Do you clap at the end of movies ?
 

This topic started to thread jack the Cloverfield thread so I decided to start a poll about it.

I personaly think it is stupid but not uncommon.

only after movies that rhyme with star boars

Only at plays and musicals.

I put no, because the topic is movies, but to comment on joe's post, I do clap at the end of performances that have live actors or live performers such as he said plays, musicals, etc. Anything that has no performer there to receive my appreciation, I see no reason to provide it to a blank screen :)

No, and I find that annoying when people do that.

I also dread that conversation from the theater outside. I think that's the dumbest moment in anyone's life. No one has anything interesting to say, and usually it's cringe-worthy. I've subconsciously trained my friends to stay silent until we get in the car at least. I'm a disturbed individual.

I don't know. The conversation I had walking to the car after watching Mission to Mars was one of the best I've ever had in my life. It involved tears of laughter and running into multiple posts.

Unless the projectionist did a really fine job. :D

Clapping at the end of a movie seems as odd to me as clapping in sports bars during sporting events. I never feel the need to announce to everyone in the room how much I may enjoy something. Basically I figured none of us cares.

I would distinguish Sports Bars from movies - I like to hear cheering in the former, but I'm too tired and drunk to articulate why.

I agree 100%. Like who are they clapping for, the person who ran the "reel," to congratulate them for not screwing up? I don't live anywhere important enough for anybody who actually matters with reagards to a production to actually be there. It's a bit of pet peeve of mine when people do, I think it's a sign our society is getting stupider.

Just like the morons who were mad at the end of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings, for leaving us hanging. Um, hello? Sometimes I wish stupid people would spontaneously combust.

The worst thing about this clapping at the end of the movie (in a movie theater) is that it seems to be a new phenomenon, like in the last 5 years or so, and I'll be damned if I can figure out why it started.

Maybe it's just society's way of rewarding mediocrity, brought to a new level.

I guess that is a good point.. Realistically there shouldn't be that much difference between a sporting event and a movie, they are both forms of entertainment, but I definitly will cheer in a sports bar, I also even go as far as cheering when I'm watching one of my teams by myself in my living room. I just get into it and get excited..

Maybe that is just as pointless as cheering at a blank movie screen when you really think about it. I guess I just haven't had a movie in 30+ years that got me excited enough to clap then.

I think when you clap at a sports bar you are celebrating something that just happened, many times with other fans. Clapping at a performance is more to show appreciation for the performers.

I think I agree with this. With sports, usually there's some tension, and it's more like a release of the tension, a "whoop" as it were. Clapping at the end of a movie seen in the movie theater feels like it's something different. Unless you were very stressed/tense about getting to the end of the movie...

Also alot of times you clap at a sports bar to annoy the fans of the other team.

I do anyway.

I watch most of my sports at home, but watched the Packer game at a sports bar last weekend. People were cheering and clapping as the team ran out onto the field. I don't get it personally, but the whole bar was doing it.

I never clap at the end of movies.

I think that reacting to a football game that I'm watching on TV is in the same category as laughing or crying while watching a movie. It's that level of involvment in what's going on. I sympathize for my team and want them to win, so I'll clap or cheer when they help themselves and curse or whatever when they mess up.

I wonder if anybody will put in "yes" to the poll and then feel like they'll incur my wrath because it drives me so freaking bonkers.

I clap throughout a whole movie, even if nothing is really happening on screen. It's a good way to meet people.

Especially the ushers who escort you out for being a nuisance? ;)

The clapping AND the rewarding of mediocrity have been around far longer than you or even I have been alive. Its never really been that widespread but its always happened. Humanity is a stupid crowd.

100% serious question....where i live we dont clap for strippers...lathum and I were at a strip club in Wisconsin and the bartender/bouncer and another stripper who wasnt on stage yelled at us for not clapping when another girl finished her set. i thought it was the weirdest thing i had ever seen.

I actually haven't ever gone to a strip club, so can't tell you what I would do in that case :)

Totally unrelated to this thread, back in the mid-90s when I worked in Dallas, a friend I worked with used to go to this strip club every wednesday for lunch. He swore up and down that they had the best lunch buffet in town and I should give it a try.. I never figured out what type of buffet he meant! :)

I selected "No", which is correct in most cases. However I have clapped in a movie in which a director and/or actors are present when that have Q & A's afterwards. And that is if I enjoyed the movie and wanted to show them the appreciation for it. Otherwise it is a No.

Yeah, I saw a documentary/film about the battle of Gallipoli in which the director was present, and that's the only time I've ever clapped.

I was pretty happy when each of the prequels finally finished, but I never actually applauded them.

I remember an entire theatre walking out silently after Schindler's List.

I clap at the end of my own movies, particularly because they all end with a shot of me kicking an old man in the nuts.

I have felt convicted to clap sometimes after a great experience in the theatre, but don't have the balls to be a solo clapper

I went to see The Tuxedo (starring Jackie Chan and Jennifer Love Hewitt), and I was sitting two rows behind a woman with presumably twin daughters. I clapped about 30 minutes into the movie when one of the girls shit herself.

Edit: I guess in the interest of the poll, I should answer what it's asking. No, I didn't clap at the end of that movie. That would be stupid.

If I am at a premiere with someone who worked on the movie, and I like it, I clap. Happened a few times at art houses here in Ann Arbor.

Schindler's list is probably still the greatest movie that I never want to watch again.

I thought Pan's Labyrinth was one of the best movies I've ever seen, but I don't know that I could watch it again.

I feel the same way about The Passion of the Christ. Never saw Schindler's List.

LOL. Either way, a 16 year old or an 8 year old should indeed NOT be shitting themselves. At least that is my opinion.
