Brown loafers

What kind of socks would you wear with brown slip-on leather loafers? I'm going to be wearing them with jeans. Think I can wear them with black dress pants and jacket too?

I'm thinking black socks would work. Brown of course will. But white might not.

Yes I'm asking for fashion advice on FOFC.

If you don't want to even worry about the color, and don't mind giving off a sockless look...I was reading GQ yesterday and they had a little blurb on "loafer socks." They might look kinda feminine but they're socks that just cover your toes, the bottom of the foot, and the low part of your heel. It says they're available on Banana Republic's website, but unfortunately I couldn't find them on there (for you...added because I'm not really a loafer guy :)).

Lathum 05-29-2007 08:53 PM

argyle?

Logan 05-29-2007 08:55 PM

Oh...and pass on brown shoes with black pants. That's really the only color they won't work with.

I concur.
White socks will be ok but you'll look totally 80's.
Navy blue will work.
Brown will work.
Black is out. OUT OUT OUT. :)

Other than your date, nobody actually cares or even notices what kind of socks you're wearing, or if they match your pants. It doesn't matter.

Buccaneer 05-29-2007 09:01 PM

Loafers? Socks?? Good god, no wonder you Canucks are strange.

Tell that to this older guy I work with who wears white socks with all his suits and doesn't have a clue why no one respects him.

Lathum 05-29-2007 09:05 PM

White socks with suits?

I didn't think anyone could be -that- fashion clueless!

bbor 05-29-2007 09:15 PM

Black n brown = bad idea.

Never underestimate the power of the clueless my friend!

lcjjdnh 05-29-2007 10:45 PM

No socks are more than approriate in this situation.

Karlifornia 05-29-2007 10:47 PM

How about just some classy-looking stirrups?

Vinatieri for Prez 05-29-2007 11:11 PM

I don't wear pants, so I can't help you that much with the matching stuff.

DeToxRox 05-30-2007 12:26 AM

I'd say just use the standard sandals with sock look.

Desnudo 05-30-2007 02:57 AM

No socks, blue pinstriped seersucker suit with Panama hat and ivory cane.

So you don't respect him for this reason?

A blatant lack of professionalism? Yes.

Noop 05-30-2007 09:32 AM

If he is wearing pants how do you see his socks? And why are you looking at another mans leg... ;)

Logan 05-30-2007 10:35 AM

When men walk in loose fitting dress pants, socks are always going to be visible unless the ends of the legs are wrapped around the shoe.

By the title I had deduced in my head that this thread would be about some new sexual term.

Thats not why I showed up here though. Now I look like the ass who decided to write the first poop joke.

Red socks, assless chaps. Forget the jeans.

I'm just amazed that you would think less of a human being because they choose to break the unwritten code of business attire.

When you are part of a team that spends 7 weeks working hard to figure out why a major financial institution is getting killed in its commercial lending function, and the team develops a laundry list of recommendations and necessary fixes for the bank to implement, only to have your "leader" dictate all of this to the CEO while having his fat foot on his knee and his bright white sock showing, leading to the CEO chuckling at first sight of this and then dismissing everything he said because he can't take him seriously...yes, you can lose respect for a person.

People in business don't wear suits or business-casual dress so that we all look the same...it's so they give off a clean, professional look. It takes a lot of effort to look unorganized when you're wearing a suit or a tucked-in dress shirt and dark slacks. I'm sorry, but wearing white athletic socks with a dark suit and black shoes isn't professional.

I see a massive difference between viewing something as "unprofressional" and "losing all respect for a guy."

Logan 05-30-2007 03:40 PM

When that unprofessionalism leads to my efforts, and my co-workers' efforts, being laughed at, I'm not going to respect the person. Sorry. It's such a simple standard that not conforming to it shows you're not respecting the people you work with and the company you represent.

MikeVic 05-30-2007 08:11 PM

Thanks for all the responses.

I'll take a look around for the "loafer socks," but will probably invest in some navy blue and brown socks.

I actually have started looking for a navy blue suit with brown pinstripes. I saw a blazer with that look and liked it a lot, but ended up passing on it. Now I'm looking for one again.

Maybe you should give him a sock party...
