DAM, Well it should be Free then if the company is not selling it;)

gstelmack 01-28-2008 07:04 AM

No, you should be buying 2007 to support the author, for whom this is his living. Why should you get to play his hard work for free?

cuervo72 01-28-2008 08:34 AM

The Man shouldn't have to pay. The Man just asks and receives.

TLK 01-28-2008 08:37 AM

Do you have a copy of Net Detective?

Passacaglia 01-28-2008 09:01 AM

We should start bugging whoever it is to make Net Detective 2. Maybe Jim is waiting for that to come out, before he makes TCY 2?

zbuckley 01-28-2008 09:30 AM

what is net detective?

gottimd 01-28-2008 10:38 AM

Is it Haircut day yet?

he wasn't asking for a cracked copy or someone to give him a product code. OOTP5 can be downloaded for free, so its not like this guy is asking for something out of the ordinary.

yes, but there is an actual difference between OOTP5 and the current version.

He said it should be free because the company is not selling it. I disagree strongly with that line of reasoning.

Actually he said "It should be free ;) "

You said "you should support the author", a line of reasoning I vehemently disagree with.

a game that is roughly 5 years old and no longer supported could be argued that it should be free.

in any event, you're trying to insinuate he's wrong for asking the question as if this was some sort of zany idea. not like it isn't done for other companies. ok, not on a grand scale, but it happens. what's the worst that'll come of it - people get psyched about the game, become fans of the series and develop into paying customers?

If its free its probably because the UI looks like it was done at a community college.

I most Probably will Buy 2007 but I am just saying because it's about 4 Years old and he is not selling it he might as have it for free plus as someone else said it here that people would love 2004 Version then buy the 2007 Version:)

Subby 01-28-2008 07:10 PM

Dude - don't be so chintzy with those capital letters! THEY DON'T COST NOTHIN'!!!!!

OldSchool 01-29-2008 04:42 PM

I'm pretty sure EA owns the rights to 2004, so its not Jim's call. I doubt the EA guys read this board, they had a pretty traumatic time here.

Wrong version. 2004 was the first done out from under the EA umbrella.

EA owns the rights to FOF2001 and its bastard child, FOF2002. FOF4 and FOF2004 were published solely by Solecismic Software.

you would wind up buying 2007 anyway, even if you could get 2004 for free. you would like the game, then hear all about all these MP league which have since migrated to 2007 (i don't think anyone plays 2004 anymore and i couldn't imagine any league still uses that version). so in order to get in a MP league - which is where all the fun is at - you would eventually get 2007. so this is why it could be argued that it wouldn't be such a bad idea to give the game away for free. theoretically you could play 2004 by yourself forever, but the minute you wanted to play with other humans you'd have to fork over your money. so the only thing giving 2004 away for free would do is entice sales for future versions. not like Solecismic is making money off 2004 anymore anyway.

I agree 100% single version 2004 but if you want to play with other people then you need to buy the 2007 Version and as you said there not making money from it

Anthony 01-29-2008 07:52 PM

well, don't confuse that with me saying you should get 2004. i think 2007 is worth the purchase (in and of itself, mind you, meaning if you don't have any previous versions then 2007 is where it's at, but the minimal evolution from 2004 to 2007 may or may not be worth the jump depending on who you ask) and you get to join in the discussion on the game and participate in MP leagues. my point was it isn't such a zany idea to give away the old version for free.

that's like me saying, yeah, it'd be nice for you to get a free VHS player from Panasonic, but eventually you'd want to see the movies on DVD cuz no one uses the old kind anymore.

so i recommend simply buying the DVD player.

Ah, I retract the UI comment then, I was thinking 2k4 was the one EA butchered.
