All-time full 22 player NFL line-up, one player per franchise
 

I saw this on another board but it was one player per franchise on defence and one player per franchise on offence, which just made it far too easy obviously. :p

The one player per franchise rule works thusly. You pick a player and name the team your 'version' of the player played for. e.g. If you want Moss when he was in his prime for the Vikings, then you can't have any other Viking players, but if for some reason you wanted him in his current Raider incarnation, you could pick from the Vikings but no other Raiders on your team are allowed. Another example, if you wanted Deion Sanders circa Dallas and Aikman as your QB, you can shift Sanders to his Atlanta days and stil have both. That being said, here's what I came up with relatively quickly, though I am sure that others may present something better.

I'm an Elway guy, personally, but I have a feeling that the first stat you'll get will be something like "Brady 3, Marino 0." Just guessing.

Terry Bradshaw won, like, 12 Super Bowls, but I don't think you'll hear anyone argue he was the greatest QB of all time.

I am assuming you are taking the player in his prime and playing him in a modern day game, with that said Jim Brown at FB might be the worst pick up there.

Also, if you are going to have Barry as the HB you might as well put another reciever out their instead of a FB.

I think the three guys above are easy locks, I'll update with my picks as I make them.

Dick "Night Train" Lane from the Lions. One of the best CBs of all time and holds the NFL record with 14 INTs in a season. I opted to take him rather than Barry Sanders because I can find another stud RB from several teams, CB is tougher to fill.

Art Donovan at DT from the Colts. There aren't that many all-time greats at DT, and many of the other greats at the position may lose spots to other players from those teams. There's not much on the Colts outside of QB and WR who I have other selections for, so Art Donovan goes on the team here. He also adds a lot to the lockerroom keeping this team loose.

Larry Wilson at FS due to his ability to pick off passes and get to the QB.

LT for being LT. Plus, he was able to hook up a brother better than anyone else the night before a game!

Mike Ditka gets the nod from the Bears. He completely revolutionized the TE position, which prior to his emergence was thought of primarily as a blocking position.

With Butkus and Singletary off the board, Jack Lambert is our starter at the MLB position. A fierce defender he was as good in pass coverage as he was against the run. He also looks the part with most of his front teeth missing!

Thoughts: Rarely will I make an all time team of any sort and keep Walter Payton off it.

I was not going to let this thing go until I got Unitas on the team.

Using Shannon Sharpe as a TE allowed me to use Unitas as a QB, which allowed me to use Brown as a FB, which allowed me to use Otto as a C, which allowed me to use Gregg as a T. All of which were upgrades--all in exchange for downgrading only the TE position by losing Mackey.

Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, and Lawrence Taylor were the only 100% players in my head when I sat down to do it. Although some other players (Munoz, Lilly, Deacon Jones) popped into my head pretty quickly once I sat down and thought about it.

I'll give this a try.

Thank God for players changing teams when they got old. It's interesting that all but two guys on offense are AFC and all but two on defense are NFC.

Here is an easy one for you. When you think of one the top LB of all time... I mean why are you leaving the Giants open for anyone else? This should be like one of the first guys check off on everyone's list.

I don't think the Ronnie Lott who played for the Jets belongs on any all-time team. Why not add in the KC Chiefs Montana while you're at it?

Sam Huff at MLB? That would free up the Bears to take Ditka at TE.

It is amazing that three separate greatest EVER* to play their position (Rice, Montana, Lott) were teammates.

*Of course, one can argue about those three being the greatest EVER, but you would not be laughed out of a sports bar for saying that Montana was the greatest QB ever, or that Lott was the greatest safety ever, or that Rice was the greatest WR ever.

Read the first post again. Picking a player when he has moved on to another team at the end of his career means you are picking the type of player he was when he was on that team. So Picking Jerry Rice as a Raiders means you though his old ass was better then his 49er days

This is much tougher than it appears.

People forget that Lott was a damn fine CB too. They moved him to safety when they picked up another all-pro CB, can't remember if it was Williamson or Wright.

I think part of the issue is clarifying the question or I guess it is a matter of subjectivity on each person's part. If you are looking at just regular season stats, I would go with Dan Marino, but if we are looking for all time greatness which has to include post season performance in my opinion, then I would include at least 5 guys ahead of Marino.

Decided to not do the arguably gimmicky Jim Brown at FB, though I think it could work, the Saints this year often used McAllister and Bush on the field at the same time.

And yes the coaching position is soley to placate the disrepected Patriots. Though, if I take out Mitchell from the returner position I could add in Gibbs....

The Steelers give you a lot of options. Webster at center was considered one of the best ever. On defense, you have greene at DT, Lambert at MLB, and Blount and Woodson at CB. With another couple solid years, Faneca could also be on this type of list as well.

The regular season vs playoff performance is an endless arguement. As you state, its a matter of personal preference that will spark discussion every time its brought up.

And don't forget that random Canadians will come along and interject Moon into the conversation as well. Had circumstances been different/better and he been able to start his career in the NFL, Marino might not own any records.

All conjecture of course, but I think Moon is a legitimate name to banter about in any greatest QB conversations.

Jim Brown at FB isn't a gimmick, he's listed in the HoF as a FB, not a HB.

I'm actually surprised that the Cowboys aren't harder to fit into this, but the guys I kept coming back to were all DT guys.
