2nd Time in 4 Years - Laid off.

Just got the call from corporate.

Anyone looking for a pre-sales engineer in the mid-atlantic region?

EagleFan 07-18-2007 02:48 PM

Sorry to hear that. I hope you find something soon.

This was a much more depressing thread than what it looked like from the main forum link for me as the word off was not viewable on that screen.

It's almost equally depressing either way.

Fidatelo 07-18-2007 03:08 PM

Dola, sorry to hear about the bad news CraigSca, hope you land on your feet with something better than what you had.

What type of engineer? If you can write code, probably. If you mean mechanical engineering or something else, then no I can't help (unless you can fix our HVAC, then they might bring you on board :D )

Oilers9911 07-18-2007 03:28 PM

Sorry to hear that Craig. Though I can see the parody thread already.....

2nd time in 4 years - Laid.

MikeVic 07-18-2007 03:28 PM

Good luck in job hunting!

CraigSca 07-18-2007 03:32 PM

Pre-sales engineer - let's see - it's a little different than being an actual engineer. We provide technical help to the sales team - the sales guy does the selling while a pre-sales engineer speaks to the specific product and does the presentations, configurations, etc.

I've worked with WANs, disk mirroring, optical networks and most recently (at least until an hour and a half ago) encryption appliances for storage area networks. Ugh, my WOOF team is the Encryptors. Time for a name change, I suppose.

As far as code is concerned - I've written mostly in VB and Powerbasic, though I do know some C as well (but mostly use PB for ease of use).

I get along well with others and enjoy pizza and people-watching. (my last attempt at humor until a new job surfaces)

Yeah. When I wrote the title I wasn't specifically thinking about the parody repercussions.

MalcPow 07-18-2007 03:34 PM

Sorry man, hang in there :(

CraigSca 07-18-2007 03:40 PM

Thanks guys. As evidenced by other threads that are of a greater importance than mine (hey, it's only a job, right?), just hearing the good thoughts from others means a lot.

Take care...

Yellow5 07-18-2007 03:42 PM

Sorry to hear. I am facing my first layoff this year. We get 60-day warnings the middle of next month, then end the job in October. It sucks.

We are losing all of our IT people to a contractor (CSC), and our company is begging those IT folks to go work for the contractor. We "cost too much" now. :(

terpkristin 07-18-2007 03:46 PM

Sorry to hear about that, Craig. Based on your description, I may know some people in your field, I'll ask around. Good luck.

/tk

Understandable, just trying to give you a chuckle.

Arles 07-18-2007 03:58 PM

I'll echo the good luck sentiments. If you don't mind the 100+ degree heat, there are some opportunities out west I could send your name to. Let me know.

Cringer 07-18-2007 04:38 PM

Sucks man, got my taste of it earlier this year. Although i knew i could fall back on trucking. Despite that i would say i didn't really move on and get out of my funk until a month or so ago. Good luck man.

Emiliano 07-18-2007 04:41 PM

Sorry to hear that, Craig. I'm sure you'll find something good soon.

JediKooter 07-18-2007 04:44 PM

That blows. I hope it all works out for you and hope something pops up soon for you. I know you specified the Mid-Atlantic region, but, is relocation an option for you?

I wish all the best for you man.

CraigSca 07-18-2007 04:51 PM

Relocation? Heck, providing for the family comes first. I'd commute and/or move all over.

I actually commuted to Boston from Delaware before - you do what you have to do, right?

Eaglesfan27 07-18-2007 05:02 PM

Craig,

I hope you find something soon and that it ends up being an even better job.

Fidatelo 07-18-2007 05:03 PM

I got laid off last fall, but was lucky enough to be hitting the market at a time when my skillsets are needed. If the same thing had happened in 2002 I might have been in much rougher shape.

The thing is, even knowing there was demand, it was still a nerve wracking time. So I can definitely empathize with you on this one. Best of luck.

CraigSca 07-18-2007 05:05 PM

Perhaps a dynasty (and hopefully a short one) is in the making here :D

wade moore 07-18-2007 05:09 PM

Craig - I hope you find something.. I'll look at my companies website, they do a TON of intelligence work so there could be something there...

Flasch186 07-18-2007 05:24 PM

sorry man...good luck.

If I can get that Training gig I could hire ya!!

JeeberD 07-18-2007 05:34 PM

Damn, that sucks. Sorry, Craig. Best of luck with the search!

MizzouRah 07-18-2007 05:41 PM

Best of luck Craig, I'm sure you'll find something soon!

hoosierdude 07-18-2007 05:52 PM

Best of luck and a quick turnaround for you. You have our thoughts and prayers.

Alan T 07-18-2007 06:03 PM

Sorry to hear the bad news Craig. Best of luck with finding something new!

Alan T 07-18-2007 06:12 PM

Craig, my company has a Sr. Consultant, Technical sales position open it appears in both Princeton, NJ and Herndon, VA. Both are a good bit aways though, and I know very little about the position. If you have interest, drop me a PM. I can get you the details and such at least.

flere-imsaho 07-18-2007 06:58 PM

Sucks to hear this, Craig. Best of luck finding something else.

No, I totaly understand. I'm up in San Jose and my family is still in San Diego, granted it is not a 'commute' as I only get to go back home about once a month.

I'm not trying to be lame here, but, here's a link to Apple's job search thingee (http://jobs.apple.com/index.ajs?BID=...archInterface), you can search it by state, though not all states are there.

They do have jobs in Virginia, Philly, and DC which seem to be the closet places to where you are in Delaware, but, I'm not sure if they are something you would be interested in applying for.

Good luck, I hope something comes along real soon.

M GO BLUE!!! 07-18-2007 07:04 PM

Hope this cheers you up a little...

The boss had to fire somebody, and he narrowed it down to one of two people, Debra or Jack. It was an impossible decision because they were both super workers. Rather than flip a coin, he decided he would fire the first one who used the water cooler the next morning.

Debra came in the next morning with a horrible hangover after partying all night. She went to the cooler to take an aspirin. The boss approached her and said: "Debra, I've never done this before but I have to lay you or Jack off."

"Could you just jack off?" she says. "I feel like sh*t."

CraigSca 07-19-2007 12:15 PM

From the irony department - I was just "re-hired" until the end of the week because the company made a committment to a customer and has no one available to perform the work.

So, for the next two days, I'm employed. Think I'll go buy a boat or something.

Sorry man. Hopefully something will come for you sooner than later.

Call in sick. :D

CraigSca 07-19-2007 06:18 PM

You know, the first impulse is to say, "stick it" - but the extra money will definitely help and I got a really glowing email from HR about my "professionalism".

The letter will give me a tremendous amount of warm fuzzies when my house goes into foreclosure.

Being a former SE, I know how rough of a market it can be, I will hit my feelers out there. And if you haven't tried it yet, Linked In is a great way to make some contacts, it's in my signature...

Lorena 07-19-2007 08:19 PM

Sorry to hear that Craig, wish you luck.

CraigSca 08-08-2007 08:53 AM

Hey, here's a kicker. Just recieved notice from the company that I owe them $$$ because they overpaid my commission in Q1 and Q2.

Sure, let's see, I have tons of money laying around!

Uh...any lawyers in the house?
