I need a new Hobby

I am looking for something challenging and time consuming. I don't play much poker anymore, WOW is boring beyond belief now, and my mountain bike is in the shop. Anyone take up a new hobby lately that they have been enjoying, I am not sure what to get into next.

MikeVic 09-28-2007 02:50 PM

Golf.

Lathum 09-28-2007 02:51 PM

Wii

MikeVic 09-28-2007 02:51 PM

S&M is good too.

Mustang 09-28-2007 02:53 PM

Model building.

sabotai 09-28-2007 02:54 PM

Learn a foreign language.
Learn a musical instrument.
Research your family tree.

Those are the three I picked up this year. German is the language I picked mostly because I took it in high school so I am familiar with it, but I pretty much had forgotten everything. And I started to teach myself to play the piano. Both are pretty low cost. The Rosetta Stone software for languages is a bit pricey ($300+), but books for learning languages aren't. You can get a pretty good keyboard relatively cheap. I think the keyboard I got ran me about $200 or so (compared to how much a full electronic piano will run you, that's pretty cheap).

Catch up to JeeberD in posts, but give yourself the restriction that each post must have a number of characters (including spaces) equal to what your post count will be once you've completed it.

No.

GreenMonster 09-28-2007 03:00 PM

This hobby would get old quickly, I am not sure I have Jeebers drive..

MJ4H 09-28-2007 03:17 PM

Go. (seriously, the game)

Fidatelo 09-28-2007 03:22 PM

Paint miniatures. The more time you invest getting good and adding detail, the more rewarding it is.

JPhillips 09-28-2007 03:25 PM

Photography.

Impotent rage.

Those work for me.

That's a bad example.

Bowling! Just buy some shoes for about $40 and a nice mid-range performance ball for $150 (including drilling, etc.), and you're good to go!

If you're not really into that, I suggest kegels, poker, or WoW.

I am actually just went the other day.. Bowling rocks but I am looking for a more time consuming hobby, I can work on daily.

I'm sure you were serious here, but this sounds like first-rate torture to me. ;)

That would probably make me blind.

Of course I have another hobby that is supposed to make you blind

As with any hobby, practicing multiple times a day is the only way to turn that hobby into a profession.

Warhammer 09-28-2007 04:28 PM

Boardgaming. There's tons out there and they fill every niche of the spectrum.

Reyna 09-28-2007 04:38 PM

You could : A- Make a roster set for OOTP2007 B- Join the Christy Canyon fan club C- Start a saltwater fish tank , pay $50 each for beautiful fish ..only to watch them rip each other to shreds!

Mustang 09-28-2007 04:39 PM

Program your own game.

Also nominate boardgames. If you don't have a live group there are plenty of solitaire type ones out there in addition to playing many games online.

CamEdwards 09-28-2007 05:04 PM

My wife took up bellydancing a year ago and she really likes it. I haven't seen any guys in her class, but I'm sure you could be a trendsetter.

terpkristin 09-28-2007 05:12 PM

Well, the hobby I picked up when I needed something time-consuming and able to do even when my body didn't cooperate (read: when I injured myself) was cross-stitching. I don't see too many guys doing it, but I do know that the Boise State RB (Ian Johnson? Whoever he is, they did a feature on him last year on ESPN, and his hobby was a large portion of it) crochets, so maybe you could pick that up? (I'm more than half serious).

I like the idea of board games, though I'd probably end up tied more to a computer.

Have you tried chess? Getting good requires time/practice/study.

When someone else asked this before, I mentioned photography. Keeping a camera on you at all times, and just shooting a ton, is a good way to start...of course, as a girl, it's probably easier for me to keep a camera with me, as I can keep it in my bag, guys usually rely on pockets...

Become a champion hot dog eater?

Icy 09-28-2007 05:14 PM

Lucky you, i would need days with 72 hours to enjoy all the hobbies i have.

GreenMonster 09-28-2007 05:32 PM

Go looks like a tough game that many people play. I may give it a try this weekend. I am doing an online tutorial now. Thanx for all that have given ideas you have started my mind in new directions.

Hey, you're married now. You still masturbate for a hobby?

Nevermind... you didn't say you were diddling yourself!

If you're going to go this route, I'd recommend getting a friend who wants to help. Some of the steps involved with homebrewing can be quite difficult with only one pair of hands, in my experience.

Wait...there's an alternative??

I was actually going to suggest FOF MP too - maybe even run one.

Another idea could be to donate your time to charity - be a big brother, help out at a soup kitchen, etc.

Karlifornia 09-28-2007 06:41 PM

Get a cheap guitar or keyboard, get a few months worth of once or twice a week lessons, and go from there.

RendeR 09-28-2007 06:56 PM

Warhammer is a fun engaging time/life comsuming hobby that allows you to socialize, drink heavily and travel to numerous large tournaments during the year.

Not only do you get to collect and simulate battles with your armies but you get to build and paint all the little models as well.

If this hobby doesn't consume your every free waking hour after a week or two of getting involved in it then you're a hopeless case and should simply masturbate to kill time.

Crack kills... Metal crack kills after it makes you broke.

Now if you wanted to do something fun with minis in the Warhammer universe Blood Bowl is perfectly acceptable.

Also, I would warn against Go. Go with other boardgames. It is easier to find someone interested in playing. Go to boardgamegeek.com to get some ideas for games you might be interested in.

Also, what part of the country are you in? There are many game groups in different parts of the country that would be willing to welcome you into their group.

Peregrine 09-29-2007 12:26 PM

I second boardgames, they've been my hobby for several years, they're fun, there's a lot of strategy to them and they make you think, and you get to meet a lot of new people. It somewhat depends on where you live though, if you're in a rural area you may find less people to play with.

EagleFan 09-29-2007 12:41 PM

Kayaking - since you already have a mountain bike I am assuming that outdoors stuff is a good option.

Tyrith 09-29-2007 12:48 PM

Take up golf. It's nice and time consuming. It also has the added side benefit of making you angry all the time, so that everyone likes you more! Wait....that's not right...maybe you're better off not taking up golf after all.

Marc Vaughan 09-29-2007 01:37 PM

How about flying remote control airplanes - they look cool as heck to me, but with three young kids they'd have next to no survival rate with me (proved by the fact that I've got two broken remote control helicopters* in the house currently ;) ).

*Small cheap ones - I knew their lifespan was going to be somewhat restricted.
