Fun things to Fry
 

Ok guys.. this is an interesting one..

For the past several years the husbands of some of the women that my fiance works with have had everyone (inlcuding the ladies) get together and have a "big Fry"..

Essentially everyone brings snacks/desserts to throw in a big deep fryer.. they just try crazy things, some of it works, some of it doesn't.. I think some of the bigger hits have been Moon Pies, Snickers, and I'm not sure what else (those are the ones I always hear about)..

So, we got the big invite this year and I'm stoked for a good fat-laden day...

But I want to bring something creative, but good that they haven't done before..

So, has anyone done this before? If so - any suggestions?

Fried coca-cola was a big hit the Texas State Fair. I've also heard of fried cheesecake. Fried ice cream is always a good treat.

If you aren't stuck to desserts, I've heard that fried pizza is outstanding.

maybe a PING: RyanS is in order, since the Scots seem to be on the cutting edge of deep fried foods.

Oreos, Twinkies, just about any type of candy bar, pop tarts. Heard fried jerky might be decent.

Just a guess, but I think deep fried chocolate covered strawberries would be yummy.

How do you fry coca-cola?

I don't think there's a lot of restrictions here ;)... the instructions were "snack/dessert".. pizza could easily be made into a snack if cut properly.

Pop Tarts.. I like the sound of that...


I was thinking about this combined with JPhillips suggestion - chocolate covered banana.


I like the way you think. I think the basic theory behind this is everything tastes good fried.

Why stop there? Why not deep fry a Krispy Kreme burger? ;)

What I'm thinking about is I'm hoping stuff from my garden is going well.. I could grab strawberries, zucchini, squash.. hell, maybe cherry tomatoes to go along with a junk food choice or two ;)

I feel unhealthier after just reading that recipe.

I had some at the Fair last year...freakin' amazing!

Fried Oreos also rock. The filling kinda melts and makes the cookies soft and moist. SO GOOD!

I always liked to make Ice Cream Chimichangas when i worked at a tex mex joint. Put a scoop of ice cream into a flour tortilla, and then add whatever else you like in there...maybe chocolate or caramel or fruit. Then roll into a chimi. Freeze for a bit to keep it together. And then fry until the shell gets kind of crispy.

This is my favourite fried snack (not that i invented it, it's a popular "tapa" here in Spain). Dates filled with almonds and wrapped in bacon.

Dates with Bacon Recipe
Dates with Bacon is one of the most delicious Spanish tapas. Serve this tapa and you will receive only compliments. Almonds, dates, and bacon, a fantastic culinary combination.

Ingredients
18 dates, pitted
9 slices of bacon, cut into halves crosswise
1 small bag of sliced almonds
Olive Oil, for frying
18 toothpicks

This recipe serves 9 people
(2 per person).
Fill the pit hole of each date with almond slices (usually 2-3 slices per date). Wrap a half strip of bacon tightly around the width of each date. Secure the bacon with a toothpick, making sure the toothpick passes completely through the date. You should see both ends of the toothpick, to ensure easy handling later on.
Heat olive oil in a skillet or deep fryer until hot. Use enough oil to immerse the dates. For a deep fryer, follow the instructions on the fryer to determine if additional oil is needed. Place the wrapped dates in the skillet or fryer, taking care not to burn yourself with popping oil. Fry until bacon is golden (usually 3 minutes) and flip dates to brown on the other side. Once brown on both sides, remove wrapped dates and place on paper towels to drain. Serve hot or cold on your favorite tapas dish. Serves 9 people.

I hate fried food. Except for french fries.

You can buy deep fried Mars Bars in some fish and chip shops in Northern England if thats any indication ....

(I'd go for battered fish myself, no its not unusual - but I'm really really missing decent fish and chips .... ;) )

I moved here a few months ago (my wife is from Florida and its my 'turn' to live abroad) - I'm still working at SI no change there, just have a remote office now.

I'd drop a French guy in the fryer, and after all the yelling and screaming subsides ... deadpan, "well dang, it works for McDonalds". Slays 'em every time.

Why would you want to change something that is already perfect!?

Yeah, I don't like Oreos - but fried Oreos are beyond magnificent.

It's really good with banana, then roll it in cinnamon and sugar when it's done. Fantastic, I think it's called a Xango or something like that, you can get it at mexican restaurants.

Also banana with pb and chocolate is really good. I make them with wonton wrapper, put down a little big of peanut butter, then a slice of banana, top with some dark chocolate, seal and voila, deep fried goodness.

Man I'm really hocking the banana's, you'd think I worked for chiquita.

I recently had them at a fair and I though they were horrible. The filling was non exestent and the cookies were rock hard.

I once knew a guy that dropped something in a fryer vat and, as a reflex action, went after it. Instant shock..

So, I would suggest not frying your arm.

really? I went back to CMU for our carnival and sampled them - they were soft and moist, and oh so good. Its a once a year thing for me. :D

Fried cheesecake is really good. Well, the kind where they cut it up in cubes and batter it is, the kind thats in like a wrapped pie sucks.

Yours must not have been fresh, or overcooked, or something...

Make a Mac and Cheese casserole, so that it's nice and chessy and firm, and then fry it.

It's heavenly.

Being a vegetarian I have never had this but I hear it's good. Take a piece of bread, put a slice of ham and a slice of cheese on it. Roll it up and put a toothpick in it so it doesn't unroll. Then batter and fry it.

Yeah, basically a monte christo sandwich. Those are dynamo.

All great suggestions, I think I definitely will grab a thing of Oreos and some of the other ideas I'll pick from...

This is tomorrow.. we've decided to take:

1. Zucchini from our Garden
2. Make what is normally our fresh crab cake recipe and make crab balls
3. Fried Coca-Cola
