Looking for good pet memorial donation

My good friend's dog died yesterday. I'd like to make a donation to an animal/pet based charity in memory of the dog. Any suggestions for a good/legitimate charity.

I googled and found some places, but I am not sure how legitimate some of them are. And, doing some research, some of the other organizations have a larger pro-animal scope (i.e. against factory farming) than I really want. I am not trying to make a political statement. I am trying to make a personal statement.

Any thoughts? Anyone with whom you have had experience that you would recommend?

dola--

I am not, of course, advocating factory farming nor am I saying that some of these larger issues are not important. Just saying that that is not what I hope to accomplish here.

Here's a link to make a Memorial Gift to the ASPCA (American Society For The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals)

If you have a local humane society, that would be good as well. When our dog died a year and a half ago, my dad and a few others donated to the Best Friends Society (http://www.bestfriends.org/) I think they run some big sanctuaries.

ASPCA, Humane Society, or local shelter (local shelters almost always need money) will probably fit the bill the best.

I would suggest a local humane society as well. Or perhaps a local rescue organization for the breed of dog he had.

Yep, I'd go with a local shelter.

Local shelters and the humane society are the best things in my opinion to donate to. They probably need it the most in some cases.

Adding my endorsement of donating to a good shelter in the area (a no-kill or last resort kill if possible).

Depending upon how much effort/research you want to put into it, you might also consider a donation to a group specific to the dog's breed or something like that. General donations to local shelters are pretty much always welcome but some have special purpose funds/types of donations too; i.e. sponsoring a specific animal until it's adopted (usually just a one time donation though) or a food fund or capital drive or something like that.
