PING: DirectTV owners

Hey folks. I have Direct TV this year and am looking to find a really cheap way to get the NFL package. Anyone have any good plans/ways/methods of getting a discount off the $250 a season price?

Eaglesfan27 07-25-2007 09:01 AM

I don't, but I learned this year that simply asking for Superfan to be thrown in free will usually get that done.

Cringer 07-25-2007 09:04 AM

They spread the cost over the 4 months of the season. The last two months don't pay the bill. Directv gets canceled right at the end of the season, and you switch back to cable. That is the best i have.

I'm looking to do the same thing, I Know 2 years ago when I signed up for direct tv they had a great offer of, sign up and get a free HD DVR (or something like that)...and I'd love to be able to find something like that this year, since I passed the last time

That I didn't want to pay ANOTHER $300 (after already sinking in $700 over 4 years) to get the HD they promised me 4 years ago when I first spent $400 on my DirecTV HD upgrade? All the while watching my SD picture quality degrade ridiculously?

It's not that TWC here is any better than they used to be (they aren't), it's that DirecTV is a whole lot worse and has managed to sink down to their level.

It was a PITA, but I did get them to lower that 300 dollar per box upgrade cost to 99 for both boxes. I was nervous about upgrading to the HR20, but it has worked perfectly the last few months. I'm looking forward to seeing the new HD channels in September when they start rolling out.

When DirecTV gets the same number of on demand channels as cable, then I'll switch back.

I will admit, the "4 free months of Platinum" with a Sunday Ticket purchase had me drooling last week, but then I found out there are no On Demand HBO or Showtime or Kids channels. I guess the technology is not there on those yet.

VOD is currently in beta testing (according to threads on dbstalk) and will likely be available before the end of the year.

I shocked my wife (and myself) by deciding to cancel my Sunday Ticket subscription this year. I just can't see paying $300+ for the amount of time I'm able to devote to watching games on Sundays anymore. Last year was not worth the money, so I'm preemptively taking action now to avoid another waste of money. Oh for the carefree days of yesteryear when I was able to spend 8 hours in front of the TV every Sunday. I'm now thankful that NBC has such a great package on Sunday night so we're almost guaranteed a stellar matchup every week. I just hope they can Pink.

Free Pink!

And I'm with you. Back in the day Sunday was wall to wall football. Now just can't spend the time and frankly don't yearn to. I have enough to take in the majority of Pats action and the NBC game.

spleen1015 07-25-2007 02:22 PM

If Direct TV ever gets HBO On Demand, I will switch.

lynchjm24 07-25-2007 02:27 PM

Anyone have any insight into what the best deal I can get right now is as someone switching to DTV.

The HD package from Comcast sucks in the town we are moving to.

I probably need 5 receivers - 2 of which would be HD w/ DVR.

The only thing I know I'm going to miss is that glorious time between like 3:45 and 4:15 when 8 games are ending all at once and I'm flipping furiously between 5 of them watching the endings. Other than that, I won't be around enough to watch like I used to.

I'm actually considering not playing fantasy football for the first time in 12 years or so. I think I'm tired of giving a shit and worrying about how many yards chester taylor has.

Ksyrup 07-25-2007 02:44 PM

I was there about 4 or so years ago. I have felt liberated ever since. I went from having 10 fantasy baseball teams in 2000 to out of fantasy sports by 2002 or 2003. Last league of any kind I did was with the FOFC, Jim was in it and it was fun, but I just decided I'd rather spend my Sundays watching games, not deciding whether I could enjoy a particular highlight until I checked to see if either I or my opponent had the guy who scored.
