Another FOFC'er Unemployed :(
 

I switched jobs back in October, gave up a 25 mile each way commute and hellish hours (9:30 - 6:30) for a less than 5 mile commute and regular 8 - 5 hours. Loved the job, great people to work with, got along with my boss, everything seemed great.

Fast forward to yesterday, all the managers (US President, VP, Sales Manager, Controller, HR) got back from the annual meeting in Germany (World HQ of the company) with news that they have to reduce staff by 3 in the office and 3 in the warehouse. I was one of the 3...last hired, first fired and all that. And the freaking week before Christmas.

Life Sucks.

If anyone knows of any Customer Service/Office Admin/Project Manger type jobs in the Metro Atlanta area, please let me know...

Crap, sorry to read this. Try to forget and enjoy your holidays if you can and i'm sure the new year will be a good one.

Not the best circumstances, obviously, but maybe it's a good time to enjoy family and friends and look forward to a fresh start in the new year.

Oh man, sorry to hear that oliegirl :( Think of all the people that left when you first got hired! Maybe it's a blessing in disguise.. you never know.

Thanks guys - I'm trying to focus on the positive, tomorrow is my son's last day of school so I'll get to spend his Christmas break with him, which is good. I've already bought xmas gifts for the ones I really needed to, and I have an amazing family who love me. Tis the season to be jolly!

Sorry to hear the bad news. Not that being let go is ever really a good thing (or is it?), but why can't these asshole companies ever do that during the summer? At least you could go to the beach or something, and you wouldn't have to worry about the holidays right away. Anyway, good luck finding something, I am sure it will happen for you very soon.

I'm not sure which is worse, the fact that you would jump on your desk and sing or the fact that you expect to get fired...again....???;)

That sucks. Sorry. Remember that you have the option to take COBRA from them if you need health insurance before you get a new job (though it is crazy expensive).

COBRA is way crazy expensive. :eek:

EF27 posting here reminds me that, in my experience, losing a job can be very hard psychologically. The darkest chapter in my life came after losing what wasn't even a very good job. Don't let that happen to you.

I'm not eligible for COBRA as I was only there 60 days and hadn't even gotten benefits yet. I've been without health insurance since October 31st...sucks but there is no way I could afford COBRA.

Again, thanks for the well wishes - just reading what you guys have written is helping...like I said, I'm focusing on spending the holidays with my son, and my family, and continuing to send resumes out every day. Heading to the unemployment office early tomorrow morning, that should be fun...

Speaking of horrible timing, the Don Pablo's across the highway from us closed down on Monday. Apparently the management team was informed of the closure a week before, but they didn't tell the staff until Sunday. All those folks, out of a job right before Christmas...

Damn that sucks. Don Pablo's has good food too. At least they did the last time I ate there, which was about 5 years ago.

I went to the unemployment office this morning, and ironically, the guy told me I'd be better off filing on 1/2. Seems that I'll be eligible for around $260 in benefits for 11 weeks if I filed today, but by waiting until the 2nd, I'm eligible for $320 for 14 weeks. Go figure. So back I'll go on the 2nd...good to know what I'll be getting, and took a lot of stress away.

Hopefully this knowledge will allow you to somewhat enjoy the holidays. ;)

you know what, no life doesn't suck. You still have your son, your health, your luck will turn around eventually. Cheer up and keep your chin up. :)

Yeah, this situation does suck, but I'm hoping for you it'll turn out as good as it did for me, 9 years ago. I was laid off a couple weeks before Christmas in 1998, on a Friday, the same day my wife and I were supposed meet at a local shopping mall after work to eat a bite and do all of our Christmas shopping. I kept a straight face while eating a burger, until I told her. We still went through and did some shopping, just bought a bit less. It took me 5 months to find a job I was comfortable and happy with. It's the job I'm still in to this day. A job I love and enjoy.

Maybe the current event will be your luck to find something else, or maybe they will call you back, for good this time. I wish you the best of luck. Enjoy the time with your son.

Very good advice. Sometimes the worst events can lead to the best results. In our case, we have sacrificed quite a bit of income in order for my wife to stay home with our 2 year old and 5 month old girls. We save on daycare, and we are not allowing someone else to raise our children. Sometimes it is frustrating for my wife being at home during the day, but she gets time with the kids that is priceless. Once they are grown up, these times will constitute great memories for her. She runs a small daycare out of our home as well to bring in some money, but until next year she has had no more than 2 other children at a time, so in reality I am the one bringing in most of the income. It is a sacrifice we are both happy to make to ensure our little ones get the care they deserve at such a critical time in their life. Yes, enjoy the time with your son. Things will turn around for those that truly care about themselves and others. You seem to fit that description. Some day you will look back at all of this and laugh. :)

As one of those who lost their job not too long ago, it is amazing what doors can open once one closes. Keep your head up!

Wow, oliegirl, so sorry to hear that! I didn't come to FOFC yesterday, and I come today to find such awful news. :(

I remember all too well what it was like to be unemployed without insurance or such, but it sounds like you're in as OK a place with it as I guess you can be, you're pretty dang positive! Here's hoping that something great comes along in the new year, and that this will have somehow been a blessing in disguise.

It is helping, but it's just really crappy timing...we were getting ready to sign an lease on a new and much bigger apartment, but my portion of the rent/moving expenses/etc...is $1000 - which I don't have and even if I empty my checking account (which I don't want to do) I'll still be a little short. I figure I'll start collecting the unemployment sometime around the end of January, but they won't hold the place for us that long...so I'm seriously stressing over that, but I know things will work out one way or the other.

Anyway, sorry for rambling - helps to get it out and I can only unload on my bf so much...

It's a crappy situation that's for sure.

May I suggest reading the "How many 5 years old can you take?" thread to lighten your mood some. It's an oldie but a goodie.

Sorry to hear it Ollie. Being in the mortgage business it seems to be the trend to let people go between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I never have understood why businesses couldn't wait another week or two until after the holidays. Best of luck.
