Ping: Jon

Did KMPC 1540 go off the deep end, or am I just no longer in their coverage area? Yesterday it was Sporting News radio, today I'm getting music that sounds either French or Southeast Asian.

SirFozzie 05-01-2007 09:50 PM

I think Jon is boxed.

Anyone know why?

DanGarion 05-01-2007 10:23 PM

In 2007, before the station's sale to Radio Korea, there were no local shows on the station. Bob Keisser of the Long Beach Press-Telegram said that KMPC is "on life support." (Page B2, December 29, 2006 issue).

On March 30, 2007, AllAccess.com, an online news service covering the radio and music industries, reported that KMPC had been sold to Radio Korea "for an undisclosed price."

Also their website is down.

Yes, the world wants to know!

Ksyrup 05-01-2007 10:25 PM

He had an inappropriate outburst in the OOTP thread.

Oilers9911 05-01-2007 10:26 PM

It only took 100 inappropriate outbursts to get a boxing.

Dude, no need to kick a person while he's boxed.

From my understanding, he's been on this board, contributing to it longer than you and I combined. I figure he's earned some leeway.

Fair enough man. However he does resort to personal attacks too often.

That's cool. I just know how these sort of threads can turn out.

Korean...does that count as Southeast Asian?

If so, I'm going to take full credit for having at least a halfway-decent ear for languages!

SackAttack 05-01-2007 11:12 PM

Also, the last two radio stations I've listened to at all significantly have switched format to foreign language. KZLA to Latin music and KMPC to Radio Korea.

Bug, are there any stations I should avoid jinxing by listening to them?

JeeberD 05-01-2007 11:12 PM

I remember the morning four years or so ago that I got in my car and the local hard rock station was playing oldies. It was so sad... :(

spleen1015 05-02-2007 07:50 AM

There's nothing worse than getting in your car for the 45 minute commute to work and turning on the radio to find out that the local ESPN affiliate has switched to Fox Sports Radio and Mark Patrick is the new FSR morning host.

Then, at 10, you realize that Kornheiser was on ESPN and now you have to listen to Tony Bruno.

This was a dark day for me 5 or 6 years ago. I am still scarred.

Ksyrup 05-02-2007 07:58 AM

This is why people are turning to satellite radio. You get all of the talk radio shows so you don't have to get stuck with one over the others, and there are enough genre-specific music stations that pretty much anyone can find what they want without much fear of getting in the car one day and hearing salsa instead of 80s new wave.

I had to get my car battery replaced recently, and it occurred to me once I got my car back, that even though I've lived in Lexington for about a year now, I have yet to preset any of my FM stations. That's how little I listen to FM these days. I do have a couple of local AM stations preset, but that's only for football season. If the XM/Sirius merger goes through, hopefully I won't have to worry about that, either.

I got XM only because Kornheiser was coming back to radio on XM about 3-4 years ago. It is the only thing I listen to in the car. I really like the Dibble and Kennedy show on the MLB station.

This is exactly the type of thing that lead me to getting XM. 4 radio stations I listened to regularly changed format within 6 months of each other, and I said "screw it." I haven't looked back, and have no regrets.

True enough...I shouldn't have said anything. My bad.

Kornheiser's show is now available via Podcast for free on iTunes. My 2-hour round-trip commute consists of 1.5 hours of TK and a half-hour of PTI. I've not turned on a radio station in a month.

That is good to know. I haven't listened to him since he went on hiatus because of his MNF obligations. Thanks for letting me know.

Mr. Tony is also available live on washingtonpostradio.com
