Summer Movies League Starting ..

I know someone's done this before, but this seems like an interesting idea and would like to know if there's any movie buffs interested in something like this.

Fantasy Moguls is starting up a Summer session, and I've created a FOFC Movies league (a small one) for 10 players that might be interested in joining up. It's free -- the info for how to play is here:

http://www.fantasymoguls.com/content...?documentId=30

If anyone's interested, here's the info to join:

To accept this invitation, go to:

Ok.. are we all just going to take 28 weeks and Spiderman 3?? :p :D

WVUFAN 04-24-2007 05:15 PM

I took 'em because Spidey III is a sure bet -- it's gonna rake in the bucks.

And 28 Weeks Later is a steal for the price. Wait too long, the buzz will push the price up the closer you get to release date.

DeToxRox 04-24-2007 05:29 PM

I didn't take Spidey which may bite me in the ass but we'll see.

CT's Snob Film Factory
FTW Films
Elitist Pictures
Ruddy Rennish Productions
Weedeater Productions
Oliegirl Studios
Typical Hollywood Schtuff

We have two slots open if anyone else wants to give this a shot.

To me, the Simpsons are the most interesting player in this. It has no buzz at all, which would have been unthinkable 5 or 6 years ago. Still, I think there's a possibility that everyone and their mother sees this thing.

WVUFAN 05-01-2007 05:14 PM

Not sold on The Simpsons. I think they waited too long for the movie. Put this thing out 4 or 5 years ago it would have sold much more than now.

FOFC SUMMER LEAGUE OUTLINE
Top 5 Picks
--------------------------------------------------------

This is the list of the movies picked by the 14 Studios in the ongoing Summer Movies Fantasy League, located here. Some real surprises, as many of the Studios in the league were unwilling to bet the bank of a number of "high profile" movies this summer. The film that 12 of the 14 Studios have picked is quite a surprise ...

1. 28 WEEKS LATER - 12 picks (out of 14 Studios)
Only two Studios, Ruddy Rennish Productions and Doodletown Pictures do not have this movie on their list. At an incredible buy-in of 4 bucks, and a low projected box office of just over 26 million, this movie is a steal in many studios minds. Also of importance is the week it's released is strangly enough a lull week, with it's big competitor being the second week release of Spider-Man 3. 28 Weeks Later could well pull in some of the traffic that had seen Spidey on release.

2. HOSTEL 2 - 10 picks (out of 14 Studios)
Another big surprise and in-keeping with a horror theme is the sequel to the well-received film, Hostel, only with the main characters being female in this incarnation. A $5 Buy-in and rough opening night competition from Oceans Thirteen could limit it, but a built-in fanbase might push it over the estimated rake of $44 million.

3. LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD - 7 picks (out of 14 Studios)
Is the $10 buy-in too much, or too little for this film? One would think this will either be a tremendous hit, or a huge loss for any studio willing to take a chance. A fairly low projection of $72 million might be the cause for such popularity, although there is significant fan buzz over the trailer.

4. THE SIMPSONS -- 7 picks (out of 14 Studios)
$6 dollar buy-in is low for this highly anticipated film based on the long-running TV show, but did the studio wait too long to release it? A high projection of over $100 million might be hard for this film to make. A surprising number of studios have faith in the film.

5. OCEANS THIRTEEN -- 6 picks (out of 14 Studios)
$115 projection, and one would think it will have to make it mostly in the first week, with heavy competition coming in Die Hard 4 the following weekend. Add to that, a high buy-in of $18 makes one wonder -- do the studios with stakes in this film put too much credence to star power?

Suspicious in it's absense is big-movie front runners Spider-Man 3 (6 picks), Pirates of the Caribbean 3 (1 pick) and Transformers (2 picks), many of the studios were not willing to devote a large portion of available money to one single film.

Mustang 06-29-2007 04:46 PM

Hopefully I can climb out of last place this weekend as I have the meat of my lineup coming out over the next 3 weeks with Die Hard, Rataouille and Harry Potter...

molson 06-29-2007 05:07 PM

If "Lucky You" had been the international blockbuster that it truly deserved to be, I'd be looking at all you in my rear-view mirror.

lol. 28 Weeks Later and Surf's Up were definite disappointments for me. I dont think im totally out of it yet, but it looks like its going to take too many strong 4th-5th weeks to pull it off.

larrymcg421 06-29-2007 06:17 PM

28 Weeks Later actually returned 7:1 on its price, which is better than Spider-man's current 5.8:1 take.

What's going to kill me is picking Nancy Drew. Not sure what I was thinking there.

I picked Hairspray so.. umm...

WVUFAN 06-29-2007 09:44 PM

I think Transformers is gonna open BIG, but the top seller of the year will be Harry Potter.

I'm stupified why I didn't buy it for my studio.

cthomer5000 07-09-2007 11:18 PM

dont look now but i'm climbing the charts. I predict I finish a pretty close 2nd, but I just cant see getting to #1 at this point, unless License To Wed has some shockingly great staying power

flere-imsaho 07-10-2007 09:18 AM

I am paying the price now for some really bad selection decisions. :)

I think I just got too cute in retrospect by avoiding all the giant movies. I built a nice solid 1-10, but its just not going to be enough to beat the teams with 1-2 superstars on them.

larrymcg421 07-10-2007 02:16 PM

Avoiding Spider-man turned out to be a good move. I should make a good jump in the standings with Die Hard and Transformers. My mistakes have been Nancy Drew and Hostel 2. Knocked Up right now is returning 10:1, the best ratio of all my selections.

larrymcg421 07-15-2007 06:33 PM

It looks like I might win this thing. I'm currently in 4th place and no one in the top three has Transformers.

Hey, I'm out of last....

Not sure if I can catch you but, I could have a respectable top 3 finish.. I should top $700 mill.. I still have the Simpsons and I'm still pulling in some from Harry Potter/Ratat/Die Hard/Hairspray and I think Rescue Dawn is going Nationwide this week.

molson 07-29-2007 06:19 PM

The Simpsons pulled off 12x it's cost in the opening weekend. The only downside is the game ends tomorrow, so that's all it's going to get. Still, that may be the best ratio in the game. It looks like larrymcg421 holds on for the win.

The new season begins August 3rd - I'd be up for it anyone else is.

DeToxRox 07-29-2007 07:18 PM

D'oh!!!

larrymcg421 07-29-2007 10:14 PM

Yay! I'm surprised I won with my awful choices of Nancy Drew and Hostel 2. Here's how my ratios worked out: (not including the most recent weekend):

Live Free or Die Hard - 11.63:1
Knocked Up - 8.39:1
Transformers - 7.96:1
28 Weeks Later - 7.14:1
License to Wed - 6.42:1
Ocean's 13 - 6.36:1
Hostel 2 - 3.52:1
Nancy Drew - 3.52:1

I'm definitely up for a Fall League

timmynausea 07-29-2007 10:28 PM

If you factor in the Box Office Mojo estimate for this weekend, 1408 got to exactly $70 million for a ratio of 35:1. Not bad.

I had one really bad pick in Bug, which managed just a 3.5:1 ratio. (It was a last second replacement because the movie I originally picked got pushed back from a May to a fall release.) Ultimately I lost because Spider-Man 3 got outdone by Transformers. Spidey brought in over $330 million, but it ate over half my budget and the 5.8:1 ratio was my studio's second worst.

flere-imsaho 07-30-2007 09:01 AM

Wow, top half! Don't know how I accomplished that, other than Harry Potter pulling me out of the fire.

This was fun, but I'll let someone else have a shot for the fall league.

That's where I screwed up. I didn't realize the end date was July 30th since the summer movie season always seems to end at labor day.

stevew 07-30-2007 11:21 AM

Any way to get in for season 2?

oliegirl 07-30-2007 11:32 AM

Finished 8 out of 14...respectable. I'd be in for the next round if there is enough interest.

You all underestimated the power of Hairspray. :D

stevew 08-02-2007 11:29 AM

Well, we got 7, still room for a lot more.

Wow, what a spectacular tumble for us in the final weeks.
