Browser Strategy Game: Travian

Someone pointed me to this game, and I immediately thought of FOFC. Here it is for you all to peruse for a moment or two -- it's really slow paced, but looks like there's tons of room for strategy in it.

Basically, you are a Roman, Gaul or Teuton village. You can build up production of your main resources (Clay, Wood, Iron Ore and Crops), then use the resources to build buildings and such that will allow production of military units, etc. Take a look for yourself -- I'm on Server 5, I believe...Chelleville is my town. Still learning as I go, though.

Travian.

Neon_Chaos 09-03-2007 11:22 PM

Man.

This board is giving me reasons to eat up my free time. Jeez.

bbor 09-03-2007 11:30 PM

because . . . you are WUSS?!? :D

daedalus 09-04-2007 03:46 AM

i was tinkering with tribal wars with some of the people from my movoda guild for awhile. interesting while it lasted but, as i do not like to attack people (in spite of being santiago in SMAC), it was never going to be a long lasting game for me.

now, if we had a whole contingent of FOFC migrating to one of these games to make a tribe . . . i can see it being fun. and horrific. :D

Warhammer 09-04-2007 09:26 AM

I'm in, guess I'll try the server Vince is on.

Neon_Chaos 09-04-2007 09:37 AM

so, can we get a collective effort for FOFC to go over to one server? :)

Warhammer 09-04-2007 09:45 AM

Sounds good to me, I'll be using WarhammerII as my nick over there.

Neon_Chaos 09-04-2007 10:09 AM

Neon_Chaos 09-04-2007 02:54 PM

It looks like it quite is. :)

lordscarlet 09-04-2007 03:16 PM

I hate you all for pasting and encouraging this link.

lordscarlet 09-04-2007 03:28 PM

Should we setup an alliance?

I'm not sure exactly how to do that! So far I've just been working on building up my production :)

Warhammer 09-04-2007 03:46 PM

When I get to embassy level 3, I am starting the FOFC alliance.

Neon_Chaos 09-04-2007 03:49 PM

Sweet. :)

You need a Level 1 Embassy to join an alliance, and a Level 3 Embassy to create one.

Which guild in Movoda?

WVUFAN 09-04-2007 05:11 PM

This game is right up my alley.

Great find!

FrogMan 09-04-2007 09:13 PM

in as FrogMan, Gauls in Northwest too. Will probably only leisurely work on it though...

City's exact coordinate are (-68, 134) btw...

Brillig 09-04-2007 09:53 PM

Ah, fresh meat...I mean...an alliance partner. :)

Brillig 09-04-2007 09:58 PM

Don't try any funny stuff. Ze catz are watching j00.

Brillig 09-04-2007 10:04 PM

If you click on the "Plus" link, you see that you have a small store of Gold to buy various bonuses.

A fast start usually being pretty important, I blew half of my stash on the four production bonuses already.

Brillig 09-04-2007 10:23 PM

Hmm. "Merchants from my homeland arrived" bringing 200-300 of each resource. Random event?

I got the same. I assume all n00bs get it.

Vince 09-04-2007 11:04 PM

I believe you get it once you've upgraded one of each resource.

I'm at -101, -80. Foolishly built up to the capacity to make troops at first (Main Building Level 3, Rally Point Level 1), and added a few buildings as well (Granary, Cranny)...should have focused on production I think. I'm sitting at 17/20/14/12 with a cropland increase on the way -- I don't need so much crop at the moment, but I want to make sure I don't get painted into a corner without enough resources to increase my cropland so I can continue to build. I think once I get everything around level 2, I'll start churning out soldiers.

Nice find. I picked up the free Plus account and the four production bonuses...now my stash is gone :(

Vince 09-04-2007 11:12 PM

Ok, here's my status -- I'll update as cool things happen. With the 25% increase in production, I look a lot more hoss than I did five minutes ago :)

Chelleville
Location: -101, -80
Population: 30
Production (Lumber, Clay, Iron, Crop): 21, 25, 18, 28
Buildings:
Main Building (Lv. 3)
Granary (Lv. 1)
Rally Point (Lv. 1)
Barracks (Lv. 1)
Troops: None

bbor 09-04-2007 11:15 PM

Guys just a hint....Build up your fields to level 3 before you build anything exravagant in your town. All you really need is granary, main building and warehouse.

TazFTW 09-05-2007 12:24 AM

Hmmm, I've been playing Travian for a few months and have not heard of a Server 5. When I login there are only servers 1, 2, 3, and 3x.

[edit]Ah. I've been playing on travian.us. Server 5 is on travian.com

[2nd edit]I'm at -150, 6 on server 5.

alive. it's kinda fallen apart lately. ante (anterminator) was the first one to have said anything to me when i logged on (from jag's or masked's recommendation, i can't remember exactly). and nisa, who's been trying to hold things together, has been real cool.

let me know if you guys need some resource. i'll be glad to help. when i started, i was told y'all needed rock as you were building up the compound at the time but couldn't find any of your guildies on once i mined it.

Anyone know how to figure out how long you have until you can be attacked?

I think I read somewhere that all newbs get three days before becoming open game to everyone... Simply figure out when you started...

FM

Brillig 09-05-2007 05:32 PM

I guess we all started early enough that we get three days... the section from the rules says:
"There is a beginner protection in Travian which means that one can not be attacked in a period of 3 to max. 14 days depending on the time between start of the world to the activation of one's account.
You can calculate the exact time by extracting the root from the running time of the world up to the point when you registered your account."

Umm. Say what? :)

Exrtacting the root from the running time of the world?

Warhammer 09-05-2007 06:55 PM

I'm in the NE corner, so I'll be our advanced outpost on this side of the map.

lordscarlet 09-05-2007 08:17 PM

You should have gotten an in-game message that tells you how many days.

ah! yes, that's where I'd read about it:
Quote:

And one further hint: a cranny can be your best friend at the start, hiding your resources when aggressive player try to raid your village. Each new player has got 3 days of protection before he can be attacked, though.

There it was...

And there's also the explanation for the deliveries of resources that Brillig mentionned earlier, in another message:
Quote:

After constructing a cranny level 1 you will receive three deliveries of resources from us.

heh, pays to read the mail sometimes :)

FM

Warhammer 09-05-2007 10:50 PM

The Gauls get 3 deliveries?!?!? For a stinking Cranny?
