I've Never Been More Wrong About Anything...

...than I was about Croc shoes.

My mother came back from Hawaii a few years ago and gave me a pair of the ugliest shoes/sandals I've ever seen. She swore it would be the next big fashion trend. I told her they were the ugliest shoes I've ever owned, thanks.

I went so far as to tell her I'd give her $1 for every person I saw wearing a pair of Crocs. That lasted about a month.

If that had continued, I figure I'd be out thousands of dollars now, with no exaggeration. My mom still takes a huge amount of pride in sending me pictures in magazines of celebrities wearing the shoes.

The latest? President Bush.

I just got back from a trip to the Middle East, they are even huge there. A trip to the ER last year revealed nurses wear them on their shifts because they are so comfortable. They are freakin EVERYWHERE.

I can't think of anything I've ever been more wrong about. Ever.

You guys ever just totally blow a call like this?

rkmsuf 07-24-2007 01:39 PM

I loaded up on Betamax equipment.

MikeVic 07-24-2007 01:40 PM

I hate these ugly ass shoes.

johnnyshaka 07-24-2007 01:41 PM

The internet...is that thing still around?

my mother in law just got a pair of Patriots crocs. the demand was so crazy for them, it's taken her months to get them.

I still think they are ugly. My wife loves them. I will admit they are great for my kids - they can put them on quickly and easily; great for getting them out of the house in a timely manner.

There are a lot of gay men that work where I do. I see lots of men wearing crocs.

I'm sure there's no correlation.

You mean that there is no correlation between you being around lots of gay men or that there is no correlation between gay men and crocs?

Ksyrup 07-24-2007 01:52 PM

Our kids each got a pair, but not the real ones, some off-brand. Blisters abound. I'm still recovering from my jorts debacle, so I'll be steering clear of these for a few years until I hear Subby is wearing them.

Man wearing crocs = George Michael

I thought it would be this:

I bought a pair last summer when my previous "summer-clunker-shoes" disentegrated, and I couldn't find anything else that fit the bill. Black ones, though - nothing fruity.

Anyway, while undeniably ugly, they're great. Comfy, resilient, practical, and you can clean them with a hose! I don't tend to wear them "out" or anything, but for walking to Ultimate Frisbee, gardening, walking the dog, etc... type stuff, they're pretty much perfect.

I can also totally see why nurses & cooks are all wearing them - pretty slip-resistent and definitely comfy when you have to stand for a while.

you are checking out shoes and you have the audacity to call other people gay?

DanGarion 07-24-2007 01:56 PM

Fortunately my wife has taste and would never purchase nor purposely wear those hideous things.

And to DD, they could just as easily slip on some slip on shoes, or velco ones. You don't have to give in to the fad. :)

cartman 07-24-2007 01:56 PM

Here is another gem.

stevew 07-24-2007 01:57 PM

I think they look pretty darn stylish when worn with jean shorts.

I can't speak for Mr. Mrs. Draft Dodger, but I don't even notice IF people are wearing something on their feet, much less WHAT they're wearing on their feet.

and that, my friends, was how Andy Dufresne was able to escape from Shawshank prision.

spleen1015 07-24-2007 02:02 PM

Okay. Well, I must be weird then.

MikeVic 07-24-2007 02:06 PM

I notice certain shoes/sandles/etc. too. They don't register unless they're particularly ugly, or if I like them.

I'm half-expecting MizzouBBallFan to source this as proof of the PS3's superiority in one of the Console threads.

SI

terpkristin 07-25-2007 07:00 AM

Well, you were right that they're uber-ugly! ;)

Actually, we can't wear them here if we're going down to the cleanrooms, as they apparently can hold contaminants that we're not allowed to have in our 100k and 10k cleanrooms. Thus, most people don't wear them.

I remember telling everybody who would listen that the movie Forrest Gump would flop.
