Monitor going black

My LCD monitor is just fading to black all of a sudden. If I turn it off, then back on, the screen looks normal for a few moments, then it fades right back to black. Anyone ever experienced this, and know of a fix/workaround?

once you go black you can never go back? ;)

sorry...
to try to be more helpful, is it a laptop or a desktop? is it like it's sleeping? i think it may be trying to say it's time to think about a new monitor, but i'm not quite sure.

actually google turned this bit up to try to diagnose:

sounds like your LCD backlight has blown. if you shine a bright torch against the screen can you see images on it? if yes then it is your back light.

if on the other hand there is no image to be seen then the problem will lie within the wiring connections between your LCD and the motherboard and graphics. could be that a wire might have become worn and therefor broken off.

she stole my line, so I got nutthin

desktop....MAG monitor....has been working fine all evening...it did this last night, too

Ben E Lou 08-08-2007 08:55 PM

And it's a new monitor. I'm not sure the exact date, but I know it was purchased after we moved into our new house, and that was at the end of March.

Do you have a strong flashlight to shine against the screen?

Does it happen after it's been on a long time? Sounds like it might be something coming loose--or something that comes loose when it gets warm/hot.

If it's that new, it's probably still under warranty, I'd probably try to take it in to get repaired/replaced.

dammit, tk stole my line too.

stevew 08-08-2007 09:00 PM

I'd wager on the backlight as well.

Shined strong light...nothing. If I turn it off and turn it back on, it comes on for about 2 seconds, then fades out again.

Strong light + nothing = wiring issue I think. It might be something that happens as it gets warmer, but that's kind of what it's sounding like to me...

Good luck.

Wow, that might be more about tk's sex life than I ever wanted to know.

stevew 08-08-2007 09:15 PM

I hear they can give you a heck of a deal on some magazines, too.

Prehaps your monitor wants to be fulfilled alittle better...

Don't stop believing.

Did you get this monitor as a freebie with some other purchase?

I had my monitor start acting funky (a dell...go figure) sort of like that about a year ago. It would go black(as if I shut it off), and a decent "Fonzie-smack" would make it come back. It was very sporadic for a while, then became a regular occurrence. After a few months of that, it eventually shorted out, and actually smelled like burnt wires when it finally died.

So yeah...if your monitor is doing something like that, it might be a loose wiring connection inside the monitor. I didnt want to take mine apart early on(due to time & then if I f- it up, I HAVE to go buy a new one), but you might be better served to look inside it if that's something you're comfortable doing.

Draft Dodger 08-09-2007 08:17 AM

yeah, please don't take apart your monitor.

MikeVic 08-09-2007 09:22 AM

Well my line was used in the first post, so I don't have anything to contribute.

MizzouRah 08-09-2007 10:24 AM

Sounds like the monitor. If it's still under warranty, get it replaced. If not, it might be time to get that 24".
