Stand-up comedians

My brother used to be a fan of Mitch Hedberg. He died without ever seeing him. So, when John Pinette came to mighty Dayton, Ohio we had to go see him for my brother. Guy was hysterical. I knew he was before that but man, to see him live, was just a riot. Not to mention, compared to many comments, his routine was pretty clean in terms of language, etc. An hour of comedy and maybe 10 cuss words.

Who are some of your favorite stand-ups? My list:

Lewis Black
Dennis Miller
Robin Williams
Nick DiPaolo

Fouts 04-02-2007 08:01 AM

Saw Eddie Izzard live last year. Enjoyed it.

I like alot of comedians. Some of my favorites have been;

Eddie Izzard
Jake Johannsen
Mitch Hedberg
Dennis Miller
Lewis Black
Chris Rock
George Carlin

Recently saw DiPaolo in DC, great act to see live. He does have a podcast for those who didn't know. I stumbled upon Demetri Martin on comedy central and couldn't stop laughing, I'd love to see him live, but isn't he only in NYC?

Mitch Hedberg was great, too bad I never got to see him do a standup performance live. I have also seen Lewis Black a few times live, he is a great comedian to see as well.

I'd love to catch Louis CK live. Some musical comedians to see would be Stephen Lynch or the Flight of the Conchords.

Rizon 04-02-2007 08:19 AM

Carlos Mencia and Joe Rogan!

Pumpy Tudors 04-02-2007 09:01 AM

comedy Kathy Griffin response

Marc Vaughan 04-02-2007 09:06 AM

Emo Phillips rocks imho ...

DolphinFan1 04-02-2007 09:11 AM

I like Tim Hawkins. He is probably unknown to most of you. He is a Christian Comedian. 100% clean. But he is very funny. He does parodies of songs and they are hilarious. If anyone is interested, go to Timhawkins.net. There are free promos on his dvs's and some clips from his cd's.

Oilers9911 04-02-2007 09:56 AM

Lewis Black
Denis Leary
Jeremy Hotz

My most overrated...Dane Cook. Not funny at all to me.

Blade6119 04-02-2007 10:11 AM

Aries Spears
Pablo Francisco
Stephen Lynch
Lewis Black

maybe Nick Swardson

Bee 04-02-2007 10:13 AM

Lewis Black
Ron White

Bearcat729 04-02-2007 10:14 AM

Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, Lewis Black, Chris Rock, Eddie Izzard, George Carlin, Bill Hicks

Mitch Hedberg had his moments as well.

I still wish that I had discovered Hicks before it was too late to ever get a chance to see him live. I have been able to see Izzard,Black, and Hedberg live

Qwikshot 04-02-2007 10:18 AM

Bill Hicks, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Eddie Izzard, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, George Carlin (no order here)

"Feelin Kinda Patton" is by far, one of the best standup CDs recorded.

Maple Leafs 04-02-2007 10:28 AM

George Carlin is probably the best of all time. Chris Rock is the best working today.

Beyond that, if you miss Hedberg you should definitely check out Dmitri Martin. Louis CK is good, as is Dave Attel. Lewis Black is always good. If you want something political, check out Dennis Miller and Bill Maher.

I've liked what little I heard from Jim Gaffigan. David Cross is funny in that "not all that funny but still funny" way. All the Blue Collar guys are good, although Ron White is the only one people will admit to liking for some reason.

Doug5984 04-02-2007 10:29 AM

I saw Mitch Hedberg, Dave Attel, and Lewis Black in New Orleans a couple years ago and that was a great show. Mitch is one of my favorites- I also like Brian Posein (sp?), and I don't know if you can really consider him stand-up since he plays the guitar but Stephen Lynch is funny as hell in a very sick sort of way.

Blade6119 04-02-2007 10:30 AM

Weird to see differering tastes...i cant stand any of the blue collar guys, hedberg, dennis miller or bill maher. Interesting to see who likes what, speaks of their personality to some extent

I saw a Bill Engvall stand up special on Comedy Central a few months ago. He was funny, but it's the only stand up of his that I saw so I can't say I like him or not.

timmynausea 04-02-2007 11:01 AM

David Cross
Zach Galifianakis
Patton Oswalt
Dave Attel
Jim Gaffigan

cthomer5000 04-02-2007 11:02 AM

David Cross is easy #1 for me.

Karlifornia 04-02-2007 03:07 PM

Cross, Silverman, Hedberg, Rock, DiPaolo, CK, Attell...a few others as well.

I was lucky enough to catch Hedberg a few months before he died. Great show.

st.cronin 04-02-2007 03:46 PM

Rosie O'Donell

cartman 04-02-2007 07:45 PM

No love for Steven Wright? I love his stand up routines.

At the other end of the spectrum, I was a huge Sam Kinison fan as well.

Ironhead 04-02-2007 07:56 PM

I have seen a couple of funny comedians come through the comedy clubs in my area. The one that took me most by surprise, and probably the hands down best show I saw was Bobcat Goldwaithe. He was really sharp with his crowd interaction and improv.

Jim Gaffigan was pretty funny. I also saw Charlie Murphy and Ashy Larry. I got to shake Ashy Larrys hand and get a picture with him after the show which was pretty cool.

mckerney 04-02-2007 08:02 PM

Jim Gaffigan
Daniel Tosh
Mike Birbiglia
Lewis Black
Patton Oswalt
Rodney Dangerfield
Brian Regan
David Cross

Most unintentionally funny standup ever, Spencer Rice in the Who's Funnier episode of Kenny vs. Spenny

Jeff Dunham, but I am a suck for a good ventriloquist.

Shit, I forgot about Francisco. Pablo Francisco is fucking awesome. "WHAT-EVERRRRRR!"

DougWyatt 04-03-2007 03:25 AM

Steven Wright, Eddie Murphy (in the day), Bill Cosby, and George Carlin. No doubt are the 4 funniest cats.

Oh, and IMO - Robin Williams is more irritating than funny.

BTW...I'm 23, and wasn't around to see Eddie Murphy during the Raw/Delirious days......I bought Raw, and just rented Delirious...and I can't believe this subersive comic genius is the same guy that did Daddy Day Care (QFT from an Onion article)

Amazing transformation isn't it. I guess he is still funny enough for younguns .. but his Delirious stuff was the funniest stuff I've ever heard (the 1st time I heard it, lol).

Critch 04-03-2007 06:53 AM

Bob Schimmel. Very crude and swears constantly, but that's ok with me.

Maple Leafs 04-03-2007 08:51 AM

The people who are listing Dennis Leary might be interested in some of his earlier work, when he was called Bill Hicks.

st.cronin 04-03-2007 08:55 AM

Delirious was killer.

adubroff 04-03-2007 10:54 AM

Gaffigan and Dmitri Martin are the two most recent facinations for me.

His hamburger bit, can't remember if that was Delirious or Raw was not only funny as hell, but absolutely true.

I like George Lopez, Chris Rock, and Paul Rodriguez, what does that say about me?

Maple Leafs 04-04-2007 08:43 AM

Someone mentioned Doug Stanhope... I was pretty impressed with his CD.

ISiddiqui 04-04-2007 08:50 AM

Jim Gaffigan is current at the top for me. Though I like Jerry Seinfeld, Lewis Black, and Eddie Izzard a lot as well.
