Gay Bar!

So, last night, I got invited to a gay bar. I've never been to a gay bar, but I've never been one of those "Fuckin' fags" types. Our group didn't wind up going there, but when it seemed likely that this gay bar was going to be our hangout, a lot of thoughts swirled into my head:

-What if an acquaintance, or someone that I don't know all that well, recognizes me coming out of the place? Talk about fodder for the rumor mill.

-I've never been seriously hit on by a gay guy. I don't think so, anyway. What if I had one of those "cornered badger" reactions and freaked out?

-What the hell are groups without even one gay person even going to a gay bar for? Is it to watch the "freakshow"? It seems a bit too much like going to a zoo. It's degrading for both you and them.

-On the other hand, I've thought about how many free drinks you could probably score at a gay bar. I could tie my shirt into a knot or something!

So, gay bar. Have you ever, would you ever?

sounds like you aren't ready yet

Went to one for my friend's dorm roomate's birthday (he was a Q). Needless to say 3 years later and I haven't thought about going back - it makes for a very uncomfortable night.

But when I went there were some straight chicks there, reason being they could dance their happy asses off all night without the threat of being groped, grinded, or straight out fucked on the dance floor.

Not been to a gay bar, but having known and drank heavily with several flaaaaaaaming friends of mine back in college, I don't see the big deal. Might even be entertaining since the competition for the women that show up wouldn't exactly be high.

He made gadgets for James Bond?

I think I've mentioned it on this board in the past, but I've only been a bar once in my life. It was a gay bar. It was in the French Quarter. It was on Halloween night. I was with my mother.

The "highlight" of the evening was when a guy wearing only a fluorescent green g-string stood on the bar and thrust his crotch toward me repeatedly. I wasn't paying very much attention, as I was wearing a cowboy hat pulled low over my forehead, and I was singing Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night."

I'm not making any of this shit up.

path12 05-01-2008 01:46 PM

I've been plenty of times (have quite a few gay friends). If I get hit on I just smile and say I play for the other team. They might flirt a little after that just to see if you get uncomfortable, but it's never been a problem.

Explains a lot.

I was at a gay bar one time in my life. Two years ago, the day of the Penn State/Michigan game, in October of 2006. I was with two other people, one guy and one girl, and we wanted to find a place to do jagerbombs. Each bar had about a 30 minute line to get in except for Chumley's, the gay bar in State College.

They allowed us to bring our cooler of beer in...we did our shots and went on our way. Given the same situation, I'd do it all over again.

I was at a gay bar one night when there was a drag queen convention in town (no shit). Reminded me a lot of Halloween. Trai LaTrash was quite infatuated with me, which amused Ms.Path greatly, to the point where she denied being Ms.Path.

thesloppy 05-01-2008 01:56 PM

Me and my buddy ended up dancing the tango with a couple leathermen at the local gay bar, thanks to a wily prank pulled by my nemesis at the academy. Fucking Mahoney.

miked 05-01-2008 01:57 PM

When I was a grad student in the A, some friends were in town and we were drinking in Midtown until around 4am when the bars closed. There was only one or two bars open past that, they were gay bars. We had some fun, there were chicks there. I'm trying to remember the name, it was on Peachtree, but it's been closed for a while due to drugs and other shit going on there.

The only weird thing was the bathroom. Let's just say, there weren't a lot of shy people.

Would likely have been either The Armory or Bulldogs. The two clubs had different themes/clientele but were located virtually next to each other IIRC, one basically outside the back door of the other (pun intended).

lordscarlet 05-01-2008 02:07 PM

I have been several times, for various reasons. One bar had a decent pool table that nobody used. :)

I also think that men who are gay have a better gay-dar than men who are straight. Therefore it is fairly unlikely for a straight man to be seriously hit on, even at a gay bar.

Passacaglia 05-01-2008 02:08 PM

I've never been to a gay bar, but I've been to Market Days in the "Boys Town" area of Chicago, with my mom and some of her gay friends. When my mom and I got there and found one of her friends, he hugged her, picking her up and kind of grabbing her ass as he did it. He looked really embarrassed when right after that she introduced him to her son.

JonInMiddleGA 05-01-2008 02:11 PM

Unlikely though it may be, I've actually been to three. Usually some of the cheapest booze in town & there are definitely times in life when that's important.

Had a pretty good time seeing impressionist Jimmy James at one (fun, at least until the other straight member of our group had major freakout over where he was & bailed without telling anyone he was catching a cab).

Visited a much rougher one with a gay co-worker, largely because it was so over the top that he found it pretty amusing & thought I'd get a kick out of going. Think Village-People-with-attitudes & you'd be pretty close to the scene.

Third & final one was the regular hangout of a longtime former co-worker who wanted to buy dinner when I went to his new town for a meeting. After the first two mentioned above, he knew this one wouldn't be traumatic for me, and it was actually pretty decent food.

Of course, that does leave open the issues that can arise when the "hitter" knows he's just kidding but the "hittee" thinks he's serious.

Personally, I've had my ass grabbed so rarely that I appreciate the gesture when in a gay bar.

But yeah, if you're there and you're going to get bothered if hit on then you should probably notice the rainbow decals around the door and stay away.......

Gay bars are great! I've had great times at Amsterdam here in the Phx. Wednesdays are the all male review nights... Good times, what I remember anyway. :)

CamEdwards 05-01-2008 03:13 PM

I went to a gay bar on my wedding night believe it or not. Our "maid of honor" was a gay friend, and since all of us wanted to go out dancing we decided to go to a gay bar. It wasn't traumatic for me, though I did run into a co-worker who wasn't quite out of the closet yet. That might have been traumatic for him. :)

Cringer 05-01-2008 03:13 PM

I have been a couple times and have no problem with it. My wife's cousin is gay and the last few times he came down from San Antonio (and I was home) we went out to two different gay bars/clubs. The last time was just a few weeks ago.

The first time we went my wife was getting hit on by a pretty nice looking tall blonde chick. I tried to push the wife into it, but she will never take that jump I am guessing. I have never been hit on, although this last time there was this pretty big guy (tall for down here where it's mostly hispanics, and pretty heavy as well) seemed to be eyeing me for about 10-15 minutes. Then I think he noticed my wife and he went out and tore up the dance floor.

The good thing about going with my wife and her cousin is that he gave me a good tip. He said if anyone grabs my ass to just grab his (the cousin's) hand to get them to back off me. :D

hahaha. Sadly I have not grown it out like I planned and was doing back at the begining of the year. I ended up shaving it and keeping just the regular ole goatee. I have kept it that way for the last few months. I haven't shaved in a week though, so if I keep this insomnia thing going and skipping the small things like shaving maybe I will grow it out.

I went to a pizza place in Boys Town with my brother and our other buddy.. We had no idea about Boys Town, but the menu was incredibly "different". The funniest part about the place was the store "Batteries Not Included"..

Lathum 05-01-2008 03:34 PM

Saldana and I ended up at one years ago with a gay friend of ours and the girl I was dating. We were reluctant but then we found out it was dollar beer night and we eased up.

We actualy ran into a girl we know who was very confused until we explained the situation, Saldana actualy ended up hooking up with her so I guess it was a good night.

BishopMVP 05-01-2008 03:42 PM

I've been to a gay bar once. Another straight guy, me, a couple girls and their gay friend for his birthday. It was good enough, kind of amusing because one other guy at the club kept trying to convince me and my straight friend to switch sides after he knew we were straight. The bathroom was a little dicey though, I'll say that.

If I get hit on by a gay guy, I just find it flattering and laugh it off - it's no different than having an ugly girl all over me in my eyes. The only annoying thing is if I'm trying to run game on any of a dozen girls at a bar/party and the only one interested is the one gay guy.

Arrrrgh. I knew there was another one that I was blanking on the name of.
And now you've got me trying to recall whether Armory/Bulldogs was actually the same place (different names at diff times) & that Backstreet was really the other bar in the two bar combo.

It doesn't matter one bit, especially since all of them are gone now I believe, but this will bug me intermittently for days

I was invited to a gay bar by some gay friends of mine here. I'm not worried about things like that so I went. The drinks were strong, the people friendly and there were even some girls around to talk to that were straight.

I didn't have anyone hassle me, I didn't get a recruitment speech, nothing. I had a blast. I'd go again.

I went inside a gay bar once with my girlfriend because she had to use the bathroom. I was standing in the corridor near the toilets waiting for her, just staring at my feet, when two other shoes appeared in my vision. I looked up, and there was a big African dude about 6'6 or taller looking right at me with the biggest, whitest smile I've ever seen. I froze with fear - thankfully my girlfriend came along and whisked me off.

I've been hit on by guys before though just out and about at normal bars. It usually takes me a long time to realise, but as soon as I do I feel very uncomfortable and just want to get the heck outta there. Makes you sympathise with how girls feel when some guy is sleazing all over them.
