What are your plans for the next Great Depression?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/mai.../ccview103.xml

Should start seeing this in the next 6 mos., if not already. Anybody doing any planning? Buying Gold? Hoping for a new FDR? Yes, the sky really is falling this time, Virginia.

cthomer5000 03-03-2008 07:44 AM

I've kind of always wanted to cook a can of beans directly over a open flame... preferably while under a bridge. So that is on my to-do list.

Flasch186 03-03-2008 07:56 AM

I should tell the guy who just bought a home from me last week.

oh, and I plan on rolling out some barbwire to claim land.

gottimd 03-03-2008 07:57 AM

I've always wanted someone to cook me a can of beans over an open flame....hopefully under a bridge.

Butter 03-03-2008 08:07 AM

I've always wanted to murder two guys cooking a can of beans over an open flame... hopefully under a bridge.

You know, for cover.

Fear the hearts of men are failing
These our latter days we know
The great depression now is spreading
God's word declared it would be so

I'm going where there's no depression
To a better land that's free from care
I'll leave this world of toil and trouble
My home's in heaven
I'm going there

In this dark hour, midnight nearing
The tribulation time will come
The storms will hurl the midnight fear
And sweep lost millions to their doom

I'm going where there's no depression
To a better land that's free from care
I'll leave this world of toil and trouble
My home's in heaven
I'm going there

I'm going where there's no depression
To a better land that's free from care
I'll leave this world of toil and trouble
My home's in heaven
I'm going there

Passacaglia 03-03-2008 08:17 AM

I've been listening to a lot of jazz and swing music.

Critch 03-03-2008 08:19 AM

I'm prepared to break my vegetarianism by killing and eating a hobo.

Bubba Wheels 03-03-2008 08:21 AM

I myself am actually hoping for the return of raggedy suits and crumpled fedoras, the height of fashion past.

Fidatelo 03-03-2008 08:21 AM

I saw some guys huffing Ragu under a bridge one morning on my way to work. I think I might try that.

EventHorizon 03-03-2008 08:24 AM

Whenever I reaad about the next depression or recession or what not, I'm reminded of a quote from Milton Friedman:

"The Great Depression, like most other periods of severe unemployment, was produced by government mismanagement rather than by any inherent instability of the private economy."

I'm eating my beans under a different bridge.

They were on the sauce?

Icy 03-03-2008 09:08 AM

During depression is when the major fortunes are made, will be a good time to take risky investments.

Indeed :D

CraigSca 03-03-2008 09:26 AM

First thing I'm going to do is run to my bank and get all my money out of there! Who's with me?!

Pumpy Tudors 03-03-2008 09:28 AM

I'll be blue, and I won't know where to go to, so I'll probably go where fashion sits.

Dr. Sak 03-03-2008 09:31 AM

Puttin on the Ritz

lungs 03-03-2008 09:31 AM

I'll be in a good position when the depression hits. I've got 700 cows so I'll have plenty to eat. I've got an arsenal of weapons that I'll equip my personal army of illegal immigrants with.

I'll be fine. Plenty to eat, and a well equipped personal army to fight off anybody that tries to steal from me.

Tigercat 03-03-2008 09:36 AM

If I don't find a good leaping window beforehand I am thinking of going into greyhound racing. There maybe I can find a dog who is down on his luck, like all of us, who can be an inspiration. I'm also considering boxing.

Bubba Wheels 03-03-2008 09:39 AM

Well, the good news is, the military will still be hiring.

cartman 03-03-2008 09:39 AM

I'll open up a brass knuckle and broomstick factory to supply all of the new Pinkerton goons hired to break up labor disputes.

Passacaglia 03-03-2008 09:46 AM

To take this thread back to serious-land, I'm curious what Bubba is doing.

Oh, c'mon, labor's been broken for 20+ years now. You're getting into a bad market ;)

SI

Mizzou B-ball fan 03-03-2008 09:55 AM

This news story feels like a winter weather forcast in the Midwest........

Today: We're expecting over a foot of snow tomorrow! Buy canned goods and bottled water!

Later the next day: Well, we only got one inch of snow, but it could have been much worse if the storm track would have been 100 miles north.

KWhit 03-03-2008 09:57 AM

If there's a depression, then maybe I can finally find a Wii in stock!

Lathum 03-03-2008 10:04 AM

this isn't even from a US paper

You know they'll shoot you and take your cows, right? This is a depression, man!

JPhillips 03-03-2008 10:23 AM

My big friend and I plan on doing some farm labor in California, but only until we get enough of a stake to have little farm of our own.

Well no shit. Our papers are controlled by the government.

Dr. Sak 03-03-2008 10:48 AM

I am going to team up with a certain fellow who plans on placing an explosive on a fault line in California to which we bought land on the east side of that fault line. Bye-bye, California. Hello, new west coast. My west coast...Costa Del Lex. Luthorville. Marina del Lex. Otisburg...

Paranoid much?

sachmo71 03-03-2008 10:57 AM

I'm bringing back the flappers!

Mustang 03-03-2008 11:00 AM

At least Flasch can do some reworking on his marketing plan.

Not only are you buying food from him, the sack can also transformed into clothing.

Galaxy 03-03-2008 11:09 AM

Bernake has got to go. He is a full-blown idiot. Of course, Greenspan is an idiot to for keeping low rates around for so long.

twothree 03-03-2008 11:10 AM

"What are your plans for the next Great Depression?"

The same thing we do every Great Depression, Pinky. Try to take over the world.

Bubba Wheels 03-03-2008 11:42 AM

Live and learn. There was one game-changer in this whole election, Ron Paul. Really, write in Mickey Mouse on your ballot in November and look out for yourself and your family. http://www.richdad.com/RichDad/RichContent.aspx?cpid=62 click the last one, Mike Maloney on gold and silver.

JediKooter 03-03-2008 11:46 AM

Thankfully all of my stocks were not purchased on margin, so I wont have to worry about that. Then, I think there's plenty of rivers here in the good 'ol U S of A that could use dams, so, I'm not worried about finding a job. I could always start bootlegging whiskey from Canada, but, that can be a little risky with all the other rival gangs trying to do the same thing. We could build sky scrapers, highways, sewer systems, too many to name. The Depression is looking good in preseason.

Desnudo 03-03-2008 12:13 PM

I already have a prime corner staked-out for apple sales

I bet you had a big stockpile of fuel and canned goods on December 31st, 1999, didn't you?

Does Steve Jobs know?

Cringer 03-03-2008 12:22 PM

I am pretty sure I can overpower any and all of my neighbors, some are already scared of me as it is I think. I think I will take control of my neighborhood. I can put people to work on turning the golf course into a farm. I don't golf so I won't need it.

My brother did. He also dropped $1K on a generator and bought a shotgun. The family was told that when everything collapsed that any family members trying to get ahold of his stockpile would be shot on sight.

Wish I was making that up, but ah... no.

Increase the number of 5 year olds that someone can take during a Great Depression by a factor of 3. Call it the - 'Desperation Factor'

That's nice. I bet you teared up at the family unity-ness of it all.

Considering my brother never talked to anyone given that he at least told us that was something.

I was down in his basement several years after that. Dude still had like 100 cans of beans on a shelf.

No bridge though
