Green Day lyric question
So in the song Longview you have the line
"When masturbation's lost it's fun You're fucking breaking" but now i'm hearing the line is sung as you're fucking LAZY. or you're fucking DONE. what is the story here? are there more than one version of this? |
I always heard it as lazy when it was in non-stop rotation a few years ago.
|
the printed lyrics say "breaking" but I keep hearing people say it's not
|
Maybe they printed the lyrics, and then thought of a better word. Little known fact: Police's "Roxanne" was first called "Diane" but Sting met a bitchy Diane and changed the words.
|
You real issue here is why they put an apostrophe in 'its.'

HAR HAR GRAMMER POLICE F' UP!!!! |
he definitely says "lost the key".
|
dola
wait, wrong verse. |
k it's official:
it's something with an "L", but it's not Lazy. Sounds more like "Lah lah" or maybe "Laverne". |
as the board's unofficial #1 Green Day fan, I've always gone with "lazy". I think it's just him trailing off and singing with his accent that makes it not sound like lazy
but the song is far from my favorite - i prefer earlier stuff off of 39 Smooth and Kerplunk |
He got the short end of the (his) stick. Shirley's where it's at.
|
LAZY, it is lazy. I can remember this from 12 years ago for some reason.......

Those of us who listened to them BEFORE they were on MTV are the coolest kids in town. |

Green Day fans LOVE pointing this out. |

Plus fans of a million other bands as well. Gotta get that e-cred. |
are we sure it's lazy? most of the lyric listings say "breaking".

I stopped saying it in a serious way a loooooooong time ago. Though trust me, there was a time I said it because it drove me nuts the number of people around me who never heard of Green Day before all of the sudden were their #1 fan once they had a video. The high school days....sigh. It happened with Pearl Jam in Jr. High for me as well. In elementary school it was Vanilla Ice. Quote:
I have no doubt in my mind. Even if Green Day told me it wasn't I would say screw you it is. |
Wait...people used to argue over who liked Vanilla Ice earlier? Was it like, "I heard of him this morning," and others were like, "Well, I knew about him since yesterday's lunch period?" Or was it, "I knew him back when he was Robert Van Winkle?" And then, "Well, I've been a huge fan since...oh well, that ended quickly."
|
Well, it was elementary school, so I had a good week or so jump on the other kids I am sure. And then everyone knew him one day...... :)
|
why would you be lazy if masturbation lost its fun?
|
yeah, that makes no sense

breaking makes sense reading the lyrics
I watched the video on youtube and that part you can't see his lips and the music gets real loud. Inconclusive it was. |
Quote:
Why does/did that bother you? Obviously that's why they went to MTV, to increase the amount of people who know them. And I've always thought it was "breaking". That just sounds like more of a Green Day Lyric than "lazy" there. |
Quote:
Oh it doesn't bother me at all now. Back then, sure. They are supposed to be part of the punk scene, how could they go mainstream, you don't see Fifteen doing this crap, blah blah blah blah. Typical little shithead suburban teenage punk talk that a few years later didn't matter when real life came. |
Back in the day this used to be my favorite Green Day song and was on SERIOUS rotation for me for awhile.
It was always "Lazy" to me by listening to the words, never looked at the lyrics. |
maybe it's "lame"?

I think the debate is what is actually sung. Not what is written as the lyrics.

hxxp://www.lyricsmania.com/lyrics/green_day_lyrics_1963/international_superhits_lyrics_8862/longview_lyrics_102321.html No . Maybe I will listen to the song sometime today though. Maybe I am just confusing it with the earlier lazy part in my head. |
i always thought it was breaking. i understood it to mean that if you can't have sex, you resort to masturbating. if that finally loses fun, you're outta luck.

you are wise |
i think one way to know for sure is to try to watch a clip of a live performance of this song and see what he sings live. that's the best way. i'll hop on youtube tonite if this mystery hasn't been uncovered by then.
|
Ok, after listening closely I am 100% sure it is 'brazy' or 'blarwarrrryyy.'
|
breaking makes the most sense, and I'm pretty sure it's in the liner notes, but I'm also pretty sure it's not what he's saying when he sings it on the album version. Maybe he was too drunk or high or something to properly spit it out? Who knows with these crazy musicians nowadays.
|
one rule of thumb for lyrics that you hear is if it doesn't make sense, you're likely not hearing the correct words.
case in point, i thought Brett Michaels was singing "what's been going on, Aunt Headio?" in the song Unskinny Bop. this is probably the worse case of not hearing the correct lyrics of all time. Headio isn't even a name. what was i thinking. i mean, this is clearly lunacy of a high calibre. it was only when i bought the tape and read the words did i find out how wrong i was. |
Quote:
Oh I thought this would help too, but the live version on YouTube Billy Joe lets the crowd sing that part. Bastard is screwing with us me thinks. |
Quote:
because you are obviously not trying hard enough. listen, i can give 60% and masturbation is still a wild load of fun. |
Quote:
That's not the problem with the line. The problem is why would it necessarily follow that you are lazy if masturbation is no fun. That's one possibility - you don't find masturbation fun anymore because it requires you to "work for it." But you could also be depressed, impotent, or maybe lacking decent materials to work with. Who knows. The point is that "lazy" isn't necessarily the only reason. So I hope that "lazy" isn't the line. But why do I care, I hate this band anyway. |
When I used to listen to Green Day, I always figured it was "lazy" without looking at the lyrics.
