No More Making Fun of the Canadian Dollar!

For the first time in over 30 years, the Canadian Dollar is worth MORE than the US Dollar.

What a turnaround from a couple years ago...at least you can still make fun of Celine Dion but not our colourful currency! ;)

Canadian Dollar Climbs Above Parity With US Dollar

September 20, 2007 11:27am ET

TORONTO -(Dow Jones)- The Canadian dollar moved briefly above the U.S. dollar late Thursday morning as it continues its sustained push higher against the greenback, although it has once again dropped back slightly below parity.

It marks the Canadian dollar's first foray into levels higher than its U.S. counterpart since November 1976.

The U.S. dollar reached its lowest trading level of the session so far of C$0.9998 just before 11:00 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT), according to electronic trading system EBS.

It has since rebounded to the C$1.0012 level. The two currencies have danced around the parity level Thursday morning after the U.S. dollar touched it briefly in earlier trading, with the U.S. dollar pressured by broadly based weakness as well as continued positive momentum in the Canadian unit.

Yeah, I like that. I hope it stays like this into next year. Planning on doing some more shopping down there.

Travis 09-20-2007 10:49 AM

shhhhhhhhhhhhhh, they're not supposed to know about this phase of the plan yet.

With Canadian oil and mineral reserves, and a potential US recession (if the home ownership crisis gets any worse), I'd say this could well be the rule, and not the exception.

What does a recession mean? Like, people are spending more money on houses, so they can't buy other stuff...?

Recession means Americans buy less Canadian beer.

Oh what the hell, that's just silly.

In other news, Canada is still America's Hat.

Toonies would fit the theme better.

Oh yeah, Toonie. I don't know how it's supposed to be spelled... but that looks better.

See... You Canucks may be richer, but we still got Bush!

Blade 09-20-2007 04:46 PM

Sweet! Going to LA in just over a month...time to buy lots of stuff!

JeeberD 09-20-2007 04:55 PM

As long as the price of Unibroue beers don't go up I really don't give a damn..

Greyroofoo 09-20-2007 05:20 PM

This is a sad day indeed. Our greenbacks are now worth less than Canuck Monopoly money.

molson 09-20-2007 05:32 PM

Canada rules. The dollar situation was just a bonus. I remember going to Montreal 5 or 6 times in a 2 year stretch where you could almost cut the Canadian price of stuff in half to figure out how much US currency you were shelling out.

sterlingice 09-20-2007 07:47 PM

SI

I hate Canada so much.

No, I'm not kidding. Just ask Maple Leafs.

Wolfpack 09-20-2007 09:56 PM

Damn glad that we did our honeymoon in Canada in 2001. Would've been brutal to do it dollar-for-dollar as it is now.

Interestingly, we've got some whacked out consipiracy theorists on the State board who are utterly convinced this is yet another step on the road to a North American Union of some kind between the US, Canada, and Mexico.

JPhillips 09-20-2007 10:01 PM

Bubba posts on the State board?

Mebbe so. We've got folks claiming that the little reflector sticker on the back of NC licenses that show the northern half of the western hemisphere are, in fact, a way to show that North Carolina driver's licenese are ready for usage in the coming union.
