So, my friend can't decide what to paint her new laptop...
She's got it narrowed down to 3 choices and can't decide between those 3, so she begged me to set up a poll on one of the forums I hang out on.
I figured FOFC would be the most receptive to this (and have the most fun with it :D), so here goes: Choice #1 ![]() This is the one I personally like the best, but it's also the one she had the least to say about other than she thought it was pretty. Choice #2 ![]() This is, according to her, her "favorite piece of artwork by one of my friends". This is also the first one she mentioned and the one that she's leaning towards. I told her she should go with her first hunch, but she still begged me to make a poll. Choice #3 ![]() She's a Taoist so has obvious affinity with the yin-yang symbol. She also asked for people to recommend other art that would be really cool. I personally advise against this, as it would lead to yet more indecision on her part. Note: The outcome of this poll will not affect me personally. I'm not dating her, I'm not getting it on with her and I have no intention of doing either, so do genuinely vote for what you think is best. Poll forthcoming. |
Think you could get away with "don't bother, the lead in the paint would make it too heavy to carry around"? ;)

People paint laptops?

I like #2 the most.

I would go with #1, but have it inscribed with her name. That way you can kill two unnecessary birds with one stone.
|
I'm assuming she's done this before and knows what she's doing? Because I'd be cautious getting any sort of solvents around an LCD screen.

I'm going to suggest that she paint a panoramic view of one of her close friends on it, with some kickass star wars posters in the background.

#1 and #2 are about equal to me. #3 is a very, very distant 3rd.
|
I think #1 is the nicest looking, but #2 and #3 actually have meaning to her. Between those two, I like #2 better... so I voted for that one.
|
I like #1 the best, but, WTF, people paint laptops?

+5 I heard of wraps similar to the ones for ipods, just not painting them. is there some special paint needed for this or just the any Home Depot kind will do? |
Can you use a roller? Will interior latex work? Do you need the blue tape?

+6 I want to see some examples. |
Apparently I am not the only non-cool old guy here at FOFC ;)
For the record, I would think #1 would look better as a paint scheme on something the size of a laptop. |
Is it bad that I read the thread title and new it was Izulde before even looking? :)
and put me in the camp of having no idea you could paint a laptop. |
+7!

Uhh and yeah, I didn't know about painting a laptop either..

Lathum is +9
I am +10. |

Maybe even suggest painting some sort of decal/shell rather than the laptop itself? Not sure how long she plans on keeping this laptop for, but given the normal lifespans of computers for the group I hang out with, it seems like a lot of work not to be able to transfer over.
|
I put vinyl siding on my laptop.
|
I saw a lot of this at law school, and considered it a "hippie deal" (the art was typically radical political statements). I also don't understand how I can spill less than an onze of water on my laptop and it destroyes everything, where other people can coat the entire thing paint and nothing bad happens.

How is it done? With real paint? So do you keep it when it dies, because you're tied to the paint job? Does it peel? It'd be hard to take that to work, I imagine.

She's not blonde is she? Instead of painting her laptop, tell her there are these things called 'wallpaper' that she could use.

my brother bought a laptop several years ago, it was an old clunker (even at the time). I think he paid about $400.
Anyways, he decided to paint it silver. He used a brush. It did not go well. The thing still worked, but damn, it was not pretty. I don't think he ever really liked that laptop much after that. |

I use crayons. I'm not high-tech enough to know I could've painted it.

This is what she should do:

+1 on this one. +whatever on what everyone is saying. Plus, I definitely would not recommend it. I would imagine the heat, as well as ambient light and environment, would cause some problems with the paint on the laptop, causing fading, chipping, toxic fumes and stuff. |
FWIW, I've definitely heard of painting desktops - airbrushing to be more specific. When I was in college I almost had it done, but never heard of laptops - doesn't seem like too big of a stretch though. In fact, the desktops I saw had the mouse, keyboard, everything done to match.
So, maybe I'm + 1/2? so, +17 1/2 |
Sellout.

I'll pile on - it's in my nature. +18.5
