a QB throws 50 passes in a game, he loses. When he throws 19, and gets 10y/a, he wins. Quarterbacks who throw for tons of yards tend to do it because theyre losing. |
I don't see why he is coming back. IMO, the only reason he is going to play in 2007 is to break the records of Marino and Elway.
|
Quote:
Did you even read what you quoted? A truly great QB should want to be a mentor, but I really don't think Favre has the proper skill-set or mind-set to teach anyone. He does everything you are not supposed to do and he generally gets away with it. He has been average-to-poor the last few years because he is getting no help from his receivers. Favre needs to realize that his receivers aren't good enough to help him when he takes his chances. |
Quote:
I think that is a large part of it. I also think this previous family health issues sucked the fun out of football (as it should), and now he is having fun again. The guy is a competitor and as long as the Packers will have him, he'll keep coming back. |
Quote:
I am not a big fan of people saying things like this, and this is why... Why is any player on the Raiders coming back next year? They have no chance of winning anything. Why will Lovie Smith or Tony Dungy come back after winning the Superbowl? Why does any player ever, come back after they have already won a Superbowl or had several good years? Simple, they love to play/coach the game and what they get out of playing in the NFL. |
Yeah, I have never understood why people are so in a rush for someone to retire. So he can sit around with us??
|
I smell a 20 TD, 25 INT season.
|
A 4-8 team with a 35 year old QB should have had a 25 year old QB out there taking the knocks. Too bad he hurt his ACL. In the short term, yeah, it shows your guys how to win when you finish 8-8. But Rogers missed some definite experience he should have gotten, and the team might have been better off picking 7th instead of like 17th.

Especially at the rediculous salary they are paying him. His cap hit is like 12-14 million, right? |

I'm not sure a decade qualifies as "not that many years ago", especially in context of an NFL player's career. I guess this just shows we're getting old, too. When I first saw this post, I thought nothing of it. Then I thought, "Wait...I was a freshman in college when he won the Super Bowl". Then I thought, "it's been a decade since I was a freshman in college?". Then I went all :( |
