This thread is for dog/puppy owners

We have an American Eskimo and a Pomeranian (along with 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs) - I've always wanted a Golden Retriever and I can't believe I'm thinking about getting one today.. 3 dogs, I'm NUTS!!!

There is an ad in the paper for GR puppies and I just spoke to a nice lady who has 1 boy puppy left and is holding it for me. I know if I go, it's all over with.

My kids would go nuts and my wife would freak out (in a good way).

Decisions, decisions...

MrBug708 11-09-2007 11:48 AM

Yeah.. but my vaccuum doesn't. :D

Easy Mac 11-09-2007 11:54 AM

my dog is staring at me right now, he's hovering over the tennis ball... his eyes are saying "fucking reach down and throw the ball".

He just hit it to me with his paw. I think the dog is human.

Honolulu_Blue 11-09-2007 12:13 PM

I would love to be able to have two dogs, but I don't think our dog would handle it well. He gets along with other dogs, but just a little too well. He gets a bit crazy when he's with other dogs and just wants to play, play, play all the time.

We have friends who bring their dog (Billy) over about once a week or so, or we bring our dog (Aegon) to their place. Aegon rarely ever calms down when he's around Billy. He paces around, tail wagging, constantly wanting to play. Even one poor Billy is tired and tries to hide, Aegon will keep pawing at him relentlessly.

We leave Aegon at doggy daycare twice a week and apparently it's no different there. Apparently he is in such a rush to play that he eats too fast and drinks too fast and then ends up throwing-up frequently.

I am sure he would work this out of his system eventually, but I wouldn't want to take that risk. He's still less than 2 years old, so it's likely he'll calm down and we can get another dog in the future.

Lathum 11-09-2007 12:23 PM

We have a golden. He is the nicest most friendly dog I have ever had. He has a great temperment, is awesome with the kids and is very smart and loyal. He listens well and is as well behaved as you could expect.

The only knock on goldens is they bark alot and shed alot.

Maybe I should have gotten a golden retriever instead of a wife.

My family has a yellow lab, and he's frigging awesome. Golden labs are a good substitute. ;)

Btw, my cousins have a newfoundland - possibly the coolest dogs ever. Wrestling with a 140 lb newfy is entertaining at worst. :D

Easy Mac 11-09-2007 12:31 PM

Black Labs are the kickingest ass color of labs

Do it!!

Dog chaos is a good kind of chaos.

MizzouRah 11-09-2007 01:18 PM

Yeah, I'm sure once I hold the little guy, he'll be coming home with me.

My poop scooping is really going to pick up. :(

GoldenEagle 11-09-2007 01:21 PM

I have four dogs, take the plunge.

Fidatelo 11-09-2007 02:05 PM

I'd love to get a second dog, but the wife won't do it. Personally I think 2 would be easier (or at least no more difficult) as they would entertain themselves a lot. She just sees twice the number of dirty paws and poop.

It took me a solid 4 minutes to figure out where your dog started and ended due to that brown/black thing he's on top of.

oliegirl 11-09-2007 05:36 PM

We have a puppy, Weeble (aka Weebs)...he's as sweet as can be and I love him to death - wouldn't trade him for the world! We are looking for a house to rent and we can find (and afford) one with a fenced in backyard, we'll likely get another puppy at some point in the not too distant future.

Definitely get the puppy - they are like kids, sure they are work and annoy the crap out of you sometimes, but at the end of the day, when you snuggle up next to them in bed it's all worth it...and be sure to post pics once you get him home and the chaos dies down :D

MizzouRah 11-09-2007 07:56 PM

Well, talked the guy down to $700 and I'm quite happy with the purchase!!

He's so calm and loveable.. my wife went nuts when I asked her to get something out of the car - and there was Benny! :)

I don't have a digital camera, so I'll borrow my neighbors tomorrow and post some pictures.

I guarantee its better value than a PS3! :D

Congrats - Benny's the name? Have your kid's had a say yet?

JetsIn06 11-09-2007 08:24 PM

Me and my girlfriend adopted a 7 year old Beagle last May. I love it and wish we could get another dog. We will eventually but we live in a very small apartment.

I will post pics soon.

Congrats on the new puppy! Post pics!

We have a golden as well and I have to agree. He is by far the nicest dog I've ever encountered. He's friendly, very gentle for his size (~100 lbs) and he hardly ever misbehaves. The only behavioral thing is that he is terrified of loud noises (not uncommon for any dog really) so it can get bad when you have 100lbs trying to wedge itself behind furniture and knocking things over during a thunderstorm or fireworks.

The only problem is that he's had a lot of health issues. Fortunately nothing serious- but he has hypo-thyroid (which he takes pills for everyday), when he was a couple of months old he had an abscess that had to be removed, he gets ear infections often, has bad allergies and gets plenty of hotspots. Sometimes he licks his whole stomach raw.

I'll take those health issues in trade for how he is, though. With his temperament you really feel like he is man's best friend and not just some animal living in your house.

That's cheap. A couple of places had them as much as $1200-$1500.

That's great to hear, well.. besides the health issues. Just seeing how he is makes me feel like I made the right choice. He's a puppy, but he's so mild mannered.

My dog head buts me and barks. Then drops his mini football in my lap. Damn mini-shnauzer

I'll get my neighbors camera again and get some more shots.

Thank you!

I can already tell it's going to be alot easier to house train him than it was our American Eskimo. (crosses fingers)

molson 11-11-2007 09:16 PM

How's he interacting with the other dogs? My first thought was that American Eskimo aren't known for being particularly good with other dogs, but then I realized that they aren't actually husky derivatives. (At holidays at my house, I was in charge of keeping our Siberian Husky away from the other relative's dogs). She did not approve of their presence.

He's doing well. His playmate right now is our big outside cat who loves to play with about any animal that wants to play.

Our American Eskimo wasn't happy with him at first, but he's already coming around and is starting to tolerate interacting with him. The pomeranian could care less as she rarely leaves the friendly confines underneath our bed. :)

The puppy as most puppies do, has eaten some grass, dirt, old flowers, etc.. and every now and then acts like he's going to puke - so I've been keeping watch most of the day. I'm just glad we have a nice big fenced in yard for him to roam on days like today (70+ degrees).

MizzouRah 03-07-2008 06:03 PM

Remember Benny?

4 Months later......

CamEdwards 03-07-2008 06:30 PM

Good lord! That's a helluva difference! Is he still as laid back as he was when you got him?

DaddyTorgo 03-07-2008 06:32 PM

sweet jesu...that boy done grown up!

Danny 03-07-2008 06:32 PM

I thought this thread was for dog/pumpy owners

Lathum 03-07-2008 06:34 PM

Is he a golden?

MizzouRah 03-07-2008 07:40 PM

Yes, he's still pretty laid back. He has a clothes basket full of chew stuff and he likes to chew on everything.. he still jumps up on occasion when company comes over, loves to aggrivate the other animals and can be a PITA at times.. but overall, a great dog so far.

I can't believe he's grown so fast though.. sweet jeebers!

Yes, he's a golden and loves to retrieve anything thrown away from him. :)

mauchow 03-07-2008 11:44 PM

Uhhh... Where's the pic at?

JetsIn06 03-08-2008 11:00 AM

Here's my beagle. :)

Here's my beagle on Halloween, dressed as a strawberry. :D

Your dog sounds like my dog's twin and apparently you live 5 minutes fro me. They should get together to play. :)

What doggie daycare do you use? We go to Bubble & Bark in Ferndale.
