And the Blue Jays finally put some blue back in their jerseys, reverting an old 80s retro standard.

Karlifornia 09-21-2007 01:53 AM

Haha. Those Blue Jays uniforms are terrible. Button-down, short-sleeved (read: no sleeveless) shirts are the way to go. The Blue Jays will be wearing my pajamas for the next year. That's good, if they need to run to the kitchen for a glass of milk during a game next year, but for baseball? At best, they look like a slo-pitch team. And that baby blue...ugh..when it works, it looks really good (see:UCLA), but when it doesn't work, it's terrible.

Oh, and I hereby welcome the Tampa Bay Mariners into the league.

k0ruptr 09-21-2007 02:16 AM

I like the jays jerseys

Young Drachma 09-21-2007 02:23 AM

Anything is better than the Blue Jays wearing black. Even if it's just once a week. And I hate how they jettisoned the Maple Leaf in recent years, so....it's good to go back to the old look, because we were most successful in it.

I don't prefer this one as much as I do the look the team wore during the '92 and '93 title seasons, but baby steps I guess.

Karlifornia 09-21-2007 02:27 AM

I really think they need to do just..uhm...royal blue, is it? No....Well, darker blue and white. That would look really sharp if they designed it right. I think their logo is timeless (which is amazing, considering how new the franchise is).

Young Drachma 09-21-2007 02:32 AM

Young Drachma 09-21-2007 02:33 AM

That's what they need to go back to. Retro? Sure. But what they have now is no good. And they've been misfiring constantly since they left that design.

Terps 09-21-2007 02:59 AM

I wish the O's would put Baltimore back on the road jerseys.

sterlingice 09-21-2007 06:50 AM

I've always thought Tampa should have been called the Sting Rays because Devil Rays was, well, dumb.

SI

Toddzilla 09-21-2007 07:20 AM

No changes in the Cubs uni's

CraigSca 09-21-2007 08:12 AM

I love the retro Blue Jays look. Their lettering and numbering was always cool. Their current jersey with the "angry" Blue Jay looks stupid to me.

bryce 09-21-2007 08:19 AM

Maybe I have 'Good Ole Days' Syndrome, but I love those 80s unis, pretty much all of 'em, even the old orange TB Bucs unis. Ok, one exception - the old off-white Astros with multi-color stripes, those were truly terrible.

Mizzou B-ball fan 09-21-2007 08:25 AM

Sweet! KC back in the powder blue unis. Royals fans have been asking for the return of the powder blues for some time.

Thank God Cincy is finally fixing that.

cuervo72 09-21-2007 08:57 AM

I would *love* to see more powder blue unis come back, always liked them. Good to see the Jays going to a "retro" alt too. This current stuff...not good.

Maple Leafs 09-21-2007 10:00 AM

Some day somebody will write a book about stupid marketing decisions and have a chapter about the Blue Jays uniform changes in the last decade

"Well, on the one hand we have years of history with a certain logo and color scheme, which includes the glory years when we the most popular brand in the entire city and were winning world championships. On the other hand, this forecasts says that if we change everything we may increase merchandising sales by 0.1%. Let's change it!"

Seriously, I get angry just thinking about this.

I've spent the past thirteen years or so, shaking my head. I mean, it's not like the team hadn't experienced success or that there wasn't a blueprint for HOW you make a successful ballclub in that city. I just don't understand what those fools are doing up there other than trying to turn the Jays into some sort of novelty act or make the false assumption that since no one in the Lower 48 supposedly "cares" about the team, that they have to do more to "spruce" up the team's image or whatever.

Clearly, it hasn't worked. They need to cut it out and get back to basics.

I miss this Phillies uni:

Er... like from when I was two. The new alt is kinda dull.

C'mon. The brown and yellow Padres unis?

stevew 09-21-2007 05:48 PM

I liked it better when the Phillies were more Maroon, and less Red.

cuervo72 09-21-2007 06:32 PM

You know, I welcomed the switch to the 50's look (and the red) when it came, but I wouldn't mind seeing the maroon back either.

Buccaneer 09-21-2007 07:14 PM

As one growing up in the 70s, I hated those garish softball units. Many don't like the uni-color jerseys and pants of football, so why have them (or bring them back) in baseball?

cuervo72 09-21-2007 08:07 PM

As opposed to uni-color white, or uni-color gray? :)

Buccaneer 09-21-2007 08:19 PM

White and gray are not colors. :)

cuervo72 09-21-2007 08:35 PM

Hrm...how about all black then? :D

saldana 09-21-2007 09:27 PM

is changing the name and colors in tampa somehow going to help them not suck?

saldana 09-21-2007 09:29 PM

dola, for those of you who like the powder blue uniforms, keep an eye out for the Philadelpha EAGLES throwbacks they are gonna be sporting (not sure if it this weekend or not)...not sure when exactly they are throwing back to, but they are gonna be as bad or worse than the crap the steelers were wearing last week.

Heard the Lions are playing Phil this week in 1935 throwbacks...make the Lions look like the first year of FBPro.

stevew 09-21-2007 09:45 PM

those eagle uniforms are fugly.

They should have thrown them back.

Tampa's got some serious young talent, both hitting (which most people know) and pitching (which most people don't know). Their brutal fielding this year is obscuring how well their staff has done, especially since jettisoning Fossum and Seo, but there's talent there now and in their minors.

Chuck LaMar wasn't much as a GM, but his replacement Andrew Friedman is doing a very good job.

Let's be honest here. Do you realistically see any scenerio whereby in the next 5 years they can actually finish 2nd in the division, and make the playoffs. Unless Boston or NY decide to shit the bed, it just isn't going to happen. Hell, the Jays are a fairly good team as well.

Wow, those Eagles throwbacks look exactly like the football version of the New Orleans Hornets. And yes, the Hornets really need new unis...

cuervo72 09-21-2007 11:44 PM

Hrm. I actually like powder blue and yellow.

You really suck.

The Lions throwbacks are the best in the league. Seriously.

Jim G. 09-22-2007 12:56 AM

The Ray Rays can try this new slogan:

No, they are not. You cannot have a decent throwback from an era that used leather helmets.

All the teams with the decent throwbacks come from the AFL. Since that started in the 60s the teams all kind of look like they did back then.

GreenMonster 09-22-2007 01:16 PM

No changes with the Red Sox uniforms. Shocking..

Maple Leafs 09-22-2007 02:20 PM

By the way, do all these new baseball home and away uniforms mean that some teams are actually going to go back to having home and away uniforms? You know, instead of every team having like eight different jerseys and three types of pants and they just randomly pick a combination every game? White, dark, home, away, who cares just put something on and play?

See, I warned you, I get angry about this.

Yeah, I do. Boston is likely always going to be in the hunt with the current ownership and GM. The Yankees? Not necessarily, not with a wild card like Steinbrenner in control. People seem to forget the 80's, when his ridiculous tempestuousness with managers and GM's and stupid free agent spending kept them out of the playoffs from 1982-1994. If Steinbrenner gets a wild hair, cans Torre and/or Cashman and goes batshit crazy again, the Yankees could certainly tumble.

And yes, the young talent in Tampa's system is that good. Toronto? They'll keep floating around 3rd place territory, trying to look competitive, but Ricciardi ain't Beane or Epstein.

Logan 09-22-2007 02:44 PM

Steinbrenner is in bad health and has almost no involvement with the team. Those days of him making insane decisions are gone, unfortunately.

stevew 09-22-2007 03:28 PM

The Yankees have an impressive crop of young pitchers, and can buy any hitter they want. I think there is almost zero chance they fall off for the next 5-10 years.

Young Drachma 09-22-2007 03:40 PM

Crop? I wouldn't call it a crop. Either way, I think that it's unlikely they're going to fall off like they did from say 1983-1994.

BTW, I really like the "Rays" new logo, it's pretty clean and sharp.

On the other hand, there goes another team that gives up their unique colors and reverts to some sort of blue. Wahoo, a league full of blue and red teams.
