A/V Help: VGA to DVI?
I want to hook up my laptop to my HDTV Monitor/TV.
On the back of my TV is a DVI female port that would accept a cable that looks like this. ![]() And on the laptop is the standard female VGA 15-pin that would accept a cable like this. ![]() The problem is, I can't find a cable that has a DVI connection on one side and a VGA on the other. The closest I find is this... ![]() But on that DVI-A connector, there are two pins right above the large flat pin (on the left hand-side) that the standard DVI female connector on my TV won't accept. So the question is, is there a cable for VGA to DVI and if not, how do I display my laptop with only a VGA connector on my TV with only a DVI connector? Where am I going wrong? Thanks for any help! |
If my understanding is correct, VGA to DVI-D (what you have) cables are rare. However, you can find a converter if you are winning to pay a hefty price for a quality picture:

Holy cow! $280! I'll just buy a new laptop. :)
Thanks for the heads-up, that was exactly the info I was looking for. |
Yeah, your TV has a DVI-Digital plug, that one you found is a DVI-Analog. You'd have to convert the signal to Digital for it to work, which is why you need an expensive cable.

Here is an article from Engadget about it.

Yeah, my laptop is about 5 years old, I need to update it anyway, I'll just make sure the new one has a compatible video adapter on it.
