Random Question of the Day - 2/20/03
What is the most under-rated movie of all time?
I'm going to have to go with "Hamlet" starring Mel Gibson. Seriously. |
The Changeling with George C Scott.
|
Pulp Fiction, since it is not universally recognized as the best ever.
|
Frankenhooker
|
Little Big Man, my favorite
|
Good Will Hunting
|
Rudy, the only movie that can make me cry everytime I watch it.
TLK |
The Natural.
|
Very Bad Things. Okay, I'm joking... but I did like Kobe Tai in the movie. :D
|
Forrest Gump
Ohhh, you said UNDERrated, my bad. |
I think I'm missing something obvious, so for now I'm going to vote for Wild Things
|
Disney's "Alice In Wonderland". Best cartoon EVER!
|
Howard the Duck - and no, I haven't been drinking.
|
Cocktail
|
I think that Mel Gibson's Hamlet and The Changeling are both great choices. But I'll float out another one: Jaws.
Granted, it's well known for its shark and its startling scenes, but I think it's underrated as a great film. The interplay between Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw is simply outstanding. |
One Crazy Summer
"We come from the planet of the toes and we bring you produce!" |
Mel's Hamlet?? Really? Did you guys see Kenneth Branagh's version? It blows away Mel's version, IMO. It is very long and true to the play (the length - 4 hrs - may be a drawback for some, but not for me).
My vote for under-rated movie: Bedazzled. (The one with Liz Hurley and Brendan fraser). Probably my favorite dumb-comedy. Not my fave movie, but extremely under-rated. Oh. And Vanilla Sky. Love this flick. But I may be biased because I just re-watched it last night. |

Jaws? Outstanding movie. But I think it's pretty widely regarded as one of the best suspense movies ever. I wouldn't call that underrated. Well.. I just re-read your post and I guess you mean that some elements are underrated because everyone just focuses on the suspense elements. Hmmmm... Thinking it over.... |
Groundhog Day
|
little big man and howard the duck were both good picks
|
High Fidelity is a classic for me.

Good, at least I am not the only one there. I think Remember the Titans is underrated, it is a great movie with a good story behind it. |
"Miracle Mile" starring Anthony Edwards.
|
Actually, SNATCH
What a classic |
Edit: Changed it all up...
The Truman Show - One of my favorite movies of all time. Other nominations: The Usual Suspects Waterworld (everybody writes it off as horrible just because it was so expensive...it wasn't that bad a movie) Goonies |
How about KIDS and Shakes the clown?
|
To me, the most underrated movies are ones that require you to get the message to truly appreciate the film. I can think of a few off the top of my head.
Fight Club Contact 187 Field of Dreams American Psycho American Beauty (won Oscars but people keep saying its overrated) I thought Training Day was underrated. Two great actors who were recognized but actors can't carry a film by themself. I've never seen a movie capture the ugliness of L.A. quite like that movie and thought some of the production team got the sham. Speaking of Denzell Washington, I think Remember the Titans is underrated. Just like people have mentioned Rudy, maybe critics have a problem giving a movie about sports its proper due. IMO, Steven Spielberg is underrated too believe it or not. I believe he gets snubbed by film snobs because he makes a lot of "popcorn" big budget films but that doesn't mean he's not a genius. |
High Strung
One of the funniest movies ever IMHO. |
Other People's Money....Danny DeVito was Oscar worthy
Others that come to mind: The Freshman Groundhog Day Reservoir Dogs (I'll take this over Pulp Fiction any day) Tombstone Three Amigos! Leap of Faith The Dead Pool |
Glory...didn't even get nominated for best picture but in retrospect, it was much better then some of the other movies nominated that year. My all time favorite movie.

One of my good friends told me I have to see it. The next time I get together with him, that's what we're doing. |

I'd be interested in what you think of the movie. |
Memento

Office Space

Indubitably. |

Young Guns.
I think it's better than Tombstone, but apparantly I'm the only one. |
A League of Their Own
Nobody appreciates women and their athleticism these days. That is a great movie about how women can achieve just as much as men if given the chance. On and off the field. |
