Tournament of Rock, Rd 1, Grp 3: Metallica vs. Buddy Holly

Vote for the group you would see if both were in concert.

Lathum 11-06-2007 08:59 PM

Before 1990 Metallica was the best band in the world

Lorena 11-06-2007 09:07 PM

vote lathum

korme 11-06-2007 09:11 PM

What a shit draw for Buddy Holly.

Hello people, this whole tournament could largely be attributed TO Buddy Holly. He was the first.

MrBug708 11-06-2007 09:36 PM

Oh man, poor Buddy Holly. Metallica is nice and all, but it's Buddy Effing Holly

Lathum 11-06-2007 09:38 PM

Maybe Bucc could tell us what Buddy Holly was like in concert? :D

Groundhog 11-06-2007 09:41 PM

I've seen Metallica live... wasn't impressed. Left early to catch the Flaming Lips.

please leave your testicles behind. K. thx.

MrBug708 11-06-2007 09:47 PM

To be fair, Metallica's songs sound more similiar then those done by Good Charlotte

not before 1990 they didn't

Drake 11-06-2007 10:24 PM

I saw Metallica live three times between the winter of 1988 and the fall of 1989. They were an awesome live experience.

Then the Black album came out. I said, "Meh", and never listened to them again.

QFT.

Actually, I'd be forced to include the black album which was 1991. Tho for some reason, it's become really trendy to hate on that album in the last few years.

SI

Drake 11-06-2007 10:25 PM

dola...

When I say, "never listened to them again", I mean that I stopped buying/listening to new albums. The old ones are still classics. Just wanted to clarify that before Lathum beat me with a nail-studded baseball bat. :)

good thing you did. I was getting ready to come across state lines.

FWIW I was/am the same way with them.

Radii 11-06-2007 11:07 PM

I enjoyed the black album, I guess it took one album longer before I no longer thought they were the greatest band in the world.

sabotai 11-07-2007 12:18 AM

There were a couple of really kickass songs on the Black Album (Of Wolf And Man for one), but yeah, you could hear them go sharply downhill with that album.

It's a shame this is a tourament of who rocks the best, and not who rocked first.

Fidatelo 11-07-2007 08:30 AM

It would be a real shame to see Buddy lose to a bunch of ass-clowns like Metallica.

gkb 11-07-2007 08:31 AM

This is a lot closer than I thought it would be.

Lathum 11-07-2007 08:42 AM

buddy Holly making a late charge

Drake 11-07-2007 08:50 AM

People are remember the whole Napster fiasco.

Mr. Wednesday 11-07-2007 10:57 AM

Whatever my opinions of Metallica as people, it's irrelevant to my opinion of them as musicians.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's the tournament of who you'd like to see in concert, and depending on the person, "who rocked first" might be a better draw.

In my world the Black Album was the last one they made. Therefore, I voted for Metallica.

korme 11-07-2007 11:25 AM

Excellent point larry. Buddy Holly is dead so I'd rather see him in concert, rocking Peggy Sue\

It would have been quite interesting to see what would have happened had Holly not died at 22 and Ritchie Valens at 17.

Easy Mac 11-07-2007 11:25 AM

There's a reason the song isn't "ooo eee ooo I look just like James Hetfield"

Mustang 11-07-2007 01:01 PM

Buddy Holly wouldn't be crap if it wasn't for Dr. Sam Beckett helping him out.

CamEdwards 11-07-2007 01:21 PM

Count me in for Buddy Holly. Every time I listen to Buddy Holly I think about how great it would be for someone to update his songs, just to kind of bring them forward a bit. There's such a great primitive energy to his music. If he were a young musician today he would make Jack White look like Barry Fucking Manilow.

Their music wasn't the only thing that changed with (or after) the Black Album.

Fidatelo 11-07-2007 02:36 PM

Wow Buddy by 1 right now... so close. Come on Buddy fans, let's put this one away!

Kodos 11-07-2007 02:45 PM

Buddy... Can't bust him!

I thought that was MC Hammer?

Kodos 11-07-2007 03:32 PM

Technically, it's Buddy Lee, and it's his dungarees that you can't bust.

Kodos 11-07-2007 08:38 PM

Metallica has 20 minutes to make up a three vote deficit.

Atocep 11-08-2007 11:53 AM

First, Slick Rick loses in the 1st round of the Tournament of Rick.

Now, Metallica loses in the 1st round of the Tournament of Rock.

You disappoint me FOFC.
