Media Streaming devices...any experience?
I'm interested in perhaps purchasing a media streaming device for my house. Does anyone have an experience with them?

I use a DLink media streaming device. I think it is the DSM-520. It isn't perfect, but I use it quite a bit and really enjoy it. The biggest complaint I have with it is that it can't handle a DVD format, just AVI/WMV/MPEG files. The addition of DVD streaming would make it just about perfect.
If you are looking for these devices, plan on having a wired network connection. Wireless connections don't really provide the bandwidth for good quality video. Don't believe the marketing of wireless HD video streaming. |

I looked at the Dlink one. Maybe I should wait if the wireless isn't that strong. Space is at a premium, and I don't want to run a cable across the room. |

It is more a function of wireless technology than the particular unit. 802.11g can't provide enough bandwidth for HD content...or decent quality SD. 802.11n might be better, but wireless is very subject to interference. |
I suggest a Xbox 360. It's the best. I really suggest running a cable, you could always have someone carpet or wall fish it.
You don't need Vista (but it's nice to have), you could use TVesity ( http://www.tversity.com/home ), it will stream just about everything. |
