Anybody Play Fantasy Wars?
I just checked out the review to this turn based strategy game over on Gamestop. They said:
# Tightly designed turn-based strategy # Intricate map design with lots of enemies and lots of surprises # Retro look and sound perfectly fit the gameplay # Extremely difficult # Perhaps a little too old-school for contemporary gamers # Only supports direct connections and LAN in multiplayer modes I don't know if its negatives are truly negatives for the FOFC audience, so I was wondering if anybody here had played it? |
Haven't played it, but my interest is definitely up.

I got it as a Christmas gift from a friend. I've played through the first 3 or 4 missions and found them to be fairly easy. However, it has been reasonably entertaining. I don't think I'd pay for it at the current price, but if it dropped down a bit, it would be a good purchase.

As you get deeper, let us know how it goes.

If you don't mind, of course :)

No problem. I'm glad to try to answer specific questions as well.

Sounds like Fantasy General.
That's a very good thing. Interested to see what you think. |
It's getting a 73 on Metacritic. Sounds like old-school fans will like it much better than most.

It definitely reminds me of Fantasy General. My biggest gripe so far is that different units don't have unique enough upgrades. For example, they call it different things, but all units seem to get the plus 1 defense upgrade as an option. If there was more variety of upgrades and a bit stronger AI, I'd say it is worth 40 dollars. However, right now, the AI isn't challenging me much (I've lost one unit in 4 battles) and I don't feel like I'm getting to make my units as distinctive as they advertise. It's still enjoyable. |
Darn you .... having read this thread I 'had' to go and order it ... ;)
(no it doesn't sound 'perfect' by any stretch - but there are few enough turn based strategy games that I find it compulsory to support those still around) |

Any more info on this game? As a big fan of the old Fantasy General, Lords of the Realm, Dune-style turn RTS games, this one peaked my interest. I also see that I can get Heroes of MM V for $10-15. For anyone that has played both, which would be the best game (and use of my limited gaming time)? Price isn't as big a deal as I don't buy many games - it's more about enjoyment/time spent.

I can't comapre to F Wars, but I thought HOMM5, and I didn't play much because I got tired of it, was too similar to HOMM4, and they had a lot of design flaws, like forcing you to take certain paths and walk all the way around the map, even when you have killed all opponents, in order to finish some dumb quest, or having amega hard battle at the end that you have to spend months preparing for, even though you, again, have killed all of your opponents, or giving the opponent a back door into your territory via one-way portals, that sort of thing.

I love turn based strategy games. I know they aren't really all that popular anymore. People seem to think there is no more innovation left for this genre, but I disagree. I really think there's a lot can be done with this format that hasn't really been done or at least done well.

+1. The drop in titles really cuts down on my game buying though. I do want to check out both Fantasy Wars and Armageddon Empires when I get the time............. |

It seems like we're really stuck with either hardcore wargames for turn-based or real-time strategy.
So +3 from me. |
+4 for me.
