Ping fellow Atlanta area people

Well, I finally did it. I made the move from New Orleans like so many others. And I did the ultra fashionable thing and moved to Atlanta. Well I am mooching off friends and family here till I can find a job and a permanent place to live, but I couldn't take the low paying, no options of the New Orleans job market anymore.

Any random suggestions of any type for a new Atlanta resident?

And if you see a dorky looking guy with Louisiana plates driving around like he doesn't know where hes going, please forgive him, he probably doesn't know where he is going.

That's ok. You'll fit in with the rest of the drivers here ;).

Be prepared to be tailgated by a pickup truck on 85/75/285 whatever, even if you are going 85 MPH. Also, watch out for SUVs. There are 100000000 of them and nobody can seem to drive them or park them.

That is where my father-in-law relocated after Katrina destroyed his house. A year later, he still doesn't know his way around that well and would fit the description of that last paragraph. ;)

Welcome!

Park your car and ride MARTA if you're inside it's coverage - our traffic sucks, as I'm sure you've already found out.

MARTA's a good way to get around to see a ballgame or go to the airport or go downtown without a lot of hassle, and it's fairly clean compared to most urban mass transit. But it doesn't cover all of Metro Atlanta, for example no coverage out here in Gwinnett. But even if you live in places without any coverage, it's worth driving a bit and then parking in their free lots and taking MARTA downtown.

Anyway, again, welcome!

There is also no way to get to Turner Field directly.

Though, as an everyday MARTA rider, prepare for horrible delays in service frequently. It is worth it over driving in rush hour traffic, but on the weekends, I definately prefer to drive to Midtown (to the Fox) or wherever. Though downtown, I usually suck it up and take MARTA. Best way to get to Braves games and I'd rather not pay to park to go to the Aquarium (I get MARTA for free through my job).

Thats the kind of random advice I was looking for! ;)

Thanks for the advice and welcome, and yea, I already found out the wonders of local traffic. Bumper to bumper traffic not moving on a 285 at NOON?! Insane. Loops are suppose to move relatively well, especially in the middle of the day! I'll probably have to look into public transportation, because I may end up working right near the Olympic park.

The connector (85/75) usually runs better than 285, interestingly enough.

miked 03-19-2007 09:54 PM

Midday on the connector drives me nuts.

BT- Am I missing a way to get to the stadium on MARTA? Like without taking the subway to five points, walking through Underground and taking a shuttle?

Nope, that's the only way I know of how to do it on MARTA. They need to put a shuttle through Underground. I don't want to have to walk through there every time I have to go to a Braves game (then again, I don't go to many).
