The Oscars Thread

I'm a big movie fan so i'll be watching as much as i can tonight, and i imagine a lot of others will be too.

I've seen all the major nominated films (yes, even The Devil Wears Prada), so here are my thoughts:

should win = my pick
will win = my actual prediction of what the academy will do

Best Picture
should win: The Departed
will win: The Departed

Best Director
should win: Scorcese
will win: Clint Eastwood

Best Original Screenplay
should win: Letters From Iwo Jima
will win: Letters From Iwo Jima

Best Adapted Screenplay
should win: The Departed
will win: The Departed

Best Actor
should win: Forest Whitaker*
will win: Forest Whitaker

* I would pick Leo for The Departed, but he was nominated for the wrong f'ing movie.

Best Actress
should win: Judi Dench
will win: Helen Mirren

Best Supporting Actor
should win: Djimon Honsou
will win: Eddie Murphy

Best Supporting Actress

should win: Cate Blanchett
will win: Jennifer Hudson

Lathum 02-25-2007 07:34 PM

the intro is kind of drawn out

Lathum 02-25-2007 07:34 PM

I have no problem with actually making this night about movies, rather than celebrity masterbation.

Vinatieri for Prez 02-25-2007 07:44 PM

Just enjoying the HD.

cthomer5000 02-25-2007 07:48 PM

Hmm, they historically had opened with one of the supporting actor/tress categories (something the average joe would view as a "real" category)... interesting that they changed that up this time around.

Schmidty 02-25-2007 07:51 PM

I hate opinions.

cthomer5000 02-25-2007 07:52 PM

Glad to see some love for Pan's Labyrinth, since it's likely to get shutdown in all major categories. Very good movie.

Lathum 02-25-2007 07:57 PM

That was friggin awesome!!

MJ4H 02-25-2007 07:58 PM

quit acting like you've seen all these damn movies

;)

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 07:59 PM

Good god, Del Toro has freaking magnifying glasses on his eyes.? Wait, which one did Pan's Labrynth?

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 07:59 PM

I think that guy just said fuck

cthomer5000 02-25-2007 08:12 PM

glad to see she corrected the Penelope Cruz = mexican comment.. i cringed at the time she said it, thinking it was pretty unbelievable they'd make a mistake like that in the opening, and in reference to a major nominee.

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 08:18 PM

i see jessica beal's areolas

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 08:23 PM

that was relatively unexpected. Norbit did Eddie in.

Young Drachma 02-25-2007 08:28 PM

Norbit indeed. Maybe he'll learn from that...but I doubt it.

That might portend an run of awards for 'Little Miss Sunshine'

cthomer5000 02-25-2007 08:34 PM

Eddie's last decade of movies did him in.

I was thinking that. There sure was a lot of love for that movie and Hollywood loves to make itself feel like it's progressive. Though Jennifer Hudson winning for Best Supporting Actress will likely be the most predictable moment of the night.

MJ4H 02-25-2007 08:37 PM

If that Melissa Ethridge song wins best song there will be carnage in my neighborhood.

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 08:37 PM

Did anyone else think that Melissa Etheridge looked like Hillary Clinton... I mean I know they're both lesbians, but she could find a better looking lesbian to look like.

Gore has gotten huge.

And I hope LMS doesn't keep winning awards. Of all the quirky indie movies, it was easily the least intriguing of them.

Yeah, but once Hollywood has a darling, she don't let go.

cthomer5000 02-25-2007 08:43 PM

I think that win more likely represents the "throwing an old actor a bone" syndrome that you see in the Oscars. They love to basically hand out a lifetime achievement award when they get the chance. That's why I think Scorcese actually has a strong chance in Director for a change... though something tells me Departed and Iwo Jima will spilt the 2 big categories.

That would be a shame, although "Little Miss Sunshine" was the best movie I saw last week.

cartman 02-25-2007 08:53 PM

Borat was robbed! It's obvious that these awards are fixed!!!

(I hope your sarcasm meter is working :) )

She was quite amazing in HD. The best so far.

Melissa Etheridge is from my neighborhood (Leavenworth, KS), so I'm pretty sure there'll be the opposite of carnage there if she were to win.

Young Drachma 02-25-2007 09:03 PM

Ok, all of this recognizing the other people in Hollywood is cute. But I don't really care. Let's get down to business and give out the awards that the people at home really care about.

vtbub 02-25-2007 09:04 PM

what longer, oscars or nba playoffs?

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 09:05 PM

Give that man a couch!

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 09:08 PM

Push.

Young Drachma 02-25-2007 09:09 PM

Wow, how much work has this lady had done?

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 09:13 PM

There is something wrong if CoM doesn't win cinematography

Senator 02-25-2007 09:18 PM

Go to bed and see who wins in the morning.

Izulde 02-25-2007 09:21 PM

Is there a place online where they're showing the nominees and winners as they come in?

I really don't want to have to sit through the Oscars program itself

CNN.com seems to be updating the list of winners regularly.

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 09:36 PM

American Idol represent... though Guarini and Clarkson was robbed.

Rizon 02-25-2007 09:38 PM

I'm so out of touch with movies these days, I've never heard of most of these actors/actresses and movies. :(

Izulde 02-25-2007 09:40 PM

I really hope Meryl Streep wins Leading Actress. She freaking made The Devil Wears Prada.

Other than that I'm cheering for Babel to win as many awards as possible and for "Love You I Do" to win Best Original song.

I didn't like the movie overall, but that was definitely a solid song.

As much as I like Marty's movies, this wasn't his best and it wasn't even the best nominated.

Sure you don't have them backwards? Eastwood deserves to win this year, Marty will probably win in a sort of lifetime achievement award. He's been owed an Oscar for 16 years now...

So? Just because she made that movie doesn't mean she was the best actress this year... Dench & Mirren were much better.

This is in your opinion.

I have mine.

Not everyone will agree. :)

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 09:49 PM

bah, that was the worst documentary I saw all year. jesus camp, the heart of the game and so much so fast were far better.

Easy Mac 02-25-2007 09:49 PM

Don't give it to Gore, he'll put it in his lockbox.

Yeah I know :)... I'm just saying that "making a movie" isn't really a reason to name someone best actress.

Joe Canadian 02-25-2007 09:53 PM

Now I wanna watch The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!
