Is the PS3 region-free for DVDs?

I know Icy mentioned it's region-free for games, but I'm wondering if it is for DVDs too.

Because there's a bunch of DVDs I want to get that aren't Region 1 and it just occurred to me as I was looking at the DoA: Dead or Alive Unrated Asian version that the PS3 might qualify.

Nope. Region-locked for DVDs, Blu-ray and PS/PS2 games.

Region-free for PS3 games.

That's not accurate. Blu-ray movies can be region-free or locked. Sony has not mandated that the movie distributors have to lock it or have to be region-free. Here's a recent example where a small distributor has made their first three movies region-free.....

Generally, I think that most of the major releases are region locked, but stating that all Blu-ray movies are locked is not correct at all.

That would make the bluray player built into the PS3 worthless to me, as around 50% of my DVDs are from the US, and I would expect roughly the same percentage with bluray/hd dvd.

Yeah, I imagine that has to be frustrating to many European users who thought movies wouldn't be region locked (yes, I know not all are, but apparently most are) since games aren't region locked.

And precisely what has that to do with the PS3?

If the *film* has been made region-free, how does that change the fundamental region-lockedness of the PS3? Is the PS3 going to play those region 2 Blu-ray Disc films magically because a small distributor has chosen to release a couple region 0 films?

Or am I somehow inaccurate there?
